Experian updates your credit report on a rolling basis, pulling in new data from each creditor as it arrives rather than refreshing your whole file on a single day. Most lenders send updated account information about once a month, so your report changes in waves across any 30-day window. Because each creditor picks its own reporting date, different accounts on your file refresh at different times.
The Monthly Reporting Cycle
Your lenders and card issuers are the source of almost everything on your report. They transmit account data to Experian in a standardized industry format called Metro 2, batching thousands of consumer records into a single file and uploading it on whatever schedule their internal policies set.1Experian. Metro 2 Reporting and Compliance
The typical cycle is once per month. A large bank might send its file on the fifth; a credit union might send on the twentieth. There is no industry-wide reporting date, which is why your Experian file can look slightly different from one day to the next.2Experian. How Often Is a Credit Report Updated? Federal rules require furnishers to keep written policies aimed at accuracy and to update the information they send so it reflects the current status of your accounts.3eCFR. 16 CFR Part 660 – Duties of Furnishers of Information to Consumer Reporting Agencies
Once a batch file arrives, Experian processes it on a rolling basis. Your report can change several times in the same week if several of your creditors happen to report within a few days of each other. If a creditor misses its normal window, that particular account may look frozen until the next transmission.
Why the Payment You Just Made Isn’t There Yet
The most common frustration is the gap between paying a card and seeing the lower balance on your report. Credit card issuers usually report your balance as of the statement closing date, not in real time. If your billing cycle ends on the fifteenth and your issuer transmits data on the twenty-fifth, your report can show a balance that was already ten days old before Experian even received it.4Experian. When Do Credit Card Payments Get Reported
This matters most for credit utilization. The balance that reaches Experian is the one from your last statement closing date, so a big payment made the day after the statement closes won’t show up until the next cycle. If you want a lower balance on file before applying for a loan, pay down the card before the statement closing date, not after.
How Fast Different Items Show Up
Not every entry on your file follows the monthly account cycle. Some appear almost instantly; others lag by weeks.
Hard Inquiries
Inquiries are the fastest-updating item on your report. When a lender pulls your credit to evaluate an application, the inquiry appears on your Experian file almost immediately, because it’s generated the moment the lender requests the report.2Experian. How Often Is a Credit Report Updated? Hard inquiries stay on your report for two years, though their score impact fades well before that.
Collection Accounts
When a debt goes to a collection agency, the collector reports on its own monthly cycle, separate from the original creditor. After you pay off a collection, expect one to two months before your Experian report shows the updated paid status.5Experian. How Long Before My Collection Account Is Updated
Bankruptcies
Bankruptcies don’t flow through the same channel as your card balance. The courts do not report directly to credit bureaus. Instead, the bureaus collect bankruptcy information from public court records, including the federal PACER system.6United States Courts. Bankruptcy Case Records and Credit Reporting Because a third-party data collection step sits in the middle, bankruptcies generally take longer to appear on your report than a routine account update, and the courts have no control over how quickly the bureaus pull or process the record.7United States Bankruptcy Court. When You Can’t Wait a Month: Rapid Rescore
The standard update cycle is a problem when you’re trying to close on a house. Experian offers a service called Express Request that lets mortgage lenders submit corrected account information and get an updated credit file within roughly two to five business days.8Experian. What Is a Rapid Rescore It’s the fastest way to reflect a corrected error or a newly paid-down balance. One limit worth knowing: only your mortgage lender can initiate a rapid rescore. You cannot request one on your own.9Experian. Express Request – Fast, Simple Consumer Credit Dispute Resolution
For ordinary errors, the regular dispute process applies. Federal law gives Experian 30 days from the date it receives your dispute to investigate and respond, plus up to 15 additional days if you supply new relevant information during the investigation.10Federal Trade Commission. When Old Negative Items Should Fall Off
Some items don’t need a new update to disappear. Federal law caps how long Experian can keep most negative entries, and they should drop off automatically once the clock runs out.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
- Late payments: seven years from the date the payment was first missed.
- Collection accounts: seven years from the original delinquency date on the underlying account, not from the date the debt went to collections.5Experian. How Long Before My Collection Account Is Updated

- Chapter 7 bankruptcy: ten years from the filing date.12Experian. When Is a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Deleted
- Hard inquiries: two years from the date of the inquiry.
If a negative entry lingers past its expiration date, that’s grounds for a dispute.
Watching Your Report as It Changes
Because your file moves in fragments, checking it more often gives you a better read on what’s actually happening. The three national bureaus have permanently extended a program that lets you pull your credit report from each bureau once a week for free through AnnualCreditReport.com, the only site authorized by the federal government for the free annual reports. Through 2026, Equifax is offering six additional free reports a year through the same portal.13Federal Trade Commission. Free Credit Reports
Experian’s own website and mobile app show your most recent file and can send push notifications when something significant changes, including new accounts, new inquiries, or changes to your personal information.
If you want to add positive data that your creditors don’t normally send, Experian Boost connects to your bank accounts and adds on-time payment history for utility bills, phone bills, insurance premiums, streaming services, and online rent. Once you verify and confirm the accounts, any change to your FICO Score based on Experian data shows up immediately.14Experian. What Is Experian Boost Boost only affects your Experian-based scores, so lenders pulling your report from TransUnion or Equifax won’t see the added accounts.
