Why Is Cash App Asking for Your Social Security Number?

Cash App is asking for your Social Security number because federal law requires it to confirm your identity before letting you send larger amounts, order a Cash App Card, or use its investing features. The request is legitimate when it appears inside the app, and it comes from the same anti-money-laundering and tax reporting rules that apply to every licensed payment platform in the United States.

That said, scammers imitate this exact request outside the app, so it’s worth knowing what triggered the prompt, what Cash App actually needs, and how to tell a real ask from a fake one.

What You Did That Triggered the Prompt

A new Cash App account works without any Social Security number at all, up to a point. Unverified accounts are capped at $1,000 in combined sending and receiving over any rolling 30-day period, with a lifetime ceiling of $1,500. The verification screen appears the moment you try to do something the basic account can’t cover.1Cash App. Cash App Account Limits

According to Cash App’s help documentation, verification is required before you can:2Cash App. Why Do I Need to Verify My Identity (ID Verification)?

  • Send or receive more than $1,000 over a rolling 30-day period
  • Exceed $1,500 in total activity over the account’s lifetime
  • Order a Cash App Card, the physical Visa debit card linked to your balance
  • Buy Bitcoin or stocks through Cash App
  • Sponsor a teen account for someone ages 13 to 17
  • Connect an external account to your Cash App

Once you’re verified, the sending limit jumps to $40,000 per rolling 30 days, and receiving limits are set individually for each account.1Cash App. Cash App Account Limits

The Federal Rules Behind the Request

Cash App is classified as a money services business under federal regulations, which means it has to run a formal anti-money-laundering program that includes verifying customer identity. The Bank Secrecy Act and its implementing rules at 31 CFR Part 1022 require these businesses to develop policies and internal controls for confirming who their customers are before processing transactions.3eCFR. 31 CFR Part 1022 – Rules for Money Services Businesses

This identity check is commonly called Know Your Customer. When Cash App collects your name, date of birth, and SSN, it’s matching that information against government records to confirm you’re a real, identifiable person. The point is to make anonymous transfers harder for anyone involved in fraud or money laundering.

Tax reporting is the other half. Federal law requires payment platforms to file IRS Form 1099-K for users who receive more than $20,000 in gross payments for goods and services across more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. Without a valid taxpayer identification number on file, Cash App can’t correctly attribute that activity to the right person.4Internal Revenue Service. Personal Transfers Won’t Create a Tax Bill

A common worry: does giving Cash App your SSN mean the IRS will tax you for splitting dinner or getting repaid for concert tickets? No. The IRS is clear that money received from friends or family as a gift or reimbursement for a personal expense is not taxable income and should not appear on a 1099-K. Sharing a ride, receiving a birthday gift, and getting paid back for rent are on the IRS’s own list of examples.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K

The 1099-K obligation only applies to payments received for goods or services. If you sell handmade jewelry through Cash App or collect freelance client payments, those count. Paying a friend back for pizza does not.

What You’ll Be Asked to Submit

Verification starts in Cash App’s profile settings. At a minimum, you’ll be asked for your legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN. Depending on your account activity, Cash App may also request:2Cash App. Why Do I Need to Verify My Identity (ID Verification)?

  • All nine digits of your SSN or ITIN
  • A residential street address (not a P.O. box)
  • A photo of a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, with all four corners visible
  • Documentation of your income or the source of funds in your account

Approval typically takes one to two business days after everything is submitted. A blurry or poorly lit ID photo is the most common reason verification stalls.6Cash App. Verify Account

If you don’t have a Social Security number, Cash App accepts an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in the same flow. An ITIN is a nine-digit tax processing number the IRS issues to people who need to file a tax return but aren’t eligible for an SSN, and it works the same way for Cash App’s verification purposes.2Cash App. Why Do I Need to Verify My Identity (ID Verification)?

What Happens If You Don’t Verify

You can keep using Cash App without giving up your SSN, but the account stays boxed in. The $1,000 rolling limit and $1,500 lifetime cap don’t move. You also lose access to the Cash App Card, direct deposit, Bitcoin, and stock investing.1Cash App. Cash App Account Limits

For someone who only occasionally sends small amounts to friends, that may be fine. Anyone using Cash App as a primary financial tool will hit those limits quickly.

How to Tell the Real Request from a Scam

This is where people get hurt. The real verification request only ever appears inside the Cash App application, triggered by one of the account actions above. Cash App has been explicit that it will never ask for your Social Security number, PIN, or sign-in code by phone, email, or text.7Cash App. Avoid These 9 Common Scams

Two scam patterns target this exact moment. In the first, someone contacts you claiming to be Cash App customer support and says there’s a problem with your account they need your personal details to fix. In the second, a fake survey promises a reward but asks for your SSN or date of birth to participate. In both cases the goal is to harvest information the scammer can sell or use to break into your accounts.7Cash App. Avoid These 9 Common Scams

The rule to keep in mind: if anyone asks for your SSN, password, or login code outside the app, it isn’t Cash App. Close the message, don’t click any links, and open the app directly if you want to check your account status.
