What Is a Share Draft Withdrawal and How Does It Work?

A share draft withdrawal is the credit union version of a check or debit payment clearing your account. When you see the phrase on a statement, it means money left your credit union account through a draft you wrote, a debit card purchase, or an electronic payment tied to that account. The mechanics look identical to a bank checking withdrawal, but the account underneath works a little differently, and a few of those differences matter when something goes wrong.

Why It’s Called a Share Draft Instead of a Check

At a bank, your deposit makes the bank your debtor. At a credit union, your money buys shares in a financial cooperative, so your “checking account” is technically a share draft account and you’re a part-owner. Federal law authorizes credit unions to offer these accounts under 12 U.S.C. ยง 1757(6), with the NCUA’s operating rules at 12 CFR 701.35.1eCFR. 12 CFR 701.35 – Share, Share Draft, and Share Certificate Accounts

Because the balance represents equity, most credit unions require you to keep a small minimum on hand to preserve your membership. That figure often sits between $5 and $25; the NCUA’s Truth in Savings disclosures use $5 as the par value of a share.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 707 – Truth in Savings That minimum is also what gives you the right to vote on credit union business.

Share draft accounts at federally insured credit unions are covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund up to $250,000 per depositor per institution, matching FDIC coverage at banks. Retirement accounts like IRAs get a separate $250,000.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 1787 – Payment of Insurance Coverage is automatic if the credit union displays the NCUA logo.

How a Share Draft Withdrawal Actually Moves

A paper share draft looks and works like a personal check: routing number on the bottom left, account number next to it, date, payee, amount in figures and in words, signature. You can hand it to a payee, deposit it at a teller window, mail it, or submit it through mobile deposit. The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act made a properly created digital image of a draft the legal equivalent of the paper original.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 5003 – General Provisions Governing Substitute Checks

From there the draft enters the automated clearing system, which routes it back to your credit union for verification. The credit union checks that your share balance covers the amount. If it doesn’t, most institutions charge a non-sufficient funds fee, though the exact amount varies. Once the payment posts, it shows up on your statement as a completed withdrawal.

If you’re trying to cash a draft in person at an institution where you don’t have an account, expect to show government-issued ID. A bank or credit union is allowed to require identification before cashing a check drawn on one of its own accounts.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. When You Can Actually Use the Money

The Expedited Funds Availability Act, implemented through Regulation CC, covers share draft accounts and controls how quickly deposited funds become available.6eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) For most check deposits, the credit union must make the funds available no later than the second business day after the banking day of deposit.

When Longer Holds Are Allowed

The two-day rule has exceptions. Regulation CC lets a credit union extend a hold in specific situations:7eCFR. 12 CFR 229.13 – Exceptions

  • Large deposits: when your total check deposits on a single banking day top $6,725, the excess can be held up to five additional business days.
  • Reasonable doubt about collectibility: the credit union can extend a hold if it has specific, fact-based reasons to believe a check won’t clear, and it must send you written notice explaining why.
  • New accounts: deposits into accounts open fewer than 30 days face longer hold periods.

When an exception applies, the credit union is required to notify you. If a deposit seems stuck longer than you’d expect, look for a hold notice before assuming something went wrong.

Canceling a Share Draft Before It Clears

If you’ve sent a share draft and need to stop it, you can issue a stop payment order. Under the Uniform Commercial Code, anyone authorized to draw on the account can stop payment by giving the credit union enough detail to identify the draft and enough time to act before it’s paid.8Cornell Law School. UCC 4-403 – Customers Right to Stop Payment; Burden of Proof of Loss

A written stop payment order lasts six months and can be renewed. An oral order lapses after 14 calendar days unless you confirm it in writing. Most credit unions charge a fee, and if they pay the draft in spite of your order, the burden of proving the loss is on you. Call as soon as you know something is wrong; once the draft has already been paid, a stop payment won’t reverse it.

If a Withdrawal Wasn’t Yours

Two different laws govern unauthorized share draft withdrawals, and both have hard deadlines.

Forged Paper Drafts

If someone forges your signature on a physical draft, the UCC gives you one year from the date your statement is made available to discover and report the forgery. Miss that window and you lose the right to hold the credit union responsible, no matter how obvious the fraud.9Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 4-406 – Customers Duty to Discover and Report Unauthorized Signature or Alteration Reviewing statements is the only reliable protection.

Unauthorized Electronic Withdrawals

For electronic transactions, such as a stolen debit card number pulling money from your share draft account, Regulation E sets tiered liability based on how quickly you report:10eCFR. 12 CFR 205.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers

  • Report within 2 business days of discovering the loss, and your liability is capped at $50.
  • Report after 2 business days but within 60 days of the statement, and liability can reach $500.
  • Report after 60 days from the statement, and you could be responsible for the full amount of any unauthorized transfers occurring after that window.

The clock starts whether you’ve opened the statement or not. Transaction alerts through the credit union’s app are the simplest way to catch a bad withdrawal in time.

How Earnings on the Account Are Taxed

Because your balance represents equity, the money the credit union pays you is called a dividend rather than interest. Federal credit unions pay dividends on share accounts; only state-chartered credit unions operating under state law may offer deposit accounts that pay interest in the traditional sense.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 707 – Truth in Savings

The IRS treats those dividends the same as bank interest. Your credit union reports them on Form 1099-INT (not a dividend form) if you earn $10 or more in a tax year, and you report the amount as interest income on your federal return.11IRS. Publication 1099 – General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2026) The tax hit on a typical share draft balance is small, but the 1099-INT still needs to make it onto your return.
