To find your HSA account number, check the welcome kit your custodian mailed when the account opened, look at a paper or PDF statement, sign in to your provider’s online portal or mobile app, or call the customer service number on the back of your HSA debit card. The 16-digit number embossed on the debit card itself is not your account number; it only works for point-of-sale purchases. You’ll want the real account number any time you set up contributions from an outside bank, file taxes, or transfer funds to another custodian.
Start With Your Paperwork
The welcome packet from your HSA custodian usually includes an enrollment confirmation or signature card printed with the full account number. If that packet is long gone, any monthly or quarterly paper statement will do. The number typically sits in the top-right header or inside the account summary box near the opening balance.
Tax forms are another dependable source. IRS Form 1099-SA (distributions) and Form 5498-SA (contributions) both carry an “Account number” field your custodian fills in to identify your account.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-SA and 5498-SA (12/2026)2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-SA – Distributions From an HSA, Archer MSA, or Medicare Advantage MSA
One caveat. Many statements and tax forms mask the number for security and only show the last four digits. If that’s what you’re staring at, the redacted document won’t get you the full number. Fall back to the original enrollment paperwork or one of the methods below.
Log In to the Online Portal or App
Signing in to your HSA provider’s website or mobile app is usually the quickest route. After you log in, look for a section called “Account Summary,” “Account Details,” or “Profile.” The full number is typically there, just hidden behind an eye icon or a “Show” button next to the partially visible digits. Tap it and the complete number appears.
Most providers ask for multi-factor authentication before they’ll display the full number, so keep your phone within reach for a text code or authenticator prompt. If you haven’t set up MFA yet, the login flow will walk you through it.
If the portal doesn’t display the full number on screen, download a PDF of your most recent electronic statement. These digital statements usually mirror what would arrive in the mail and often show the unredacted account number. Saving the PDF locally also gives you a record for later.
Call the Number on the Back of Your Debit Card
When paperwork and the portal both fail you, phone support works. The customer service number is printed on the back of your HSA debit card and posted on your provider’s website. Federal banking rules require the institution to verify it’s actually you before sharing account details.3eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks
Have your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and the mailing address on file ready. Once the agent verifies you, they can read the account number aloud or send it through a secure message inside the portal. If you’ve moved or changed your name recently and haven’t updated the account, keep your old information handy so verification doesn’t stall.
Not Sure Which Company Even Holds Your HSA?
You can’t retrieve an account number if you don’t know which institution manages the account. This trips people up more often than it should, especially when an employer switches custodians or when the account was opened during a benefits enrollment years ago.
Check a Pay Stub or Your W-2
A recent pay stub is the fastest clue. HSA contributions show up in the pre-tax deductions section, and the line item usually names the custodian. If nothing on the stub identifies them, your most recent W-2 confirms you have an HSA: employer contributions and your own pre-tax payroll contributions made through a cafeteria plan appear in Box 12 with code “W.”4Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 The W-2 doesn’t name the custodian, but it tells you an HSA exists and gives you something concrete to ask HR about.
Ask HR or Check the Benefits Portal
Companies that use benefits administration platforms typically list the HSA custodian on your health plan election page. If the digital records aren’t clear, your HR or benefits team keeps records of which institution runs the company’s HSA program. A single email usually gets you the custodian’s name, website, and phone number.
Grab the Routing Number While You’re At It
If the reason you’re hunting for the account number is to set up direct deposits, contribute from an outside bank, or start a transfer, you also need the routing number. The routing number identifies the financial institution; the account number identifies your specific account inside it. Electronic money movement needs both.
The routing number lives in the same places as the account number: your portal’s account details page, paper statements, and the welcome kit. One thing to watch for. Some HSA custodians use a routing number that differs from the routing number on their general banking website, so don’t assume the number you find on the parent bank’s homepage is the right one for your HSA. Pull it from the HSA portal directly, or ask the HSA-specific customer service line.
If You’ve Left the Employer That Set Up the HSA
Your HSA balance belongs to you, including any employer contributions, whether you quit, get laid off, or retire. Federal law makes your interest in the balance nonforfeitable.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 223 – Health Savings Accounts Losing access to a former employer’s benefits portal doesn’t wipe out the account or its number.
A couple of things do change once you’re off the payroll. Your employer may have been paying monthly maintenance or paper statement fees on your behalf, and the custodian can start billing those directly to your account after you leave.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
