You can cash a check when the bank is closed using one of four routes: your bank’s ATM, your bank’s mobile deposit app, a check-cashing app like Ingo Money, or a walk-in location such as a 24-hour retailer, grocery store customer service desk, or dedicated check-cashing store. Each option accepts checks outside standard banking hours, and the Federal Reserve observes 11 federal holidays a year on top of weekends, so evening and weekend gaps are common.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Federal Reserve System Holiday Schedule The right choice depends on whether you need cash in hand tonight or can wait for a deposit to clear, and on how much fee you’re willing to pay.
What to Have Ready Before You Go
Every option requires valid government-issued photo ID. A state driver’s license, U.S. passport, or military ID works almost anywhere, and federal anti-money-laundering rules require any institution handling your check to verify who you are.2eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks First-time customers at some retailers are also asked for a Social Security number and address to set up an account in the store’s system.
Wait until you’re at the counter or ATM to sign the endorsement line on the back. An endorsed check that falls out of your pocket is effectively cash to whoever finds it. Check the date on the front too. Banks aren’t required to honor a check presented more than six months after it was written,3Cornell Law School. Uniform Commercial Code 4-404 – Bank Not Obliged to Pay Check More Than Six Months Old and some business checks are printed “void after 90 days,” which shortens the window further.
Depositing at Your Bank’s ATM
If you have a debit card, your bank’s ATMs run around the clock. Insert the card, enter your PIN, and choose the deposit option. Most modern machines use imaging technology to read the check amount, so no envelope is needed. The ATM scans both sides, confirms the amount on screen, and prints a receipt.
The catch is that an ATM deposit isn’t cash in hand. Your bank credits the account, but federal rules control how quickly you can actually spend it. The first $275 of a non-next-day check becomes available the next business day,4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability and the rest follows the hold schedule below. A deposit made Saturday night doesn’t hit “next business day” until Monday. Some banks also cap daily ATM deposit counts and totals.
Using Your Bank’s Mobile Deposit App
Nearly every bank and credit union offers mobile deposit through its app. You endorse the check, open the app, photograph the front and back, confirm the amount, and submit. It works at any hour from anywhere with a signal.
Availability follows the same federal rules as ATM deposits. Mobile deposits that don’t qualify for next-day treatment can take up to two business days for local checks and five business days for nonlocal checks to clear.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule Mobile deposit limits are often lower than ATM or teller limits, and if the account is new or has a history of returned deposits, expect tighter caps.
Check Cashing Apps If You Don’t Have a Bank Account
A traditional bank account isn’t required to cash a check on your phone. Apps like Ingo Money let you photograph a check and load the funds onto a prepaid debit card, PayPal account, or bank account. Ingo charges a flat $5 for payroll and government checks up to $250, and 2% on larger amounts if you want the money in minutes.6Ingo Money App. Ingo Money App Benefits and Fees Personal checks and money orders cost more: $5 for checks up to $100, or 5% above that.
If you’re not in a rush, Ingo has a no-fee option that releases funds after 10 days, assuming the check clears. PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App offer similar check deposit features with their own fee structures. These services work best on smaller checks, where convenience outweighs the percentage cost.
Retailers and Grocery Store Customer Service Desks
Major retail and grocery chains cash checks at their customer service desks during store hours, and many stay open late or 24 hours. You hand over the check and ID, the clerk runs the routing and account information through a verification system, and you leave with cash minus a service fee.
Fees at retailers tend to be lower than at dedicated check-cashing stores. Flat fees between $3 and $8 are common for standard payroll and government checks. Kroger accepts checks up to $5,000,7Kroger. Money Services Frequently Asked Questions and large retailers generally cap check amounts between $5,000 and $7,500, with some raising limits during tax season for refund checks. Keep the transaction receipt.
One important limit: most retailers won’t cash personal checks written by individuals. They accept pre-printed payroll checks, government checks, tax refunds, and cashier’s checks. For a handwritten personal check from a friend or private party, you’ll need somewhere else.
Dedicated 24-Hour Check Cashing Stores
Storefront check cashers exist specifically for this purpose, and many operate 24 hours a day. They accept a wider range of check types than retailers, including personal checks in many cases. The trade-off is cost. Fees commonly run 2% to 5% of the face value for payroll and government checks and can exceed 10% for personal checks. On a $1,000 payroll check, that’s $20 to $50 versus $4 to $8 at a grocery store.
Verification tends to be more thorough. Tellers run the check through electronic databases to confirm the issuing account has funds and that the check hasn’t already been cashed, and some contact the issuing bank directly. Once verified, you sign a payout slip and receive cash along with a summary showing the gross amount and net payout.
When Deposited Funds Actually Become Spendable
Depositing a check isn’t the same as being able to spend the money. Federal rules govern the hold period regardless of whether you used an ATM, an app, or a teller.
Some check types clear by the next business day when deposited in person: U.S. Treasury checks, postal money orders, cashier’s checks, and government checks.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability For ordinary checks, the first $275 still becomes available the next business day.8Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance After that:
- Local checks: full funds by the second business day after deposit.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule
- Nonlocal checks: full funds by the fifth business day after deposit.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule
Banks can extend those holds. Deposits totaling more than $6,725 in a single day, deposits into accounts less than 30 days old, and checks into accounts with a history of overdrafts all trigger exception holds.9eCFR. 12 CFR 229.13 – Exceptions Under an exception, the bank can add up to five extra business days for local checks and six extra for nonlocal. A large check dropped in an ATM on Friday night at a new account can easily take more than a week to fully clear.
What Happens If the Check Bounces
After-hours cashing has a real downside worth thinking about. If a retailer or check-cashing store hands you cash and the check later bounces, they come after you for the full face value plus fees. If you deposited the check and spent the money before it cleared, the bank reverses the deposit and charges a returned-item fee.10HelpWithMyBank.gov. Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) Fees
Your recourse is against the person who wrote the check, not the bank or store, and pursuing that is on you. Unpaid balances can be sent to collections and damage your credit. Payroll checks from established employers and government checks carry almost no bounce risk, which is why retailers and check cashers charge less for them.
Signing a Check Over to Someone Else
If you can’t reach any cashing location, you may be able to sign the check over. Endorse the back, write “Pay to the order of” followed by the other person’s full name, and let them endorse below your signature and take it in. Banks and retailers aren’t required to accept third-party checks, and many refuse because of fraud risk. Places that do accept them often require both people present with ID. Call ahead before anyone makes the trip.
A Note on Checks Over $10,000
Cashing a check for more than $10,000, or multiple checks totaling more than $10,000 in one day, triggers a Currency Transaction Report to the federal government.11FinCEN. Notice to Customers – A CTR Reference Guide This applies to banks, retailers, and check-cashing stores, since check cashers are classified as money services businesses under federal anti-money-laundering law.12FFIEC. BSA/AML General Definitions The report captures your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and ID details. There is nothing illegal about a large check, and the filing is routine. Splitting a large check into smaller transactions to stay under the threshold is a federal crime called structuring, regardless of where the money came from. Cash the check normally and let the paperwork happen.
