Where to Send Your TransUnion Dispute Letter

Mail your TransUnion dispute letter to TransUnion Consumer Solutions, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016-2000. That is the address TransUnion designates for dispute correspondence sent by standard or certified mail.1TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone Federal law gives you the right to challenge anything on your credit report you believe is inaccurate or incomplete, and TransUnion must investigate at no cost to you.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

The Mailing Address

Address your envelope exactly like this:

TransUnion Consumer Solutions
P.O. Box 2000
Chester, PA 19016-20001TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone

Both standard mail and certified mail go to the same P.O. box. TransUnion also offers a downloadable mailing label on its dispute page that can help ensure your envelope routes correctly. Writing “DISPUTE” on the outside of the envelope lets mail handlers move it to the right queue.

Use Certified Mail With Return Receipt

Certified mail with return receipt requested gives you a tracking number and a signed record of the date TransUnion received your letter. That date matters. The federal investigation deadline runs from the day the bureau receives your dispute, not the day you drop it in the mail.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy If a deadline is later missed and you need to file a complaint or take legal action, the receipt is your proof.

What to Put in the Letter

You do not need a special form. A plain letter is fine, as long as TransUnion can locate your file and tell exactly what you are disputing. Include:1TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone

  • Your full name, date of birth, and Social Security number.
  • Your current mailing address, where TransUnion will send the results.
  • Your TransUnion file number, if you have one from a prior report.
  • The name of the company that reported the disputed item, spelled as it appears on your credit report.
  • The partial account number, copied from your credit report rather than the creditor’s statement.
  • A brief explanation of why the entry is wrong. For example, the account was paid in full, or the balance is incorrect.

Attach copies of anything that supports your claim: bank statements, payment confirmations, court records, letters from the creditor. Send copies, not originals. TransUnion will not return documents after the investigation.3Annual Credit Report. Filing A Dispute

Keep the explanation focused. TransUnion can decline to investigate a dispute it considers frivolous or irrelevant, which usually happens when a letter is too vague for the bureau to identify what is being challenged.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports

If the Error Came From Identity Theft

When the entry you’re disputing is an account you never opened or activity you did not authorize, the FTC recommends filing a report at IdentityTheft.gov first to get a personalized recovery plan.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports Send a copy of the FTC identity theft report with your dispute letter, along with a police report if you filed one. Those documents can unlock stronger protections, including blocking the fraudulent information from reappearing on your report.

After TransUnion Receives Your Letter

Federal law gives TransUnion 30 days to complete the investigation once it receives your dispute.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy During that window, TransUnion forwards your letter and documents to the company that reported the information (the “furnisher”), which must investigate and report back.4Federal Trade Commission. The 30 days can stretch to 45 in two situations: if you send additional information during the initial window, or if you filed the dispute after pulling your free annual credit report.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Does It Take to Repair an Error on a Credit Report The extension does not apply if TransUnion determines within the original 30 days that the information is inaccurate or unverifiable. In that case, the bureau must act on that finding right away.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

You will get the results in writing. If the investigation leads to a change, TransUnion also sends you a free copy of your updated credit report, and that copy does not count against your free annual report from AnnualCreditReport.com.4Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports If the furnisher confirms the reported information was wrong, it must notify all three nationwide credit bureaus so their files match.

If the information is verified as accurate but you still disagree, you can add a brief statement of dispute to your file. TransUnion can hold that statement to 100 words if it helps you write a clear summary.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Once filed, your statement (or a summary of it) travels with the disputed entry on future reports.

Other Ways to Dispute, If You Prefer

Mail is not your only option. You can file online through the TransUnion Service Center and track the dispute’s status in real time, with email updates as the investigation progresses.6TransUnion. Dispute Your Credit Report by Mail or Phone A mailed letter has one advantage over the other channels: it produces a paper trail in your own words, with your documents attached, which can matter if the dispute later escalates.

If TransUnion Doesn’t Fix the Error

When the investigation ends and the problem is still on your report, you have two escalation paths.

The first is a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Before the CFPB will process a complaint about inaccurate credit information, you must have already disputed directly with TransUnion and either waited at least 45 days or confirmed the dispute is no longer pending. Filing a CFPB complaint while your TransUnion dispute is still open will get the complaint discontinued. You can submit online in about 7 to 10 minutes, or call (855) 411-2372, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, with phone support in more than 180 languages.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Credit and Consumer Reporting Complaint Notice

The second is a lawsuit under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. If a bureau or furnisher willfully fails to follow the FCRA, a successful claim can recover actual damages or statutory damages between $100 and $1,000 per violation, along with punitive damages, attorney’s fees, and court costs.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681n – Civil Liability for Willful Noncompliance A consumer rights attorney can tell you whether your situation supports a case, especially if the error cost you a loan, a better interest rate, or other measurable harm.
