You can cash a government check at your own bank or credit union (usually for free), at large retailers like Walmart and Kroger for a small flat fee, or at a dedicated check-cashing store for a percentage of the check’s face value. Every option requires a valid photo ID, and every option will pay you the same face amount minus whatever fee applies. Where to cash a government check comes down to what you already have access to and how much you’re willing to pay for speed and convenience.
One thing to know first: as of September 30, 2025, the federal government largely stopped issuing paper checks for benefits and tax refunds under Executive Order 14247.1The White House. Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account Millions of paper checks are still in circulation and limited exceptions still exist, so if you’re holding one, the options below all still apply.
What to Bring and How to Prepare the Check
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. A state driver’s license, a U.S. passport, or a military ID are the most widely accepted.2eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.415 – Purchases of Bank Checks and Drafts, Cashier’s Checks, Money Orders and Traveler’s Checks Some places also take a state non-driver ID card. If you don’t have a photo ID, certain locations may accept two secondary documents such as a Social Security card and a utility bill, but that’s up to the individual institution.
Don’t sign the back of the check until you’re at the teller window or service desk. A signed check that gets lost or stolen can be cashed by someone else. When you do sign, put your signature inside the small endorsement box or line at the top of the back of the check, and make it match the payee name on the front.
The check has to be in reasonable shape. Institutions will refuse checks that are badly torn, heavily stained, or show any sign of alteration to the name or amount. Treasury checks also carry a “Void After One Year” notice printed on them; federal rules give you 12 months from the issue date to cash the check before Treasury cancels it.3GovInfo. 31 CFR 240.5 – Limitations on Payment, Cancellation and Distribution of Proceeds of Checks
Your Bank or Credit Union
If you already have a checking or savings account, this is the cheapest and simplest option. Walk up to a teller with your check and ID, and you can either deposit the money or take some or all of it in cash. There’s typically no fee for account holders.
Federal Regulation CC requires your bank to make funds from a U.S. Treasury check available by the next business day after deposit, as long as you’re the person named on the check.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability Many banks release the full amount immediately for established customers.
Most banks also allow account holders to deposit government checks through their mobile app by photographing the front and back. Treasury checks deposited that way generally still qualify for next-business-day availability, though individual bank policies can vary.5eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Mobile deposit won’t give you cash, but it gets the funds moving without a trip to the branch.
What If You Don’t Have an Account There?
You can still walk into a bank without an account and ask them to cash your government check. Some will do it for a fee, often in the range of $5 to $10 depending on the institution and the check amount. Others decline non-customers entirely. Unlike a personal check drawn on a specific commercial bank, a government check isn’t tied to an “issuing bank” you can visit that has to cash it, so each branch sets its own policy. Call ahead if you’re not sure.
Walmart, Kroger, and Other Retailers
Large retailers and grocery chains cash government checks at their customer service or money services desks, and fees tend to be lower than at check-cashing storefronts. This is often the best option if you don’t have a bank account.
Walmart charges a maximum of $4 for government and other pre-printed checks up to $1,000, and a maximum of $8 for checks above $1,000. The standard check-cashing limit is $5,000, raised to $7,500 between January and April for tax refund season.6Walmart. Check Cashing You can take cash or load the proceeds onto a Walmart MoneyCard.
Kroger’s money services desks also cash government checks, generally up to $5,000, with fees that vary by location and state law.7Kroger. Check Cashing – Cash a Check Near You Money service desks at both chains often close earlier than the main store, so confirm hours before you drive over.
Check-Cashing Stores
Dedicated check-cashing businesses are built around fast cash and long hours, including evenings and weekends. The tradeoff is price. These stores usually charge a percentage of the check’s face value instead of a flat fee. Rates for government checks generally run between 1% and 3% of the check amount, depending on the state and the business. On a $1,500 Social Security check, that’s roughly $15 to $45, considerably more than a bank or a Walmart would charge.
Some states cap the percentage a check casher can charge on a government check, and many require the fee schedule to be posted where customers can see it. Ask to see the rates before you hand over the check, and do the math against the flat-fee options — the percentage really adds up on larger checks.
The process itself is quick: present the check and your ID, the clerk verifies the check electronically, deducts the fee, and hands you the balance in cash with a receipt. Hold on to the receipt.
If the Check Is Expired, Lost, or Stolen
Treasury checks are void one year after the issue date, and no bank or store will cash one past that point. To get a replacement, contact the federal agency that issued the payment.3GovInfo. 31 CFR 240.5 – Limitations on Payment, Cancellation and Distribution of Proceeds of Checks
For a lost or stolen IRS refund check, you can start a refund trace through “Where’s My Refund” on IRS.gov, by calling 800-829-1954 for the automated system, or by calling 800-829-1040 to speak to a representative.8Internal Revenue Service.
