Is Klarna Bad for Your Credit Score and Report?

Using Klarna is not automatically bad for your credit score, but it can be. Klarna’s most popular product, Pay in 4, doesn’t get reported to the credit bureaus at all, so on-time use neither helps nor hurts your score.1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks The damage starts when you fall behind: unpaid balances can be sold to a collection agency, and a collection entry stays on your report for seven years no matter how small the original purchase.

Which Klarna Products Show Up on Your Credit Report

Klarna treats its products very differently at the bureaus, and that split is the whole story.

These products are invisible to your credit report:1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks

  • Pay in 4, the four interest-free installments spread over six weeks
  • Pay in 30, the full balance due within 30 days
  • Pay in full, one-time purchases with no installments
  • The Klarna Card, both the virtual and physical versions

None of the payments you make on those accounts land in your credit file. That means you get no credit-building benefit from paying them perfectly, and no boost to your payment history for years of clean use.

Klarna’s monthly financing product, Pay over time, is different. Klarna reports it to TransUnion and Experian, sharing whether you opened the account, whether you’re paying on time, and whether you’ve defaulted.1Klarna. Credit Score and Credit Checks On-time payments on that loan can build your payment history, which is 35% of a FICO score.2myFICO. What’s in Your Credit Score Late payments on it will hurt.

The credit check Klarna runs when you sign up is a soft inquiry across Pay in 4, Pay over time, and the Klarna Card application.3Klarna. Does Klarna Perform a Credit Check Soft pulls don’t affect your score and aren’t visible to other lenders, so applying doesn’t cost you the way opening a new credit card would. FICO reports that a single hard inquiry typically drops a score by fewer than five points.4myFICO. Do Credit Inquiries Lower Your FICO Score

So the asymmetry cuts against you on Pay in 4. You have a real obligation to pay, but the reward for paying is nothing. The bureaus only find out you existed if it goes badly wrong.

How a Missed Klarna Payment Turns Into Credit Damage

Miss a Pay in 4 installment and Klarna charges a late fee of up to $7. That fee doesn’t hit your credit report, but it adds to what you owe. A $100 purchase can grow to $121 after three missed installments, which pushes you closer to a default you might not have reached otherwise.

If you stop paying entirely, the account generally moves into default after 60 to 90 days. From there, Klarna can transfer or sell the debt to a third-party collection agency, and the collector can report the delinquency to the credit bureaus. That’s the point where a Klarna account starts showing up on your report, and it shows up as one of the worst possible entries.

A single collection can drop a score by 50 to 100 points or more, and the hit lands harder on clean reports than on already-damaged ones. Collections stay on your credit report for seven years from the date of the original missed payment, whether or not you eventually pay the balance.5TransUnion. How Long Do Collections Stay on Your Credit Report A $40 unpaid Klarna debt gets the same seven-year treatment as a $4,000 credit card default.

One overlooked risk before you even reach collections: Klarna pulls installments automatically from your linked debit card or bank account, and a low balance on payment day can trigger an overdraft or NSF fee at your bank on top of Klarna’s late fee.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You Have Protections When It Comes to Automatic Debit Payments From Your Account Two fees for the same missed dollar.

Can Klarna Hurt a Mortgage or Auto Loan Application?

Yes, even when your Klarna balances aren’t on your credit report. Lenders reviewing a mortgage or auto loan application look at your bank statements, and recurring Klarna withdrawals are visible there. Those payments get counted as debt obligations in your debt-to-income ratio.

Federal rules require mortgage lenders to verify you can repay before approving the loan, considering your income, existing debts, and other obligations.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Ability-to-Repay/Qualified Mortgage Rule There’s no single regulatory DTI cutoff across all mortgages, but many lenders set internal ceilings in the low-to-mid 40% range.8Federal Register. Qualified Mortgage Definition Under the Truth in Lending Act Regulation Z General QM Loan Definition Several active Klarna plans can eat meaningful room under that limit.

An underwriter reading your statements may also read a pattern of splitting routine purchases into installments as a sign of cash-flow stress, which can make them cautious even when the dollar amounts look modest. If a mortgage or auto loan is a few months out, clearing active Klarna balances first takes that question off the table.

Could On-Time Klarna Payments Ever Help Your Score?

Not with today’s standard FICO models. None of the three major credit bureaus feed buy now, pay later data into standard FICO calculations right now. Even when a bureau holds BNPL data, the current models ignore it.9myFICO. How Will a Buy Now Pay Later Account Impact My FICO Scores

FICO has built a newer model, FICO Score 10T, that uses trended data and is the first FICO score designed to incorporate buy now, pay later information. The model aggregates short-term loans so consumers aren’t penalized for having several small ones.10FICO Score. Innovation If lenders adopt it broadly, consistent on-time Klarna payments could eventually help. Adoption is slow, though. Most lenders are still using older FICO versions, and there’s no firm timeline for when 10T becomes the standard.

What to Do If You’re Already Behind

Klarna runs a financial hardship program for customers who can’t keep up. In the app or on the website, you can select an unpaid purchase, report a problem, and describe your situation, and Klarna will offer repayment plan options based on what you can afford.11Klarna. Financial Hardship Support Doing this before you miss a payment matters. Once the debt goes to collections, Klarna no longer controls what happens.

If a balance has already gone to a collector, you can contact the agency directly to negotiate. Many collectors will accept less than the full balance as a lump sum, especially on the small debts common with BNPL, where chasing the full amount isn’t worth their time. Get any settlement in writing before you pay. And know that paying a collection doesn’t erase it from your report: the entry updates to “paid,” which looks better to future lenders, but the account itself remains for the rest of the seven-year window.

If a collector contacts you about a Klarna debt you think is wrong, you have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The collector must send written notice, and you have 30 days to dispute the debt. They can’t report a disputed balance to the credit bureaus until they’ve verified it.12Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Examination Procedures
