How to See If a Check Has Been Cashed or Cleared

To see if a check has been cashed, sign in to your bank’s website or mobile app and look for the check in your recent transaction history. A check that has cleared will show as “posted” or “cleared,” meaning the money has left your account. If you don’t see it at all, the payee hasn’t deposited it yet. You can also call the number on the back of your debit card and ask a representative to confirm the status. Personal checks typically clear within about two business days of deposit, so if you wrote one recently, give it a little time before assuming something is wrong.

Have These Details Ready

Before you log in or call, pull together a few things. The check number in the upper-right corner of the check is the fastest way to locate a specific payment. You also want the exact dollar amount, the date you wrote the check, and the payee’s name. If you wrote more than one check to the same person recently, the check number and amount together will tell them apart.

Your check register, checkbook carbons, or a prior bank statement are the most reliable places to pull these details from. Having them ready before you start saves time and makes it easier to spot a problem, like the wrong amount posting or an altered check.

Look in Your Online or Mobile Banking

Open your checking account’s transaction history and search or filter by the check number. Three statuses matter:

  • Posted or cleared: the funds have left your account and reached the payee’s bank.
  • Pending: the check is in the process of clearing.
  • Not listed at all: the payee has not deposited it yet.

A personal check typically clears within two business days of the payee depositing it, and government checks, cashier’s checks, and checks drawn on the same bank as the deposit usually clear the next business day.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 4002 – Expedited Funds Availability Schedules So if you wrote a check two or three business days ago and nothing shows up, the payee most likely hasn’t deposited it.

View the Check Image

Most banks let you view and download a digital image of each processed check, front and back. Under the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, a digital substitute check that accurately represents the original is the legal equivalent of the paper check itself.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 5003 – General Provisions Governing Substitute Checks Look at the back of the image for the payee’s endorsement signature or a “for deposit only” stamp. That tells you who actually deposited it, which matters if a payee later claims they never received your payment.

Banks must keep records of checks over $100 for at least five years under Bank Secrecy Act rules.3FFIEC. Appendix P – BSA Record Retention Requirements Many keep images longer, but if you need proof of an older check, request it sooner rather than later. Some banks charge a small fee, often $3 to $5, to retrieve and mail a copy.

Call the Bank if You Prefer

Call the number on the back of your debit card or on your statement. After verifying your identity, a representative can confirm whether a specific check has cleared, when it posted, and the exact amount that was debited. This is especially useful when a check doesn’t show up in your online search, because a representative can see whether a hold or processing delay is involved. Most banks also have an automated phone system that lets you check on a specific check number using the keypad, which works outside business hours.

If the Check Hasn’t Cleared and You Want to Cancel It

If a check hasn’t been cashed and you want to stop it, whether because it was lost in the mail, sent to the wrong address, or the payment needs to be canceled, ask your bank for a stop payment order. This tells the bank to refuse the check if it’s presented for deposit. Most banks charge $30 to $35 and let you place the order by phone, online, or in person.

A stop payment order stays in effect for six months. If you place the order verbally, you have 14 calendar days to confirm it in writing or it expires, and you can renew it in six-month blocks before each expiration.4Cornell Law School. UCC 4-403 – Customers Right to Stop Payment – Burden of Proof of Loss

One thing to keep in mind: stopping payment doesn’t erase the debt the check was meant to cover. The payee can still come after you for the underlying amount. A stop payment only prevents that particular check from clearing.

Old Uncashed Checks

A bank isn’t required to honor a personal check presented more than six months after its date, but the bank is allowed to process a stale-dated check if it acts in good faith.5Cornell Law School. UCC 4-404 – Bank Not Obliged to Pay Check More Than Six Months Old So there’s no guarantee an old check will be rejected on age alone. If you wrote a check months ago and it never cleared, confirm the funds are still in your account and consider a stop payment if you want to be sure it can’t surface later.

Government Checks Are Tracked Differently

Government checks aren’t tracked through your own bank. For a federal tax refund, use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov. You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and exact refund amount.6Internal Revenue Service. Wheres My Refund If the tool shows the check was mailed but you never received it, you can start a refund trace through the same tool, by calling 800-829-1954, or by speaking with an IRS representative at 800-829-1040.

For other U.S. Treasury checks, such as Social Security, veterans’ benefits, or federal salary payments, contact the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 1-855-868-0151. They can identify which agency authorized the payment and confirm whether the check has been cashed.7USAGov. Government Checks and Payments If a government check was stolen and cashed by someone else, the Bureau will send you a claim package with a copy of the cashed check and instructions for requesting a replacement.

Cashier’s Checks, Money Orders, and Certified Checks

Tracking these works differently because the funds are guaranteed at purchase, either drawn from the bank’s own account or prepaid.

For a cashier’s check, keep the purchase receipt with the check’s serial number and contact the issuing bank’s customer service line or a branch to see whether the check has been presented for payment. Some banks offer online tracking; many require a call or written request.

For a USPS money order, you can submit an inquiry using PS Form 6401, available at any post office or online. The USPS inquiry fee is $21 and includes a copy of the cashed money order. For Western Union, MoneyGram, or other issuers, use the company’s website with the serial number on your receipt.8USPS. Notice 123 – Price List

A certified check is a personal check your bank has certified and set funds aside for, so track it by contacting the bank that certified it.

If a Check Cleared but Something Looks Wrong

If you pull up a check image and the endorsement doesn’t match the intended payee, or you suspect someone intercepted and forged the check, contact your bank right away. The bank will typically open a fraud claim and investigate whether the check was improperly endorsed or altered.

Timing matters. Under the Uniform Commercial Code, you have a duty to review your bank statements with reasonable promptness. If a forged or altered check is followed by more fraud on your account by the same person, failing to notify your bank within 30 days of getting the first statement containing the fraudulent item can shift liability for later fraudulent checks to you. In all cases, you lose the right to recover if you don’t report the problem within one year of the statement being made available. Many banks shorten these windows in their account agreements, so check yours for the specific reporting deadline.9Cornell Law School. UCC 3-404 – Impostors – Fictitious Payees

File a police report as well, and keep copies of all correspondence with the bank. If the bank confirms a forged endorsement, the loss generally falls on the bank that accepted the forged check for deposit rather than on you, as long as you reported the issue promptly.
