One clarification worth making up front: money orders use an 11-digit serial number, not a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). The MTCN belongs to wire transfers and won’t work on a money order refund request.

What You Need to File

Whether you file online or by mail, gather the same details before you start:

  • The payee name from the “Pay to” line.
  • The purchase date and the dollar amount.
  • The store name and location where you bought it.

How Much the Fee Will Be

  • $5 or less: no fee.
  • Above $5 but under $100: $5.
  • $100 or more: $15.

On an online submission, the fee is deducted from the face value before the refund is issued, so you pay nothing out of pocket. Cancel a $200 money order and you receive $185. If the Money Order Has Already Been Cashed

Once the money order is cashed or deposited, Western Union will not refund it. What you can do is request a photocopy of the cashed money order, front and back, to see who endorsed it and where. That’s useful if you suspect it was stolen or cashed by the wrong person.

Don’t Sit on an Unused Money Order

Western Union money orders don’t expire, but the balance can shrink.
