To cancel your Self Credit Builder Account, call Self’s automated phone line at 877-883-0999, choose option 1, verify your identity, and then choose option 4 to close the account. Closure usually completes within 24 hours and cannot be reversed once you start it. Your payout — the total you paid in, minus loan interest, any fees, and any amount used to fund a Self Visa® security deposit — typically arrives within about three weeks.1Self Financial. How Do I Cancel My Credit Builder Account
The Cancellation Steps
Self does not let you close the Credit Builder Account through the app or the website. The phone line is the only route. Here is what to expect on the call:
- Dial 877-883-0999 and press option 1.
- If you are calling from a number Self does not have on file, verify your identity when prompted.
- Confirm your account details.
- Press option 4 to close the account.
- Follow the remaining prompts, which cover your payout and how the closure will be reported to the credit bureaus.
Any payment you have already scheduled or submitted, including administration fees, will still process. Self does not reverse those.1Self Financial. How Do I Cancel My Credit Builder Account Before you call, make sure your linked bank account and mailing address are current, because the closure moves quickly and outdated details will slow your payout.
The Early Withdrawal Fee
If you close before your loan term ends, Self charges an early withdrawal fee of less than $1, with the exact amount depending on the size of your account. The fee comes out of your payout rather than being billed separately.2Self Financial. Is There a Fee for Closing My Account Early
What You Get Back
The payout is not the sum of your monthly payments. Self runs a straightforward calculation before releasing your money:3Self Inc. Everything You Need to Know About Your Self Credit Builder Account Payout
- Start with your total payments over the life of the loan.
- Subtract the loan interest. The interest portion of each monthly payment is the cost of borrowing and never went into your savings.
- Subtract any amount that funded a Self Visa® security deposit, if you used the account that way.
- Subtract any fees you owe: return payment fees, late fees, and the early withdrawal fee if it applies.
What remains is your payout. As a rough example, paying $35 a month for 24 months adds up to $840, and at a 15.69% APR the finance charges alone come to about $123, so the check would be meaningfully smaller than $840. Your numbers depend on the plan you chose and how long the account was open.
How and When the Payout Arrives
Plan on up to three weeks for the money to reach you after closure. Self uses one of three delivery methods:3Self Inc. Everything You Need to Know About Your Self Credit Builder Account Payout
- Direct deposit to the bank account linked to your Self profile. This is usually the fastest option, but only if your routing and account numbers are current.
- Debit card deposit, if you qualify for an instant payout. That option appears in the Build tab of the app after closure. Funds can arrive the same day, though processing can still stretch to three weeks.
- Paper check, mailed to the address on file. This is the default when Self does not have working bank or debit card details for you.
Link a bank account before you cancel if you want the money to reach you quickly. A missing or wrong account number sends you to the paper-check track by default.
If You Also Have the Self Visa Credit Card
Closing the Credit Builder Account does not close the Self Visa® Credit Card, and closing the card does not close the Credit Builder Account. The card is a separate cancellation: call 877-883-0999 or use the in-app chat to reach an agent.4Self Financial. How Do I Cancel or Close My Self Visa Credit Card Account Once closed, that specific card account cannot be reopened.
Your security deposit is handled based on the order in which you close things. If your Credit Builder Account is still open when you close the card, the remaining deposit rolls back into that account. If the Credit Builder Account is already closed, Self returns the leftover deposit by check or direct deposit within 10 to 14 business days.5Self Financial. What Cancellation Does to Your Credit
Closing either product can knock your score down for a stretch, even with a perfect payment record. The size of the effect depends on the rest of your credit file.
Closing the Self Visa® reduces your total available credit, which raises your utilization ratio across your remaining cards. That matters more if the Self card is your only card or if your other cards are carrying balances.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Does It Hurt My Credit to Close a Credit Card
Closing the Credit Builder Account pays off an installment loan. If it was your only installment loan, your credit mix — about 10% of a FICO score — narrows. Thin-file borrowers, who are the typical Self user, tend to see the dip fade within a few months.
The positive payment history you built does not vanish when the account closes. Closed accounts in good standing stay on your credit report for up to ten years and continue to help your score over that period. Self simply stops adding new monthly entries after closure.
Check Your Credit Report Afterward
Once Self reports the closure, look at your reports from the three bureaus and confirm the account shows as closed or paid in full. Common errors are an account still marked open, a balance that is not zero, or a missed-payment mark that should not be there.
If something is wrong, dispute it with the bureau reporting it. Under federal law, the bureau has 30 days from receiving your dispute to investigate and five business days after finishing to notify you of the result.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy You can file online with each bureau or by mail.
