When Does MOHELA Report to Credit Bureaus: Cycle, Forbearance, Disputes

MOHELA reports federal student loan account data to the four nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, and Innovis — once a month, using your loan status as of the last day of that month.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA After MOHELA transmits the file, each bureau takes additional time to process and load the data, so a payment or status change usually shows up on your credit report about two to three weeks after month-end. Different events follow different timelines, which is why a payoff, a servicer transfer, or a missed payment can each appear on your report on very different schedules.

The Monthly Reporting Cycle

MOHELA captures your account information on the last day of each month and sends a single batch to the credit bureaus. The transmission includes your current balance, payment status, and any changes in account standing.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA A payment you make on the 10th of the month will not show up in that report until the month-end snapshot goes out.

Once MOHELA sends the file, the bureaus need their own time to update your record. Checking your credit report a day or two after a payment posts to MOHELA usually won’t show the update yet. Give it roughly two to three weeks from the last day of the month before expecting to see the new information.

How Deferment and Forbearance Are Reported

Loans in deferment, forbearance, in-school status, or a grace period are still reported every month, but they are coded to reflect that status rather than shown as delinquent. A deferred loan is reported with a payment frequency of “deferred,” and a loan in forbearance carries a comment flag identifying it.2Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – CRI Your payment history stays marked current during these periods.

SAVE Plan Administrative Forbearance

Borrowers who enrolled in or applied for the SAVE repayment plan were placed into administrative forbearance after courts blocked parts of the plan. On your credit report, this forbearance should appear the same way as any other forbearance, with the account coded as current. Interest has been accruing on these loans since August 1, 2025, and time in this forbearance does not count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness or income-driven repayment forgiveness.3Federal Student Aid. Court Actions – Federal Student Aid You can leave the SAVE forbearance by switching to a different repayment plan through your servicer.4Federal Student Aid. Reporting After a Servicer Transfer

When your loans move to MOHELA from another servicer like Nelnet or Aidvantage, there is a temporary gap in credit reporting. The old servicer closes out the account and reports it as transferred, which can show on your credit report as “paid in full” even though you still owe the balance.5Federal Student Aid. So Your Loan Was Transferred—Whats Next? This is a normal part of the transfer, not loan forgiveness.

MOHELA then opens a new reporting line. It can take up to 30 business days — about six weeks — for your full payment history to be updated with the new servicer.5Federal Student Aid. So Your Loan Was Transferred—Whats Next? During that window your credit report may look incomplete, with the old account closed and the new one showing little history. Once MOHELA completes its first full billing cycle and month-end reporting, the new tradeline reflects your original loan details and payment record.

When a Late Payment Shows Up

MOHELA does not report a missed payment right away. Your account must be 90 or more days past due as of the last day of the month before the delinquency is transmitted to the bureaus.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA After that first report, continued delinquency is reported at 120 days, 150 days, and 180 or more days past due. If you catch up before the 90-day mark, no late payment goes to the credit bureaus.

That threshold gives you a real window to make up a missed payment before it damages your credit score. Interest still accrues while you are behind, and MOHELA may contact you about the overdue balance well before day 90. If you are struggling, enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan or requesting forbearance before reaching 90 days keeps the late payment off your credit report.

A loan enters default at 270 days delinquent, which appears as a separate negative entry and can remain on your credit report for up to seven years after the loan is resolved.2Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – CRI

After a Payoff or Forgiveness

When you make your final payment, MOHELA verifies the zero balance and closes the account before reporting the update. That generally takes 30 to 60 days from the date the final payment is processed. The paid-in-full status then goes out in the next monthly transmission to the bureaus.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If your loan is being discharged through PSLF, the timeline runs longer. After you reach 120 qualifying payments and submit your forgiveness request, a final review of your account takes about 60 business days.6Federal Student Aid. How to Manage your Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Progress on StudentAid.gov You’ll receive a notification from the Department of Education first, then a separate notification from MOHELA once the loan is discharged. The zero balance is included in the next monthly credit bureau transmission after that. Plan on roughly three to four months from submitting the forgiveness request to seeing the zero balance on your credit report.

Fixing Wrong Information

If your credit report shows something incorrect — a wrong balance, a delinquency you didn’t incur, or a status that doesn’t reflect a deferment or forbearance — you have two ways to file a dispute, and using both at the same time can move things along faster.

Disputing With MOHELA

Log in to your account at mohela.studentaid.gov, select “Upload” from the menu, and choose “Miscellaneous” as the document type to submit your dispute with supporting documentation. You can also mail documents to MOHELA at 633 Spirit Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63005-1243. Documentation matters most when the error involves a period you were in deferment, forbearance, or another protected status. MOHELA is not authorized to process “goodwill” adjustments; they can only correct information that was reported inaccurately.1Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting – MOHELA

Disputing With the Credit Bureau

You can also file a dispute directly with whichever bureau is showing the error. Under federal law, the bureau must investigate and either correct or delete the item within 30 days of receiving your notice.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy The bureau will contact MOHELA to verify the data. If MOHELA confirms the reported information was wrong, the correction shows up on your report after the investigation closes.
