A 401(k) withdrawal from Principal generally takes about one to two weeks from a complete request to money in your account, while pension payouts typically take at least a month.1Principal. What to Know Before You Take Money Out: 401(k) Withdrawal or 401(k) Loan2Principal. What Are the Options for Your Pension Payout How long it actually takes for Principal to deposit funds depends on three things stacked back to back: how fast your employer approves the request, how you asked to be paid, and whether your bank places a hold once the money arrives.
The Three Stages Behind the Timeline
Every distribution moves through the same sequence. First, Principal verifies your identity and your plan sponsor (usually someone in HR or benefits at your employer) confirms you have a qualifying event, such as leaving the job, reaching age 59½, disability, or an eligible hardship.3Internal Revenue Service. When Can a Retirement Plan Distribute Benefits Second, Principal liquidates your investments, selling the mutual fund shares or other holdings in your account. Third, the cash is sent to you by the delivery method you chose.
The employer approval stage is where most surprises happen. If your benefits administrator is slow to sign off, or a form is missing information, the clock pauses until it’s cleared. The one-to-two-week estimate assumes a clean request with a responsive plan sponsor.
What Can Slow Approval Down
Spousal Consent
If you are married and your plan is subject to joint and survivor annuity rules, your spouse must give written consent before you can take a distribution in a form other than the default annuity. The signature has to be witnessed by a plan representative or a notary public.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 29 U.S. Code 1055 – Requirement of Joint and Survivor Annuity and Preretirement Survivor Annuity Getting that notarized signature can easily add days if a spouse is traveling or hard to reach.
A Qualified Domestic Relations Order
If your account is subject to a QDRO from a divorce, the plan administrator has to review the order before releasing funds. There is no fixed statutory deadline; the review must happen within a “reasonable period of time,” and unclear or incomplete orders take longer because the administrator has to go back for corrections.5U.S. Department of Labor. QDROs: The Division of Retirement Benefits Through Qualified Domestic Relations Orders
An Outstanding 401(k) Loan
If you left your employer with a loan balance against your 401(k), the plan has to account for that balance before releasing the rest. When the loan cannot be repaid, the unpaid amount is offset against your account and reported on a 1099-R as a distribution.6Internal Revenue Service. Plan Loan Offsets That accounting step has to finish before the remainder can go out.
How You’re Paid Changes the Timing
Once Principal has approved the distribution and liquidated your investments, delivery is either fast or slow depending on what you picked.
- ACH direct deposit is the fastest option. Transfers through the Automated Clearing House network can settle the same business day or within one to two business days, provided you linked a checking or savings account to your Principal account before requesting the distribution.7Nacha. The ABCs of ACH
- A paper check adds roughly seven to ten business days of mail time after the check is printed. Checks from financial institutions often arrive in plain envelopes, so watch your mail.
A direct rollover, where the money goes from Principal to another retirement account without passing through your hands, depends on how quickly the receiving institution posts the incoming funds.
Market Cutoffs and Settlement
Because your balance is invested, the liquidation itself has its own schedule. The standard mutual fund trading cutoff is 4:00 PM Eastern. A request received before that deadline trades at that day’s closing price; a request received after processes the next business day.8Vanguard. Buying and Selling Mutual Funds Weekends and federal holidays push a late Friday request into Monday.
After the trade executes, the sale has to settle before cash can be moved. As of May 2024, most securities settle on a T+1 basis, meaning settlement happens the next business day after the trade.9FINRA. Understanding Settlement Cycles: What Does T+1 Mean for You Some mutual funds may take an extra day.
Your Bank May Hold the Deposit
Money leaving Principal isn’t the same as money you can spend. Under Federal Reserve Regulation CC, your bank follows an availability schedule and can place extended holds on larger deposits.10eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
The threshold to know is $6,725, effective July 1, 2025. Your bank must make the first $6,725 of a check deposit available on its standard schedule, generally by the second business day.11eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule Anything above $6,725 can be held longer. On checks drawn on a local bank, the excess can be held for up to an additional five business days, for a total of seven business days.12Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance ACH deposits generally clear faster than paper checks. That’s a good reason to choose electronic delivery for a large distribution.
The Amount Deposited Will Be Smaller Than Your Balance
What lands in your account is not the full account balance if taxes are withheld, and for a 401(k) paid directly to you, withholding is not optional. The plan must withhold 20% for federal income taxes on any distribution paid to you rather than rolled directly into another retirement account. A direct rollover from Principal to your new IRA or 401(k) has no withholding.13Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions IRA distributions default to 10% withholding, but you can elect out.
Take a distribution before age 59½ and you generally owe an additional 10% tax on the taxable portion on top of ordinary income tax.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 72 – Annuities; Certain Proceeds of Endowment and Life Insurance Contracts Several exceptions exist, including a distribution after leaving your job during or after the year you turn 55, disability, and certain hardship situations.15Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – Exceptions to Tax on Early Distributions
If You’re Rolling the Money Over
Requesting a check with the plan to roll it over yourself starts a 60-day countdown. From the day you receive the funds, you have 60 days to deposit them into an eligible retirement account, or the whole amount becomes taxable income for that year, plus the 10% penalty may apply if you are under 59½.13Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions
There’s a catch. Because 20% was already withheld, the check you receive is only 80% of the distribution. To roll over the full original amount, you have to make up that 20% from other cash. Deposit only what the check shows and the IRS treats the withheld 20% as a taxable distribution. You would eventually recover the withholding as a tax refund, but you have to front it in the meantime. A direct rollover avoids both the withholding and the 60-day deadline.
A Realistic Timeline
For a straightforward 401(k) withdrawal with ACH deposit and no spousal consent, QDRO, or loan issues, plan on roughly one to two weeks from a complete request to available funds. Add mail time if you chose a paper check. Add potential hold time from your bank if the deposit is above $6,725 and arrives as a check. For a pension, plan on at least a month, because the plan administrator has to calculate the benefit and set the payment schedule before anything moves.
