How Long Does Payment Processing Take? ACH, Wires, and Cards

How long payment processing takes depends entirely on the rail the money travels on: real-time networks move funds in seconds, card and ACH transactions typically settle in one to three business days, domestic wires clear the same day, and international wires or held checks can take up to five business days or longer. The screen may say “sent” the moment you tap, but authorization, clearing, and settlement are separate steps, and each carries its own clock.

Credit and Debit Card Timing

Card payments feel instant because authorization is instant. When you swipe, tap, or enter your card, the issuing bank sends back a code confirming available funds or credit and places a temporary hold on your balance. No money has moved yet.

Later the same day, the merchant’s processor batches the day’s authorized transactions and submits them for settlement. Funds then move from your bank to the merchant’s account, which generally takes one to three business days. Your bank uses that window to run fraud checks before releasing the money.

Why Debit Holds Can Cause Overdrafts

A debit authorization reduces your available balance right away, even though the charge has not posted. If other transactions clear between authorization and settlement, your account can dip below zero. Some banks charge an overdraft fee in that scenario, because the balance was positive at purchase but negative at settlement.1FDIC. Supervisory Guidance on Charging Overdraft Fees for Authorize Positive, Settle Negative Transactions Keeping a cushion in checking or turning on low-balance alerts helps you avoid the timing gap.

ACH Transfers

Automated Clearing House transfers handle most payroll deposits, recurring bills, and bank-to-bank moves in the United States. Instead of processing each payment on its own, ACH gathers transactions into batches that move through a centralized clearing system. Standard ACH settles within one to three business days, which is why employers and billers usually initiate them several days ahead of the scheduled date.

Same-Day ACH

When you need speed, Same-Day ACH clears within a single business day if the sending institution submits before the processing-window deadlines. Each transaction is capped at $1 million.2Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Frequently Asked Questions The bank still bundles these into batch files, so actual arrival depends on when that day’s file closes. Fees run higher than standard ACH but well below wire pricing for time-sensitive amounts under the cap.

Real-Time Payment Networks

Two newer rails clear and settle within seconds, and they run continuously. Unlike ACH or wires, they do not close for nights, weekends, or federal holidays.

FedNow

The Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service processes payments 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no scheduled downtime.3Federal Reserve. FedNow Service Operating Hours Money typically lands in the recipient’s account within seconds. As of late 2025, the per-transaction limit rose from $1 million to $10 million, opening the network to larger business payments.4FedNow Instant Payments. FedNow Service Increases Network Transaction Limit to $10 Million Not every bank has joined, so availability depends on whether your institution participates.

RTP

The RTP network, operated by The Clearing House, works on the same principle. Funds arrive within seconds after the sending bank initiates the transfer, and the receiving bank must make the money available immediately. RTP also carries a $10 million per-transaction limit.5The Clearing House. Cash Flow Needs from Consumers and Businesses Drive New RTP Network Volume and Value Records The two networks are not interoperable. A payment sent through FedNow cannot arrive on RTP, so both banks need to sit on the same rail.

Peer-to-Peer Apps

Apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle each treat timing differently, and the speed you see depends on whether you are sending money to another user or pulling it out to a bank account.

Zelle transfers between enrolled users typically arrive within minutes, moving directly between bank accounts through the Zelle network. If the recipient has not yet enrolled, they have 14 days to sign up before the payment is canceled and returned to you.6Bank of America. Zelle FAQs – Security, Sending, and Receiving Money

Venmo transfers between users are essentially instant inside the app. Moving that balance out to a bank account is free with a standard transfer, which takes one to three business days, or available in minutes through an instant transfer that costs 1.75% of the amount, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum.7Venmo. About Venmo Fees

Cash App standard withdrawals to an external bank account are free and land within one to three business days. Instant deposits to a linked debit card arrive faster but carry a fee.8Cash App. Withdrawal Transfer Speed Options

P2P apps generally offer weaker fraud protections than credit cards. Once you send to the wrong person, getting the money back depends on the recipient’s cooperation and the app’s policy rather than a federal chargeback right.

