Saturday is not a business day for banks. Federal rules define a business day as Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays, so anything you do on Saturday — a deposit, a transfer, a wire request — is generally treated as received on the following Monday. Your branch may be open for teller service, and your app will still accept transactions, but the networks that actually move money between institutions treat Saturday the same as Sunday.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
What Counts as a Business Day
Regulation CC, at 12 CFR Part 229, is the rule that controls when funds have to be available. It defines a business day as any calendar day other than Saturday, Sunday, or a federal holiday. The listed holidays are New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
The Friday cut-off matters too. A bank’s cut-off at a physical branch cannot legally be earlier than 2:00 p.m., and for ATMs or off-site locations no earlier than noon. Mobile deposit cut-offs are set by each bank and are not bound by that floor.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.19 – Miscellaneous3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens to a Saturday Deposit
When you deposit on Saturday, your bank records the transaction but does not start the availability clock until the next business day, which is Monday.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) From that Monday, Regulation CC’s availability schedule applies.
Certain checks must be available the next business day after the banking day of deposit: U.S. Treasury checks, U.S. Postal Service money orders, cashier’s checks, certified checks, and other government checks, if you deposit them in person into an account in your name. On-us checks (deposited at a branch of the bank they’re drawn on) qualify too, if both branches are in the same check-processing region.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability
For any other check, the bank must release the first $275 by the next business day, with the full amount typically available by the second business day after the banking day.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule So a $5,000 personal check deposited on Saturday has a banking day of Monday, $275 available Tuesday, and the balance available Wednesday.
Larger deposits can be held longer. If your check deposits on a single banking day exceed $6,725, the bank may hold the amount above that threshold for an additional five business days. Extended holds also apply when there’s reasonable doubt about collectibility, when a check has been returned before, or during emergency conditions.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Wires and ACH Transfers on Saturday
The Federal Reserve’s FedACH system, which handles direct deposits, bill payments, and most bank-to-bank transfers, runs only on business days. Standard ACH items settle at 8:30 a.m. ET on the next banking day, and same-day ACH is likewise limited to business days.7Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule8Nacha. Same Day ACH An ACH transfer you set up Friday night or any time Saturday waits in queue until Monday morning.
Wire transfers work the same way on the weekend. The Fedwire Funds Service, which handles real-time bank-to-bank wires, operates Monday through Friday and does not run on Saturday.9Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours A wire submitted through your bank’s online portal on Saturday will not settle until Monday. If your app shows the transfer as “pending” over the weekend, that only means your bank has recorded the request; the interbank movement has not begun.
The Saturday Exceptions: Real-Time Payment Networks
Two networks do run on Saturday, and both settle payments between banks in seconds.
The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service is a real-time gross settlement system that processes payments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no planned downtime. Participating banks are expected to make funds immediately available to customers at any hour, including weekends and Federal Reserve holidays. FedNow runs on a seven-day accounting model, so a Saturday transaction settles on Saturday rather than the following Monday. As of mid-2025, roughly 1,600 financial institutions had signed up, though not all have enabled the service for every transaction type.10Federal Reserve Banks. The Clearing House’s Real-Time Payments (RTP) network also operates 24/7/365, with instant, final settlement and support for payments up to $10 million.11The Clearing House. Real Time Payments
Whether you can actually use either network on a Saturday depends on your bank. Not every institution has adopted them, and those that have may restrict which transaction types are eligible. If weekend transfers matter to you, ask your bank whether it offers FedNow or RTP for the type of payment you need.
How Weekend Holidays Change the Timing
A federal holiday landing on Saturday does not add extra delay, because Saturday was never a business day to begin with. Federal Reserve Banks stay open the preceding Friday in that scenario, so Friday processing is unaffected.12Federal Reserve Financial Services. Holiday Schedules
A holiday on Sunday is the case that costs you a day. Under Regulation CC, the following Monday becomes a non-business day.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) If July 4 falls on Sunday, Monday July 5 is closed. A check deposited on Saturday July 3 has a banking day of Tuesday July 6, and the first $275 won’t be available until Wednesday July 7. The same effect happens every year with holidays that always fall on Monday — Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day — which push Saturday deposits to Tuesday.
The Overdraft Risk in the Saturday-to-Monday Gap
The lag between weekend activity and Monday processing is where fees show up. If you deposit on Saturday expecting the funds to cover a debit card purchase or auto-pay that clears over the weekend, you can get caught short. Banks generally post deposits before withdrawals during overnight processing, but no rule requires that order.13HelpWithMyBank.gov. Can the Bank Charge an Overdraft Fee While There Is a Deposit Pending?
A deposit made after Friday’s cut-off may not be credited until Monday. If a debit or automatic payment posts against your pre-deposit balance in the meantime, the bank can charge an overdraft or NSF fee even though the deposit is sitting in “pending.”13HelpWithMyBank.gov. Can the Bank Charge an Overdraft Fee While There Is a Deposit Pending? Depositing before the Friday cut-off, and keeping a buffer against known weekend debits, is the practical fix.
Coming Changes to Weekend Processing
The Federal Reserve has announced plans to expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service operations from five days a week to six, running Sunday through Friday and including weekday holidays. Saturday was deliberately left out because banks and the Reserve Banks use it for system maintenance, testing, and cybersecurity work.9Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours The change will not take effect before 2028 and will be phased in.14Federal Reserve Board. Once in place, Sunday wire settlement will be added to the current weekday schedule. Saturday will still be a non-processing day for Fedwire. ACH and check-clearing timelines under Regulation CC are separate rules, and updating them would take its own regulatory action.
