How to Run Your Credit: Free Reports and Disputing Errors

You can run your own credit report in about ten minutes at AnnualCreditReport.com, the only federally authorized source for free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. All three bureaus now let you pull your report once a week at no cost, so there’s no reason to pay a third-party site or wait for an annual window.1FTC. Free Credit Reports

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Each bureau matches your request to your file using the same core identifiers. Have these in front of you:

  • Your full legal name, including any suffix like Jr. or III
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your current mailing address, plus any previous address if you’ve moved in the past two years2Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Annual Credit Report Request Form

An online request also puts you through a short set of security questions drawn from your actual credit file. Expect things like the monthly payment amount on a specific loan or the name of a previous lender.3Federal Trade Commission. FTC Consumer Alert – Want a Free Annual Credit Report? Miss too many and the system will lock you out of the online path; you’ll have to mail in the request with copies of ID instead.

The Three Ways to Pull Your Report

Every route below goes through the same authorized service. Any other site claiming to give you your “official” free report is not it.1FTC. Free Credit Reports

Online

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and pick which bureau reports you want. You can pull all three at once or stagger them across the year so you’re seeing fresh data more often. How Often You Can Check for Free

Federal law entitles you to one free report from each bureau every 12 months.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures Since 2023, all three bureaus have permanently expanded that to one free report per week through AnnualCreditReport.com, and Equifax is offering six additional free reports per year through 2026 on top of that.1FTC. If you’re being charged, you’re on the wrong site.

Situations That Trigger Extra Free Reports

Separate from the weekly access, federal law guarantees a free report in specific circumstances:6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures

  • A lender, insurer, or employer denies you based on your credit report. You have 60 days from the denial notice to request a free copy from the bureau they used.
  • You’re unemployed and plan to apply for work within 60 days.
  • You receive public welfare benefits.
  • You have reason to believe your file contains inaccurate information due to fraud.

Contact the bureau directly and explain which situation applies.

What to Look for Once You Have the Report

Pulling the report is the easy part. The value is in the review, and the errors that cost you money tend to hide in the details.

Personal Information

Confirm your name, address, Social Security number, and employer are correct. A misspelled name or wrong address can mean another person’s accounts have been merged into your file, something the bureaus call a mixed file. It happens most often to people with common names.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Are Common Credit Report Errors That I Should Look for on My Credit Report

Account Details

For each account, check the balance, credit limit, payment status, and dates. Common errors include closed accounts still shown as open, accounts where you’re listed as the owner when you’re really just an authorized user, and the same debt reported more than once under slightly different names.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Inquiries

Your report lists every company that pulled your credit. Hard inquiries, tied to applications you initiated, can shave a few points off your score. Soft inquiries, like your own report pulls or promotional pre-screenings, have no effect. A hard inquiry from a lender you never applied to means someone else may be using your information.

How to Dispute an Error

You can dispute online, by phone, or by mail with each bureau that shows the error. Mail gives you the strongest paper trail. Your letter should include your contact information, an explanation of what’s wrong, the account number, and copies (never originals) of documents that back up your position.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Once the bureau has your dispute, it has 30 days to investigate, extending to 45 days if you send more supporting information during that window. Within five business days of receiving the dispute, the bureau also has to notify the company that reported the disputed item.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

If the investigation confirms the entry is wrong, or the reporting company can’t verify it, the bureau must delete or correct it and send you written results within five business days of finishing. You’ll get an updated report along with the notice.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy If the bureau decides the dispute is frivolous and won’t investigate, it has to tell you within five business days and say why.

You can also dispute directly with the company that furnished the information, meaning your bank, card issuer, or a collection agency. A direct dispute has to come with supporting documentation such as account statements, a police report, or a fraud affidavit.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Your Report Is Not Your Credit Score

People often use the terms interchangeably, but they aren’t the same. The report is the raw data: account histories, balances, payment records, inquiries. The score is a three-digit number a scoring company calculates from that data. Federal law does not require the bureaus to include a score with your free report.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681g – Disclosures to Consumers

Most major banks and card issuers now show a free FICO or VantageScore in their mobile app or on monthly statements. Checking your score that way is a soft inquiry and doesn’t affect the score itself.

If You Find Something Suspicious

Two tools protect a compromised file, and they work differently.

A credit freeze blocks anyone, including you, from opening new accounts in your name until you lift it. Placing and lifting a freeze is free under federal law, and you don’t need to be a fraud victim to use one.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts You have to contact each bureau separately; there is no single switch for all three.13USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report Online or phone requests are placed within one business day, mail requests within three. Temporary lifts requested online or by phone take effect within an hour.

A fraud alert is lighter. It doesn’t block your file but requires lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. An initial alert lasts one year, and you only need to contact one bureau; that bureau is required to notify the other two. If you’ve already filed an identity theft report through IdentityTheft.gov or with police, you can place an extended alert lasting seven years.14Consumer Advice (FTC). Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

A freeze gives stronger protection if you’re not actively applying for credit. A fraud alert is the more practical option if you suspect exposure but still need lenders to be able to reach your file.