Wire Transfers

Wires are the traditional choice for moving a large sum quickly, whether for a home purchase, a business closing, or an international payment. They skip ACH batching and send instructions directly between banks.

Domestic Wires

A domestic wire sent before your bank’s daily cutoff generally settles the same business day. The Fedwire system, run by the Federal Reserve, processes wires throughout the business day with final cutoffs in the late afternoon or early evening Eastern time.9Federal Reserve Financial Services. Wholesale Services Operating Hours and FedPayments Manager Outgoing wire fees at major banks typically run $25 to $35, though some banks charge nothing and others up to $40. Incoming wires are often cheaper or free.

International Wires

International wires typically take one to five business days. The payment travels through the SWIFT network, often passing through one or more intermediary banks before reaching the final recipient.10Citi. How Long Does a Wire Transfer Take Each intermediary runs its own compliance checks and may deduct a processing fee, generally $15 to $50 per stop, which means the recipient can receive less than the amount sent. Currency conversion adds another cost layer, since banks usually apply an exchange-rate markup on top of any flat fee. If the full amount needs to arrive intact, ask your bank about fee options that let the sender cover all intermediary charges upfront.

Check Deposits

Paper checks and their electronic equivalents follow Regulation CC, the federal rule implementing the Expedited Funds Availability Act, which caps how long a bank can hold deposited funds.11eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)

Standard Timelines

Under Regulation CC, most check deposits must be available within two to five business days. The first $275 of a deposit is required to be available by the next business day.12eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) – Section: 229.10 Next-Day Availability Certain check types, including cashier’s checks, government checks, and checks drawn on the same bank, qualify for full next-business-day availability when deposited in person.

Large Deposits and Extended Holds

When the total amount deposited by check on a single day exceeds $6,725, your bank can place an extended hold on the portion above that threshold.13eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) – Section: 229.13 Exceptions Extended holds also apply to accounts that have been repeatedly overdrawn, checks from accounts that have previously bounced, and checks the bank has reasonable cause to doubt. If your bank places an extended hold, it must tell you the reason and when the funds will be available.

Mobile Deposits

Depositing through your bank’s app triggers slightly different rules. Because a mobile deposit is not made in person, check types that would normally qualify for next-day availability, such as cashier’s checks or government checks, get an extra business day and become available by the second business day instead.12eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) – Section: 229.10 Next-Day Availability Many banks also set lower mobile deposit limits than in-branch limits, so a large check may need to go to a branch or ATM.

What Slows Payments Down

Even on a fast rail, external factors can stretch the clock. Two show up most often.

Cutoffs, Weekends, and Holidays

For every rail except FedNow and RTP, a business day runs Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays observed by the Federal Reserve. Transactions initiated after a bank’s daily cutoff, which varies but generally falls between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., roll to the next business day.14Bank of America. Cutoff Times for Deposits, Transfers and Payments A wire sent at 5:30 p.m. on Friday will not begin processing until Monday morning, or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday.

Compliance Reviews

Under the Bank Secrecy Act, banks must verify identities and monitor transactions for suspicious activity as part of their anti-money-laundering programs.15OCC. Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) Large or unusual transfers can trigger a manual review, and you may be asked to confirm your identity or provide documentation before the money moves. Banks also file a Suspicious Activity Report with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network when a transaction meets certain thresholds, generally $5,000 or more, or shows patterns consistent with fraud or money laundering.16FinCEN. Interpretation of Suspicious Activity Reporting Requirements These checks can add hours or days to a routine transfer.

If a Payment Doesn’t Arrive on Time

When you report an error on an electronic transfer, whether an incorrect amount, a missing deposit, or a duplicate charge, your bank generally has 10 business days to investigate and three more to report the results. It can extend the investigation to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account within the original 10-day window so you have access to the disputed funds while the review continues.17eCFR. 12 CFR 205.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors For accounts opened within the previous 30 days, the bank gets 20 business days before provisional credit is required, and the total window stretches to 90 days. Report suspected errors in writing and keep a copy of what you send.
