What to Gather Before You Start

Pull these together first. The form will not go anywhere without them.

  • The 11-digit serial number from the top of the money order or from your purchase receipt.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. The name on your refund request must match your ID exactly, because you will show that same ID at pickup.
  • Purchase details: the date, dollar amount, store name, and the city, state, and country where you bought it.
  • Proof of purchase: a scan or photo of the receipt portion with the barcode, or of the money order itself.

Western Union uses this information to confirm the money order has not already been cashed. Only uncashed money orders qualify for a refund.1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

Submitting the Refund Request

The request runs through the Money Order Request Form at westernunion.com in three steps:1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

  • Enter the 11-digit serial number and the dollar amount, then click Check Status. This tells you whether the money order is eligible.
  • Fill in the purchase details, your reason for the refund, the payee name, your contact information, and your mailing address. Upload your proof of purchase.
  • Review, agree to the terms, and submit. A confirmation email follows, and status updates go to the same email address.

How Much the Fee Will Be

A non-refundable processing fee comes out of the refund. It is tiered to the face value of the money order:1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

  • $5 or less: no fee.
  • Above $5 but under $100: $5.
  • $100 or more: $15.

Other deductions can apply depending on the status of the money order. In particular, a money order that has been sitting unused for a long time may already have had non-use service charges taken out of the principal, which lowers what is available to refund.1Western Union. Money Order Request Form Pickup is in person at a Western Union agent location, and you must bring the same government-issued photo ID you listed on the form. If the Money Order Has Sat Unused for a Long Time

Western Union money orders do not expire. Depending on the state where you bought it, though, a non-refundable service charge may be deducted from the principal once the money order goes unused for one to three years after the purchase date.2Western Union. If it stays uncashed long enough, the remaining balance can eventually be turned over to the state as unclaimed property under escheatment rules. Dormancy periods vary by state, typically two to seven years, with three or five years most common. Once funds are escheated, the claim goes to the state’s unclaimed property office rather than to Western Union.

If the Money Order Was Stolen

The online refund process only covers money orders that have not been cashed. If a stolen money order has already been cashed by someone unauthorized, a standard refund is generally not available,1Western Union.
