To complete the FAFSA for a dependent student, the parent contributor needs to hand over identity details (full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, mailing address, and a working email), current marital status and household size, consent to transfer their 2024 federal tax information from the IRS, and manually entered values for certain assets as of the day the form is signed. Which parent counts as the contributor — and whether a stepparent also has to file information — depends on your family’s living arrangements. Everything below walks through what parent information is needed for the FAFSA, in the order you’ll actually gather it.
Which Parent Has to Provide Information
The FAFSA calls anyone required to provide information a “contributor.” The rules turn on the family’s situation during the twelve months before you file:
- Married parents living together: both parents’ financial information is reported. If they filed a joint tax return, only one parent needs to complete the contributor section, since the joint return covers both.
- Divorced or separated parents: the contributor is the parent who provided more financial support during the last twelve months. If support was equal, it’s the parent with the greater income and assets. This holds even if you don’t live with that parent.1Federal Student Aid. Reporting Parent Information
- Unmarried parents living together: both are contributors, regardless of whether they ever married each other.2Federal Student Aid. Which Parent Do I List as a Contributor
- Remarried contributing parent: the stepparent’s financial information is also required.
A legal guardian who has not adopted the student is not a parent for FAFSA purposes. Students in foster care, wards of the court, and students whose parents are both deceased may qualify as independent, which removes the parental information requirement entirely.
Identity and Account Details
Each parent contributor supplies their full legal name exactly as it appears on government-issued documents, their Social Security number, date of birth, and mailing address. The FAFSA Processing System matches the name and date of birth against Social Security Administration records to verify identity.3Federal Student Aid. 2025-2026 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Social Security Number A small mismatch — a maiden name, a typo in the birth date — can hold up processing.
Every contributor needs their own working email address tied to their own StudentAid.gov account. The email is how the student’s contributor invitation reaches the parent, and without account access the parent cannot complete their section. Two parent contributors cannot share one email or one account.
Parents also report their marital status as of the day the form is signed, along with the month and year that status began.4Federal Student Aid Handbook. Chapter 2 Filling Out the FAFSA Form Don’t project a future status. The parent also reports the number of people in the household, which feeds into the Student Aid Index calculation.
Tax Information and IRS Consent
The 2026–27 FAFSA uses 2024 tax data.5Federal Student Aid. When Should I Correct or Update My FAFSA Information Most of it moves automatically through the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX), which replaced the older IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
Consent is not optional. Every contributor must approve the Department of Education pulling their federal tax information directly from the IRS.6Federal Student Aid Handbook. Application and Verification Guide Without that consent the tax data will not transfer, and the FAFSA cannot be fully processed. Consent happens inside the online application; there’s nothing to file separately with the IRS.
The main figures the FA-DDX pulls from a parent’s 2024 Form 1040 include:
- Adjusted Gross Income, from line 11.
- Total tax paid, from line 24.
- Untaxed income items that don’t appear in AGI, such as tax-exempt interest (line 2a) and IRA distributions (line 4a).7Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040 – U.S. Individual Income Tax Return 2024
Because these transfer directly, a parent who filed a standard federal return typically doesn’t type in tax numbers. Keep the return handy anyway so you can confirm the imported figures look right.
Assets the Parent Must Enter Manually
Asset values are not pulled from the IRS. The parent enters them as of the day the form is signed.
What gets reported:
- Cash, savings, and checking account balances, combined across all accounts, on the day of signing.
- Investments — the net worth of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate other than the primary home. Net worth means current market value minus any debt on that asset.
- The net worth of any businesses or investment farms the parent owns, including small family businesses and family farms. These are no longer excluded.8Federal Student Aid. Current Net Worth of Businesses and Investment Farms
- 529 education savings plans where the parent is the account owner and the student is the beneficiary. Grandparent-owned 529s are not reported, and distributions from them no longer count against the student’s aid eligibility.
- Child support received during the last complete calendar year, reported as an asset rather than as untaxed income.9U.S. Department of Education. FAFSA Simplification Questions and Answers
What stays off the form:
- The primary residence, even if it sits on farmland, as long as it’s the main home and isn’t used commercially or for farming.8Federal Student Aid. Current Net Worth of Businesses and Investment Farms
- Retirement accounts — 401(k)s, IRAs, Roth IRAs, pensions, annuities, and other qualified plans.
- Child support paid, which no longer appears on the FAFSA.9U.S. Department of Education. FAFSA Simplification Questions and Answers
If the net value in any category is zero or negative, enter zero. You cannot report a negative asset value.
Parents Without a Social Security Number
A parent without an SSN can still complete their portion. When creating a StudentAid.gov account, the parent checks a box indicating they don’t have an SSN and continues with a limited account, providing name, date of birth, email, mailing address, and mobile phone number.
Identity verification runs through knowledge-based questions drawn from personal information and credit bureau records. If the automated check fails, the Department of Education may require manual verification: either one document from a primary list (such as a valid passport, driver’s license, permanent resident card, or consular ID) or two documents from a secondary list (such as a birth certificate paired with a photo ID).10Federal Student Aid. Update Regarding StudentAid.gov Account Creation for Individuals Without a Social Security Number
Parents without an SSN cannot use the FA-DDX. They enter income and asset information manually, using a foreign tax return or other financial records.
Parents Who Filed a Foreign Tax Return
A parent who filed with a foreign government uses that return to complete the FAFSA. If the foreign return has no line labeled Adjusted Gross Income, the parent reports the equivalent: wages, dividends, capital gains, business income, and retirement distributions, minus any adjustments to income.11Federal Student Aid. If a Parent Refuses to Provide Information
Without the parent’s section, the student cannot receive most federal aid, including Pell Grants and subsidized loans. A parent’s unwillingness alone does not qualify the student for a dependency override to independent status.12Federal Student Aid Handbook. Chapter 5 Special Cases
A narrow option exists. A financial aid administrator can use professional judgment to offer a dependent-level Direct Unsubsidized Loan if the parent both refuses to complete the FAFSA and has ended financial support.13Federal Student Aid Handbook. Student and Parent Eligibility for Direct Loans The school needs third-party documentation of the situation, such as a statement from a teacher, counselor, or member of the clergy. The student submits a FAFSA that results in a rejected application with no SAI, and only the unsubsidized loan is awarded. No Pell Grant, no subsidized loan, no other Title IV aid.
Deadlines and How Submission Works
The 2026–27 FAFSA opens in the fall and must be submitted by the federal deadline of June 30, 2027.14USA.gov. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Many states and colleges set earlier priority deadlines, often in February or March, so filing early protects your aid options.
The student starts the form on StudentAid.gov and sends a contributor invitation to the parent’s email. The parent clicks the secure link, logs in with their own FSA ID, provides consent for the IRS data transfer, and completes the personal, tax-consent, and asset sections. The FSA ID counts as a legally binding electronic signature.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC Chapter 96 – Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce16Federal Student Aid.
