Equifax doesn’t update your credit score on a set schedule. The score is calculated fresh every time someone requests it, using whatever information is in your credit file at that moment. The file itself changes as your creditors send in new data, which usually happens at least once a month per account. So the honest answer to when does Equifax update your credit score is: continuously in the background, and instantly on request.
Why There Is No Fixed Update Schedule
Your Equifax score is not a number stored somewhere waiting to be looked up. It’s generated on the spot each time a lender, landlord, monitoring service, or you yourself pull it. The scoring model runs against the current contents of your report, so even a few days between two requests can produce different numbers if new information landed in between.
The data feeding those calculations refreshes at least once every 30 days, as creditors send updated account information on a rolling basis.1Experian. How Often Is a Credit Report Updated? If you watch your score through a monitoring product, you’ll see a viewable number update on that product’s schedule. Equifax Core Credit, the bureau’s free service, refreshes your VantageScore 3.0 and credit report once a month.2Equifax. Are Scores from FICO and VantageScore Different?
Creditor Reporting Cycles Drive Most Changes
The biggest reason your Equifax data shifts is that your creditors report on their own timelines. Banks, credit card issuers, and mortgage servicers each send an electronic file to the bureau, generally once a month and often on or near your statement closing date.3Equifax. You Ask, Equifax Answers: How Often Do Credit Card Companies Report to the Credit Bureaus Every creditor sets its own date. A card issuer might report on the 10th while your auto lender reports on the 22nd, and each transmission can move your score.
This matters most for credit utilization, the share of your available credit you’re using. If a card issuer reports right after a large purchase but before you pay it down, your utilization looks higher than usual and your score may temporarily dip. Paying down a balance before the statement closing date can help ensure the reported figure is a lower one.
Reporting Is Voluntary
Creditors aren’t legally required to send your account data to any credit bureau. Furnishing information is a voluntary practice.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Can I Opt Out of Having Creditors Report My Accounts to Credit Reporting Companies? Some report to all three major bureaus, some to only one or two, and a few not at all. That’s why your Equifax file may not match your Experian or TransUnion files, and why the same day can produce different scores across bureaus.
Creditors that do report have a legal duty to be accurate. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a furnisher cannot report information it knows or has reasonable cause to believe is inaccurate, and if it discovers a mistake in what it already sent, it must promptly notify the bureau and provide corrections.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681s-2 – Responsibilities of Furnishers of Information to Consumer Reporting Agencies
How Long New Accounts and Inquiries Take to Show Up
Open a new credit card or loan and don’t expect it on your Equifax report right away. A brand-new account typically takes 30 to 60 days to appear, depending on when the issuer’s first reporting cycle falls after opening.6Experian. Why Is My New Credit Card Not Showing on My Credit Report During that window, it doesn’t factor into your score at all.
Hard inquiries move faster. The record of a lender pulling your credit for a lending decision generally appears within one to two days. If you’re rate-shopping for a mortgage or auto loan, keep in mind that most scoring models treat multiple inquiries for the same loan type inside a short window, typically 14 to 45 days depending on the model, as a single inquiry. Grouping applications together limits the impact.
Faster Paths When You Need a Change Reflected Sooner
Rapid Rescoring During a Mortgage Application
If you’re mid-application on a mortgage and need a recent payment or balance change on your Equifax report faster than the normal cycle, your lender can request a rapid rescore. The process usually takes three to five business days.7Equifax. What Is a Rapid Rescore? You can’t request one yourself; only your mortgage lender can initiate it. You’ll need documentation proving the change, such as a bank statement showing a payoff, a confirmation receipt, or an updated account statement showing a lower balance.8Experian. What Is a Rapid Rescore? It’s most useful when a small score bump could move you into a better interest rate tier or clear a minimum-score threshold.
Dispute Corrections
When you spot a wrong balance, a payment marked late that wasn’t, or an account you don’t recognize, you have the right to dispute it. The FCRA gives the bureau 30 days to investigate and resolve the dispute, extendable to 45 days if you supply additional information mid-investigation.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Once the file is corrected, the next score request pulls the fixed data, so the score effect is immediate. The bureau also has to send you written notice of the investigation results within five business days of finishing it.
The Score You See May Not Be the One a Lender Uses
Different scoring models can produce different numbers from the same underlying data. Equifax Core Credit shows a VantageScore 3.0.2Equifax. Are Scores from FICO and VantageScore Different?
