How to Stop Earnin From Taking Money: Cancel, Block, and Revoke

To stop Earnin from taking money out of your bank account, cancel any pending cash out inside the app if it hasn’t started processing yet, then revoke your debit authorization by notifying both Earnin and your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled withdrawal. Federal law gives you the right to shut off these automatic debits regardless of what Earnin’s terms say, but the block only takes effect if you tell your bank in time.1GovInfo. 15 USC 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers

Cancel a Pending Cash Out in the App

If you haven’t received the money yet, open Earnin and look at the transfer’s status. Standard-speed transfers move through the ACH system over one to two business days, and you can cancel them as long as the status still reads “pending.” Once it flips to “processing,” the ACH file has already gone to your bank and the app can’t pull it back.2EarnIn Help Center. Lightning Speed transfers are a different story. They arrive within minutes and generally can’t be canceled at all. If you used Lightning Speed and the money has already landed, skip ahead to the sections on stopping the repayment debit.

Tell Your Bank to Stop the Debit

This is the step that actually works. Your bank, not Earnin, is the institution that releases the funds, so a stop payment order at the bank is what legally blocks the withdrawal. You can give the order by phone, in person, or in writing, and it must reach the bank at least three business days before the scheduled debit date.3eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

Three business days excludes weekends and federal holidays. If your payday is Monday, the bank needs to hear from you by the preceding Wednesday. Miss that window and the bank isn’t required to block that particular transfer, though you can still stop any that follow.

If you place the order by phone, your bank can require written confirmation within 14 days. The bank has to tell you about that requirement on the call and give you the address to send it to. Skip the follow-up and your oral order expires, meaning later debits can slip through.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

Stop One Transfer or Revoke All of Them

Be specific about what you want. If you only ask the bank to stop the next debit, that’s all it will block. If you tell the bank your authorization for Earnin debits is no longer valid, it must block every future debit from that originator, without waiting for Earnin to stop trying.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers For anyone who wants to be done with Earnin entirely, revoke the authorization rather than stopping a single payment.

Fees and How Long the Order Lasts

Most banks charge a fee for a stop payment order, so ask about the cost when you call.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A written stop payment order usually lasts six months and can be renewed for another six.6HelpWithMyBank.gov. How Can I Stop a Preauthorized Debit From Being Paid From My Checking Account? A full revocation of authorization should stay in effect without renewal, but confirm that in writing with your bank.

Notify Earnin You’re Revoking Authorization

Federal law only requires you to tell the bank, but telling Earnin creates a record and may keep the company from submitting new debit requests at all. Open the in-app support chat and state clearly that you are revoking authorization for all future debits. Include your name, the linked bank account number, and the date you originally signed up.

Save the chat transcript and any confirmation number the app produces. If Earnin offers an email address or a compliance contact, send the same notice there so you have a time-stamped copy. Your bank may ask to see this revocation notice when you place the stop payment order.

If a Debit Goes Through After You Revoked

A withdrawal that hits your account after you’ve revoked authorization is an unauthorized electronic fund transfer. You have 60 days from the date your bank sent the statement showing the charge to notify the bank of the error.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution Give your name and account number, identify the specific transaction, and explain that you had already revoked Earnin’s debit authorization.

If you gave your bank a valid stop payment order in time and the bank let the debit go through anyway, the bank is liable for the damages that resulted, including overdraft fees and other charges tied to the withdrawal.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693h – Liability of Financial Institutions If the bank won’t make you whole, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

What Happens to an Unpaid Balance

Cutting off the debits before Earnin recovers a cash out will lock you out of the app’s cash out services until the balance is paid. Beyond that, the consequences are limited. Earnin’s terms state that you have no legal obligation to repay an advance, and the company has warranted that it will not pursue debt collection, sell the balance to a third-party collector, or report the unpaid amount to credit bureaus.

The practical result is that not repaying costs you future access to Earnin, not a collections call or a credit-score hit. If you don’t plan to use the service again, the balance carries no further risk. Still, close the account formally so no one tries to debit you later.

Close the Account and Cut Off Data Access

Open Settings in the app, go to Account, and choose the option to deactivate or close your profile. Earnin requires your balance to be zero before it will let you close the account, so if you have an unpaid cash out, that closure option won’t be available until it’s settled.

Closing the account ends Earnin’s direct connection to your bank, but the data link created through Plaid or a similar aggregator may survive. Go to Plaid’s consumer portal to see which apps are connected to your bank accounts through Plaid and revoke Earnin’s access there. Your bank can also block third-party data connections if you ask. Keep the account closure confirmation from Earnin and any Plaid disconnection records with your other financial paperwork.
