If you are asking why your credit is frozen, the answer is almost always one of three things: you placed a security freeze yourself and forgot, someone froze it in response to identity theft, or a parent froze it when you were a child. A freeze blocks new lenders from pulling your credit report, so any new application — a card, a car loan, a mortgage, an apartment — stalls until you contact each of the three credit bureaus and lift it.
Lifting a freeze is free, and by federal law the bureau has to act within one hour if you ask online or by phone.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts
You Placed the Freeze Yourself and Forgot
This is the most common cause. Federal law lets any consumer freeze their credit file for free, and bureaus cannot charge you to place or remove it.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts People often freeze after a data breach hits the news or after losing a wallet, then move on with life.
A freeze stays in place indefinitely until you ask for it to come off.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts There is no expiration, no yearly renewal, no reminder email. That is the whole point of the tool, but it also means the freeze can quietly outlast the reason you placed it and only surface years later when a lender cannot pull your report.
Identity Theft Triggered a Freeze
If your Social Security number was compromised, you or someone helping you may have frozen your credit to stop new fraudulent accounts. Identity theft victims can file at IdentityTheft.gov, the federal recovery portal, which generates an FTC Identity Theft Report and a step-by-step recovery plan.2Federal Trade Commission. IdentityTheft.gov: Report Identity Theft and Get a Recovery Plan That report often sits behind the extended protections placed on your file.
Bureaus can also flag or restrict a file on their own when they see suspicious patterns, such as a sudden run of credit applications tied to your Social Security number. Once those safeguards are on, you will need to verify who you are before new lenders can see your report again.
A Parent or Guardian Froze Your Credit as a Minor
Parents, legal guardians, and child welfare representatives can place a freeze on the file of anyone under 16 to head off child identity theft.3Federal Trade Commission. New Protections Available for Minors Under 16 Criminals target children’s Social Security numbers because no one is checking the file — the child is not applying for credit, so the fraud can run for years. If the bureau has no file on the child, it will create one just to freeze it.
This freeze usually shows up when the now-young-adult tries to open their first credit card, take out a student loan, or sign an apartment lease. Many are surprised to learn a credit file exists in their name at all. Once you turn 18, you can manage the freeze yourself. To lift a freeze that a parent placed while you were still a minor, a parent needs proof of authority such as a birth certificate; a child welfare representative needs official documentation from the agency.3Federal Trade Commission. What a Freeze Actually Blocks
A freeze stops new creditors from accessing your credit report, which is what prevents new accounts from being opened in your name.4USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report That includes applications you file yourself. You cannot open new credit while the freeze is active unless you lift it first.
Some access is not blocked. The federal freeze law does not cover requests for employment screening, tenant screening, or insurance underwriting.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A freeze also does not protect the accounts you already have open — stolen cards, skimmed numbers, and account takeovers still happen, so watch your statements and turn on transaction alerts.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How to Lift the Freeze
You have to contact each of the three major credit bureaus separately. Lifting the freeze at one bureau does not carry over to the other two.4USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report If you do not know which bureau your lender uses, lift all three.
Federal law sets the deadlines:
- Online or phone: the bureau must lift the freeze within one hour of your request.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts
- Mail: within three business days of receiving your request.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts
For a closing or a car purchase, use the online portal or phone line. Save mail for situations where you cannot verify your identity any other way.
Temporary Thaw or Permanent Removal
You do not have to remove the freeze entirely. Federal law lets you request a temporary lift for a specific window you choose, and when the window closes the freeze goes back on automatically.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts If you want continuing protection, that is the option to use. The same one-hour and three-business-day timelines apply either way.
