How Long Is the SIE Good For and When Does It Expire?

A passing score on the Securities Industry Essentials exam is good for four years from the date you take it. Within that window you need to associate with a FINRA member firm and pass a top-off qualification exam, such as the Series 7 or Series 6, to complete your registration. Miss the four-year deadline and the credit expires, with no grace period and no partial extension.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity

How the Four-Year Clock Works

The clock starts the day you pass the SIE and runs for exactly four years. You do not need to be employed at a brokerage or any other financial firm during that time to keep the credit alive. Anyone 18 or older can sit for the SIE independently, and the result holds regardless of employment status.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam

The rule is uniform. Whether you take time to finish school, work in another field, or simply delay your job search, the credit persists until the fourth anniversary of your exam date and then expires.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity

What You Have to Do Within Those Four Years

Passing the SIE on its own does not let you conduct securities transactions or give investment advice. To become registered you must associate with a FINRA member firm and pass a top-off qualification exam matched to your job function.2FINRA. Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam

Association happens when a firm files a Form U4 on your behalf, which links your exam results to that firm in FINRA’s Central Registration Depository. You have to be associated with a firm before you can even sit for a top-off exam, because qualification exams require firm sponsorship. The SIE is the exception; it does not.2FINRA. The four-year clock keeps running while you look for a firm. If it reaches zero without an approved registration in an appropriate category, the SIE credit is forfeited and you have to retake the exam.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity

How the SIE Window Lines Up With Other Exams

The SIE’s four years is longer than the window on the exams you’ll pair it with, so timing matters. Representative-level and principal-level qualification exams (like the Series 7 or Series 6) are valid for only two years from the date you pass them if you haven’t yet obtained an approved registration. Both exams must be valid at the time your registration is approved. If your top-off is current but your SIE has expired, registration cannot be finalized.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity

State law exams sit on a separate timeline. Most registered representatives also need to pass a NASAA exam such as the Series 63, 65, or 66. An initial passing score on a NASAA exam is valid for two years, and once you register with a state, the exam stays valid as long as you remain registered.3NORTH AMERICAN SECURITIES ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATION. EVEP FAQs The practical takeaway: coordinate all three so the shortest window doesn’t close on you.

If You Register and Then Leave the Industry

The rules change once you’ve been registered. When your firm files a Form U5 to end your registration, your SIE credit remains valid for four years from the termination date rather than from your original exam date. Leaving the industry effectively resets the SIE clock.1FINRA. Exam Credit and Exam Validity

Representative-level qualifications are less forgiving. A Series 7 or similar exam lapses just two years after the termination date on your Form U5.4FINRA. Formerly Registered Reps Someone who steps away for three years still has a valid SIE but has to retake the top-off exam to come back.

FINRA’s Maintaining Qualifications Program lets formerly registered individuals preserve representative- or principal-level qualifications for up to five years after leaving, through annual continuing education and a $100 annual fee, provided they enroll within two years of termination and had held the registration for at least a year beforehand. One boundary worth naming: the SIE by itself cannot be maintained through the MQP. If you passed only the SIE and never completed a top-off exam, the program isn’t available to you, and the four-year rule is your only clock.5FINRA.org. The Maintaining Qualifications Program (MQP)

If the SIE Expires

Once the four-year window closes, the only way forward is to sit the exam again. The SIE fee is $100 as of 2026.6FINRA. If you fail a retake, you have to wait 30 days before another attempt. After three consecutive failures, the wait extends to 180 days.7FINRA. Prepare for Your Test Center Appointment

Waivers in Limited Cases

There is no automatic extension for an expired SIE, but FINRA can grant exam waivers in specific situations. A firm can request one on your behalf based on prior securities industry experience, work in a related investment field such as portfolio management or investment advisory services, or employment at a securities regulatory agency. FINRA reviews each request individually, weighing the length and quality of your experience, your registration history, and your disciplinary record.8FINRA.org. Qualification Exam Waivers and Exemptions

An SIE waiver cannot be requested on its own; it has to be paired with a representative-level exam waiver. Grants are typically conditional: you must pass the applicable qualification exam within 90 days and within two attempts. Fail both, and the waiver is revoked, leaving you to pass the SIE and the qualification exam on your own.8FINRA.org. Qualification Exam Waivers and Exemptions
