What Time of Day Do ACH Transactions Post to Your Bank?

ACH transactions typically post to your bank account between midnight and 9:00 AM local time on the settlement date, though the exact time depends on which processing window catches the payment and when your bank runs its posting cycle. Standard next-day ACH credits, including most payroll direct deposits, are available in employees’ accounts by 9:00 AM on payday in nearly all cases.1Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet Same-day ACH payments can settle as late as 6:00 PM Eastern Time, so a payment sent later in the day may not appear until the evening or the next morning.

Why Most Direct Deposits Arrive Before You Wake Up

The bulk of ACH transactions, including payroll and recurring bill payments, run on a next-day cycle. After the sender’s bank submits the file, the ACH operator processes it overnight. The Federal Reserve distributes these files to receiving banks starting around 6:00 AM ET, with settlement at 8:30 AM ET on the next business day.2Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule

Many banks run their first posting batch between midnight and 6:00 AM, so a direct deposit can appear before you check your phone in the morning. Others wait until after the 8:30 AM Fed settlement to post. Either way, Nacha’s data shows funds are in the account by 9:00 AM on payday in virtually all cases.1Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet

Same-Day ACH: Three Windows Through the Business Day

If a payment is submitted for same-day ACH, it will post at one of three specific points during the day. The Federal Reserve publishes this schedule:2Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule

  • First window: files must reach the ACH operator by 10:30 AM ET; settlement occurs at 1:00 PM ET.
  • Second window: transmission deadline is 2:45 PM ET; settlement at 5:00 PM ET.
  • Third window: transmission deadline is 4:45 PM ET; settlement at 6:00 PM ET.

Settlement isn’t quite the same as posting. Once the ACH operator settles the batch, your bank still has to process the file and credit your account. A payment caught by the first window can show up by early afternoon; one that settles at 6:00 PM ET may not appear until the bank’s next processing cycle, which for many institutions means overnight.

Same-day ACH payments can be up to $1 million each.3Nacha. Same Day ACH International ACH transactions don’t qualify for same-day processing and settle on the next business day instead. Re-presented and destroyed check entries are capped at $2,500 for same-day eligibility; anything larger rolls to the next business day.4Federal Reserve Financial Services. Why Your Deposit May Post Later Than You Expect

Two things push posting times around: when the sender submitted the payment and how your own bank handles incoming files.

The sender’s bank has its own daily cut-off for accepting ACH files. Miss the cut-off by a minute and the transaction slides to the next business day, adding a full day to when you’ll see it. Most banks set cut-offs somewhere between early afternoon and 5:00 PM ET for same-day eligible files, with different deadlines for standard next-day transfers.5Nacha. SDA Schedules and Funds Availability

On the receiving side, your bank chooses how often to post incoming ACH files. Some post continuously throughout the day; others run scheduled batches, so a payment that settled at 1:00 PM ET might not appear until the next batch runs. Under Regulation CC, banks must make funds from an ACH credit available for withdrawal no later than the business day after the banking day the bank received the payment, but that’s a legal ceiling, not a description of how fast most banks actually post.6eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability

The 9:00 AM Rule Coming in September 2026

Nacha has adopted a change that will tighten posting times for standard ACH credits. Starting September 18, 2026, receiving banks will have to make non-same-day ACH credits available for withdrawal no later than 9:00 AM in the bank’s local time on the settlement date.7Nacha. Funds Availability Requirements for Non-Same Day Credit Entries Today’s requirement ties availability to 5:00 PM local time on the settlement date, so the shift moves the outer limit from late afternoon to mid-morning. If your bank currently posts your direct deposit later in the day, that behavior has an expiration date.

Same-day ACH credits already carry a faster requirement: receiving banks must make the funds available by the end of the processing day on which settlement occurs.5Nacha. SDA Schedules and Funds Availability

Weekends and Federal Holidays

ACH payments only settle on business days when the Federal Reserve’s National Settlement Service is open. No settlement happens on weekends or on the eleven federal holidays the Federal Reserve observes, including New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.8Federal Reserve Financial Services. Federal Reserve System Holiday Schedule

A file submitted on Saturday won’t begin processing until Monday morning. If Monday is a federal holiday, settlement pushes to Tuesday. The Federal Reserve’s settlement system reopens at 7:30 AM ET on the next available business day, and the first batch begins processing shortly after.9Nacha. Payments Myth Busting Your mobile banking app may show the transaction as pending across the weekend, but the funds don’t legally become available until the network resumes.

One consumer-friendly quirk: bill payments due over a weekend or holiday are collected on the next banking day, so you won’t be charged late just because the calendar created a gap.1Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet

Money You Pull In by ACH Debit

The timing above covers ACH credits, meaning money someone sends into your account. Transfers you initiate from another bank by ACH debit work differently. When you pull funds in this way, the receiving institution can place a hold before making the money available, and those hold periods are set by your account agreement rather than by the availability rules that apply to credits.10Nacha. Balancing the Need for New Deposits Against Fraud Risk In practice, funds pulled in this way often take two to four business days to become fully available, even after the transaction settles. So if you’re timing a bill against an incoming transfer, know whether the payment is a credit sent to you or a debit you’re pulling; the posting picture is not the same.
