How to Cash Out Your Self Account Early: Payout, Credit, Taxes

To cash out your Self Credit Builder Account early, close it through the Self app, the website, or by phone, and you’ll be sent whatever you’ve paid in so far minus interest, the administrative fee, any late or returned payment fees, and — if you have one — the security deposit tied to your Self Visa Credit Card. The closure processes within 24 hours and can’t be undone.

What You Get Back

Your payout is the sum of every monthly payment you’ve made, less interest charges, a one-time administrative fee (typically $9), and any late or returned payment fees. If a Self Visa Credit Card is linked to the account, its security deposit comes out of the payout too.1Self Financial. How Much Will My Payout Be for My Credit Builder Account?

A concrete example: on the $48-per-month plan, about 12 months in you’d have paid $585 total. Subtract $37 in interest and a $300 Visa security deposit and the payout is $239. Without the credit card, that same borrower gets back closer to $539. The earlier you close, the less you’ve paid in and the smaller the raw dollar amount returned. You also stop paying interest sooner, which is part of the point.

You don’t have to estimate. Log into the app or website and your account overview shows the exact payout figure, updated after each payment with all deductions applied. Check it before you close.

What Early Closure Does to Your Credit

This is the tradeoff most people underestimate. Every monthly payment Self reports to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion adds to your payment history, which is roughly 35% of your credit score.6Self Inc. Closing an installment loan can also thin out your credit mix, which is about 10% of your score. If the Self account was the only installment loan on your file, closing it removes that category.

Accounts closed in good standing don’t disappear from your credit report. Positive account information can remain for longer than seven years after closure.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If You Stop Paying Instead

Voluntary closure and closure for nonpayment are not the same thing. Self automatically shuts down accounts after 80 days of nonpayment to keep them from hitting 90 days past due on your credit report, which would cause significantly more damage.8Self Financial. The Tax Piece

While your Credit Builder Account is active, the funds sit in a Certificate of Deposit that earns a small amount of interest, and that interest is taxable. If it reaches $10 or more, the partner bank holding the CD sends you a Form 1099-INT. Even if the amount falls below $10 and no 1099-INT arrives, you’re still required to report all taxable interest on your federal return.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received On most Self plans the amounts are small enough not to move your tax bill much, but it’s worth knowing so a form in January doesn’t surprise you.
