You can cancel a dispute on Experian three ways: through the online Dispute Center at experian.com, by calling Experian’s consumer assistance line at 1-866-617-1894, or by mailing a written withdrawal request to Experian’s Allen, Texas address. Once the withdrawal is processed, the disputed item stays on your credit report as it was, and the “account in dispute” notation is removed.1Experian. Dispute Credit Report Information
People usually pull a dispute for one of a few reasons: they’ve decided the reported information was accurate after all, they want to work directly with the creditor instead, or a lender has told them the dispute flag needs to come off before a mortgage or other loan can close. An active dispute notation on a tradeline can slow mortgage underwriting, so clearing it before you apply is common.2Fannie Mae. DU Credit Report Analysis
What to Have Ready
Whichever method you use, pull these together first:
- Your dispute confirmation number. Experian issues one when the investigation opens; check the confirmation email or letter, or sign in to your Experian account and look under dispute status.
- Personal identifiers: full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current mailing address.
- The specific item you want to stop disputing, including the creditor name and account number if you have it.
Logging in before you start lets you see every open dispute in one place so you withdraw the right one.

Give the representative your identifiers and the confirmation number, confirm which dispute you’re pulling, and ask for a verbal reference number for the withdrawal before you hang up. That gives you something to point to if the cancellation doesn’t show up on your file later.

What Changes on Your Report
After Experian processes the withdrawal, the investigation stops and the tradeline stays exactly as it was before you disputed it. The “account in dispute” flag comes off, so lenders reviewing the file see a clean status. Experian sends a confirmation by email or mail, depending on how your account is set up. Online and phone withdrawals typically reflect within a few business days; mailed requests take longer.
Canceling a dispute does not affect your credit score by itself. Filing one and withdrawing it are neutral events for scoring models. If the investigation had already corrected something before you pulled the dispute, that correction stays.
Can You Dispute the Same Item Later?
Yes, but with a catch. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires a bureau to investigate a dispute over incomplete or inaccurate information unless it deems the dispute frivolous. If you re-file the same dispute on the same basis without adding new information, Experian can classify it as frivolous and terminate the investigation within five business days of that determination.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy
The same rule applies if you take the dispute directly to the creditor instead. A furnisher can refuse to investigate a direct dispute that is substantially the same as an earlier one unless you provide information you didn’t submit before.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 1022.43 Direct Disputes
If you expect to re-file, gather new documentation first: bank statements, payment receipts, letters from the creditor, anything that goes beyond what you sent the first time. New evidence makes a frivolous finding far less likely and gives the second dispute a real chance of producing a correction.
