If you wrote the wrong name, the wrong amount, or another error on a money order, you cannot fix it on the document itself. Crossing out, writing over, or using correction fluid will make the money order look altered, and banks will refuse to cash it. The way to fix a mistake on a money order is to cancel it with the issuer, pay a processing fee, and either take the refund or use it to buy a new one.
Why You Cannot Just Cross It Out
Any visible change to a money order signals possible tampering. Under the Uniform Commercial Code, a fraudulent alteration to a negotiable instrument discharges the obligation of the party whose terms were changed.1Cornell Law Institute. Uniform Commercial Code 3-407 – Alteration In practice, a teller who sees overwriting or white-out will decline to cash it, even when the correction was innocent. Once it looks altered, it is no longer negotiable.
That leaves one reliable path: cancel the original, get your money back from the issuer, and start over with a clean money order.
Which Mistakes Actually Need a New Money Order
Not every field matters equally.
- Wrong payee name. Banks match the name on the money order against the recipient’s photo ID, so even a misspelling can get it rejected. You almost always need a new one.
- Incorrect dollar amount. The printed amount cannot be changed. Cancel and reissue.
- Your own name or address in the purchaser field. This is less likely to stop the recipient from cashing it, since that information is mainly for the issuer’s records. But if you later need to file a claim, a wrong address on your side can slow the correspondence.
When you are not sure, cancel. A few dollars in fees is cheaper than a rejected payment.
What to Gather Before You Contact the Issuer
Pull these together first:
- The original purchase receipt or stub, which carries the serial number, dollar amount, and date the issuer needs to find your transaction.
- The money order itself, if you still have it. Some issuers and retail locations can process the refund faster when they can see the physical document.
- A separate check or money order for the processing fee. Some issuers deduct the fee from your refund instead.

How Long the Refund Takes
Turnaround varies by issuer:
- USPS: 60 days or later from the money order’s original issue date. The refund check is mailed to the address on your form.4USPS. PS Form 6401 – Money Order Inquiry
- Western Union: approved refunds within five business days, picked up in person at an agent.6Western Union. Money Order Refund Request
- MoneyGram: usually within 15 days of receipt.
If you are mailing your paperwork, send it certified. That gives you a tracking number and delivery confirmation in case the issuer says nothing arrived.
If Someone Already Cashed It
If the issuer finds that the money order has already been redeemed, no refund is issued. You will instead get a photocopy showing the endorsement on the back, so you can see who signed for the funds. That is a different problem from a writing mistake, and it moves into fraud territory rather than a cancellation. If the signature looks forged, contact the issuer’s fraud department and consider filing a police report to create an official record.
