Why Did Venmo Take a Fee? Credit Cards, Transfers, and Crypto

If Venmo took a fee from your payment or balance, it almost certainly came from one of these triggers: a payment tagged as goods or services, a personal payment funded by a credit card, an instant transfer to your bank, a check deposit through the app, a cryptocurrency trade, or an out-of-network ATM withdrawal on the Venmo Debit Card. A separate 24% deduction can appear on business payments when Venmo is required to send backup withholding to the IRS. Standard person-to-person payments funded by a bank account, debit card, or your Venmo balance are free.

The Payment Was Tagged as Goods or Services

This is the most common source of a surprise deduction on the receiving side. When a sender marks a payment as being for goods or services, or when the money is sent to a registered business profile, Venmo takes a seller fee out of what lands in your balance. The sender pays the full amount; you receive less.

On a personal account, the fee is 2.99% of the payment with no flat charge. A $100 goods-or-services payment leaves you with $97.01.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees Business profiles pay 1.9% plus $0.10 per standard in-app payment, or 2.29% plus $0.09 for contactless Tap to Pay.2Venmo. Business Profile Transaction Fees

The tag also activates Venmo’s Purchase Protection program for the buyer, which can reimburse them if an item never arrives or arrives significantly different from what was described.3Venmo. You Paid With a Credit Card

Sending a personal payment with a linked credit card adds a 3% fee on top of the amount you send. The charge lands on the sender, not the recipient. A $200 payment shows up as $206 on your credit card statement.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

Venmo shows this fee before you confirm the payment. Switching your funding source to a bank account, debit card, or your Venmo balance removes it entirely for personal payments.

You Chose an Instant Transfer to Your Bank

Moving money from Venmo to your bank offers two speeds. An instant transfer to an eligible U.S. bank account or Visa/Mastercard debit card typically arrives within 30 minutes and costs 1.75% of the transfer amount, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum.5Venmo. Instant Bank Transfer FAQ A $1,000 instant transfer costs $17.50.

The standard transfer to a verified checking account is free. It typically arrives within one business day and can take up to three, not counting weekends or U.S. bank holidays.6Venmo. Standard Bank Transfers FAQ

You Deposited a Check Through the App

Venmo’s in-app check cashing charges 1% on payroll and government checks with a pre-printed signature, and 5% on all other checks. Both have a $5.00 minimum fee.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

A $500 payroll check costs $5.00. A $500 personal check costs $25.00. Depositing the check through your bank’s own app and transferring the funds to Venmo afterward avoids the charge.

You Bought or Sold Cryptocurrency

Crypto trades on Venmo carry a percentage fee that shrinks as the trade size grows:

  • $1.00 to $74.99: 2.20%
  • $75.00 to $200.00: 2.00%
  • $200.01 to $1,000.00: 1.80%
  • Over $1,000: 1.50%

The fee comes out at the time of the trade, reducing the crypto you receive on a buy or the cash you receive on a sell. Trades involving PayPal USD (PYUSD) are exempt.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees Sending crypto to an external wallet outside the Venmo and PayPal network involves separate blockchain network fees that vary with conditions at the time of the transfer.7Venmo. You Used an Out-of-Network ATM

The Venmo Debit Card is free for online and in-store purchases, but ATM use is where fees appear. Withdrawals at in-network MoneyPass ATMs are free.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees Out-of-network U.S. ATMs cost $2.50 per withdrawal, and the ATM operator may add its own charge on top. International ATM withdrawals also cost $2.50 each, even when no currency conversion is involved.8Venmo. Venmo Debit Card FAQ

Cash back at checkout is free at merchants that accept Maestro or PULSE, which sidesteps the ATM fee entirely.8Venmo. Venmo Debit Card FAQ Adding cash to your Venmo balance at a participating store costs $3.74.1Venmo. About Venmo Fees

The Deduction Was Actually IRS Backup Withholding

Not every deduction that looks like a fee is one. If you receive payments for goods or services and have not given Venmo your tax identification number (such as your Social Security number), Venmo is required by the IRS to withhold 24% of those payments and forward the money to the IRS as backup withholding.9Venmo. Venmo Tax FAQ A 24% cut can easily look like an unexplained fee if you were not expecting it.

Adding your tax information in the app before you reach the reporting threshold stops the withholding. Payments sent to business profiles are automatically tagged as goods-or-services, so business profile owners should add tax details when setting up the account.9Venmo. Venmo Tax FAQ
