Liberty Tax Refund Advance: Options, Costs, and Speed

The Liberty Tax Refund Advance is a short-term loan issued by Republic Bank & Trust Company against your expected federal tax refund when you file at a participating Liberty Tax office. For the 2026 filing season, amounts run from $100 to $6,250 across three products, and repayment happens automatically when your refund lands in a temporary bank account the lender opens in your name.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance

Liberty Tax itself isn’t the lender. Republic Bank makes the credit decision, sets the terms, and takes the loss if your refund doesn’t cover what you borrowed. Liberty Tax prepares your return and submits the loan application at the same time.

The Three Advance Options for 2026

Which product you can apply for depends on when you file and how large your expected refund is.

How to Qualify

Republic Bank runs a soft credit check that won’t affect your credit score, but it still looks at your credit history. The bank is trying to gauge one thing: whether your refund will actually arrive in full. Two situations make that unlikely, and either can lead to denial.

The first is a refund that’s too small. Each tier has a minimum refund threshold, and your refund also has to be large enough to cover the loan plus preparation fees and the Refund Transfer fee. The second is exposure to government offset. If you owe child support, defaulted student loans, past-due federal or state taxes, or state unemployment compensation debts, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service can take part or all of your refund before the bank sees it.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) Offsets for Non-Tax Debts The bank screens for that risk upfront.

Maxed-out credit lines, significant delinquencies, or a prior refund advance that wasn’t fully repaid can also count against you.

Bring the following to your appointment:

  • A government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport.
  • Proof of income: W-2s if you’re an employee, 1099s if you’re an independent contractor, or whatever documentation applies to your situation.
  • Bank account details if you want the balance of your refund deposited by ACH. Otherwise, funds can go on a DeepBlue Debit Account prepaid card issued by Republic Bank.3Liberty Tax Service. Easy 100 Loan

You can’t apply online or on your own. The loan application is built into the tax preparation appointment.

How Fast You Get the Money

Underwriting is automated and usually returns a decision within minutes of your preparer submitting the application. Approval doesn’t mean instant cash, though. Funds become available after the IRS formally accepts your e-filed return, which can take a few hours to a couple of days during peak filing season. Once acceptance happens, approved proceeds are typically available within 24 hours.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance

The money reaches you one of two ways. It can be loaded onto a DeepBlue prepaid card at your Liberty Tax office, which is usually the faster route, or deposited to your personal bank account by ACH.

What It Actually Costs

Repayment is automatic and happens through a Refund Transfer account, a temporary bank account Republic Bank opens in your name. You authorize the IRS to send your full refund there. When it arrives, the bank deducts what it’s owed in this order: loan principal and finance charge, then the Refund Transfer fee, then your Liberty Tax preparation fees. Whatever’s left is forwarded to you.

The Refund Transfer fee is $44.95 for the standard product, plus $14 for any subsequent deposits into the temporary account.5Republic Bank. Pricing Plans Preparation fees are separate and depend on the complexity of your return.

The take-home number matters more than the loan amount. On an expected $3,000 refund with a $500 Easy Advance that carries a finance charge, plus the $44.95 Refund Transfer fee, plus preparation fees in the $50 to $100 range, you can easily lose $200 or more before the refund reaches you. Waiting for the IRS to deposit the refund directly would keep that money in your pocket.

Republic Bank must give you a Truth in Lending disclosure before you sign, showing the finance charge in dollars, the APR, the total you’ll pay, and an itemized breakdown of the loan minus any prepaid fees.6GovInfo. Refund Anticipation Loans (GAO-08-800R) The APR on a loan this short looks large because it’s annualized over weeks, so the dollar cost is the more useful number to compare against waiting.

If You’re Denied or Your Refund Falls Short

A denial doesn’t touch your tax return. Your return still gets filed and your refund still arrives on the IRS’s normal timeline, usually within 21 days of an accepted e-file with direct deposit.7Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season You just don’t get the early money.

If you’re approved but your refund ends up smaller than expected, Republic Bank treats the Easy Advance as a no-recourse loan. The bank won’t pursue you for the shortfall and won’t send you to collections.1Republic Bank. Easy Advance Shortfalls usually happen because the IRS adjusted your return or because the Bureau of the Fiscal Service offset your refund for outstanding debts.4Taxpayer Advocate Service. Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) Offsets for Non-Tax Debts The IRS notifies you when an offset happens and tells you which agency received the payment.

The no-recourse structure is part of why the bank is selective. It can’t chase you afterward, so it screens hard before approving.

Is It Worth It

If you can wait three weeks, waiting is cheaper. Every dollar of finance charge and every fee is money you’d keep by letting the IRS deposit your refund directly.

If your adjusted gross income is $89,000 or less, IRS Free File gives you tax preparation software at no cost.8Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available Combined with direct deposit, that route avoids preparation fees, Refund Transfer fees, and finance charges entirely. The tradeoff is standard IRS processing time.

If you genuinely need cash before the refund arrives, the Easy $100 Loan is the least expensive advance because it carries no finance charge. If a hundred dollars is enough to bridge the gap, that’s the option with the smallest bite out of your refund.
