To refund a money order, file an inquiry or research request with the issuer that sold it — USPS, Western Union, or MoneyGram — submit your purchase receipt, pay a processing fee, and wait while the issuer confirms the money order has not already been cashed. Depending on the issuer and whether the money order is uncashed, lost, or stolen, you’ll get an answer in anywhere from about a week to 60 days.
What You Need Before You File
The purchase receipt is the one item you cannot really do without. It carries the serial number, the dollar amount, and the location where you bought the money order, and the issuer uses those details to find your record in its system.1USPS. Money Orders – The Basics USPS serial numbers are 10 digits; Western Union’s are 11.2Western Union. Money Order Research Request Form Copy the number carefully. A wrong digit can get your claim rejected and your fee kept.
If you still have the physical money order — say you changed your mind about sending it — bring it. That lets the issuer cancel and refund it directly instead of opening a longer investigation. If the money order is gone, the receipt alone is enough to start the process.
Each issuer has its own form:
- USPS uses PS Form 6401, the Money Order Inquiry, available at any post office.3USPS. PS Form 6401 – Money Order Inquiry
- Western Union uses its Money Order Research Request form, a PDF you download from the company’s site.2Western Union. Money Order Research Request Form

Don’t Go Back to the Store

If the Money Order Was Already Cashed
If the investigation shows someone already cashed the money order, the refund is denied. You can still ask the issuer for a photocopy of the cashed money order, which shows the endorsement signature.1USPS. Money Orders – The Basics For USPS money orders, that photocopy is only available for two years from the date the money order was cashed, so file the inquiry sooner rather than later.
If the signature isn’t the intended payee’s, that’s evidence of fraud or theft. Use the photocopy to file a police report or pursue the matter further. For USPS money orders, report suspected fraud to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.1USPS. Money Orders – The Basics

The investigation timeline is the same. If the money order hasn’t been cashed, you get a refund or replacement. If it was cashed with a forged signature, the photocopy plus the police report give you a basis for recovering the money through law enforcement or civil action.
