If you miss an Afterpay payment, nothing punitive happens on day one. Afterpay gives you a grace period of about 10 days before charging a late fee of up to $8, but your account is frozen the moment a payment fails, your future spending limit can drop, and each automated retry against an empty bank account can add its own overdraft fee. Leave the balance unpaid for roughly 90 days and Afterpay may hand it to a collection agency, which can sit on your credit report for up to seven years.
The Grace Period and the $8 Late Fee
A missed installment on a Pay-in-4 order does not trigger an immediate fee. You have roughly 10 days to catch up before Afterpay charges anything. After that window, a single late fee of up to $8 is applied to the missed installment, and only one fee can be charged per installment — a second $8 charge cannot stack onto the same missed payment.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending
Total late fees on a single order are capped at 25% of the original purchase price. On a $100 order, the most you could ever owe in late fees across all four installments is $25.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending Pay Monthly orders work differently: Afterpay does not charge late fees on those longer-term plans.
Your Account Freezes Right Away
The freeze does not wait for the grace period. As soon as a scheduled payment fails, Afterpay pauses your account, and you cannot make any new purchases until every overdue installment and any associated late fee is paid in full.2Afterpay. I Missed a Payment – What Happens to My Account
Catching up unfreezes the account, but it may not restore what you had before. Afterpay uses an internal risk assessment that rewards consistent on-time payments and pulls back access from users who fall behind. A single missed payment can result in a noticeably lower spending limit going forward, and rebuilding that limit takes time and a run of on-time payments.2Afterpay. Automated Retries Can Cost You at the Bank
After a failed charge, Afterpay’s terms allow it to re-attempt processing at a later time using any payment method on file until the balance clears. The company does not publish the retry schedule or the number of attempts.
Each retry that lands on an underfunded account can trigger a separate overdraft or non-sufficient-funds fee from your bank. Those bank fees typically run from about $17 to $35 per failed transaction. A single missed Afterpay installment can end up costing the $8 late fee plus one or more of those bank charges if multiple retries fail in a row. Paying the overdue amount manually in the app, or updating your payment method, stops further retry attempts.
Credit Reports and Collections
Afterpay does not report standard Pay-in-4 payment history — good or bad — to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. One missed installment on a typical purchase will not appear on your credit report or lower your credit score. The soft credit check Afterpay may run at signup does not affect your score either.
Two things can still put your credit at risk. Experian has built a separate database to track BNPL activity, so as more providers share data, your BNPL history may become visible to lenders who request it, even though it is not yet factored into traditional credit scores.3Experian. Buy Now, Pay Later
The bigger risk is collections. If your balance stays unpaid for roughly 90 days, Afterpay may transfer the debt to a third-party collection agency, and Afterpay typically steps back once that handoff happens. The collector can then report the account as a collection item on your credit report, where it can remain for up to seven years from the date the account first became delinquent.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports That mark can make it harder to qualify for mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards during that time.
Once a third-party collector is involved, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act applies. Collectors cannot use abusive, deceptive, or unfair tactics, must identify themselves, cannot call at unreasonable hours, and must stop contacting you if you send a written cease-communication request. You also have 30 days from first contact to dispute the debt in writing, which forces the collector to verify the amount before continuing.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose
What to Do Before or After You Miss a Payment
If you know a due date is going to be a problem, Afterpay lets you push a payment back by up to five days through the app or website, up to three times per calendar year across all your orders.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending A few limits apply:
- You can only reschedule one payment per order with the self-service tool.
- The first and last installments cannot be moved through self-service; you have to contact Afterpay in the app.
- A payment cannot be moved if it is already overdue or due within the next 24 hours.
- Pay Monthly orders have fixed due dates and cannot be rescheduled this way.
Rescheduling before the due date keeps the account in good standing, avoids the late fee entirely, and protects your spending limit.6Afterpay Help Center. Can I Change the Due Date of a Payment
If a bigger setback is in play — job loss, illness, a natural disaster, or a major unexpected expense — Afterpay has a formal hardship program you can request through the mobile app. Depending on your situation, Afterpay may adjust your payment schedule, waive late fees already charged or coming due, or set up a custom repayment plan based on what you can afford. It may also place the account on hold while it reviews your request, which prevents additional fees from piling up.7Afterpay Help Center. What Is Financial Hardship Reaching out before you fall behind gives you the best chance of getting fees waived.
If a payment has already failed and you just need to clear it, open the Afterpay app or log in on the website, find the order marked overdue, and pay it. If the original card or bank account failed because of insufficient funds or expiration, add a new payment method first. Paying manually also stops the automated retries, which is what keeps bank fees from stacking up on top of the Afterpay charge. Do it inside the 10-day grace period and you avoid the late fee entirely; do it soon after and you limit the drop to your spending limit.
