Most direct deposits take one to three business days to process, and a standard payroll direct deposit typically posts to your account on the morning of your scheduled payday after settling through the Automated Clearing House network at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule Same-day ACH, early-access programs offered by many banks, and the newer FedNow instant payment service can shorten that window; weekends, federal holidays, first-time setup verification, and errors can extend it.
The Typical Payroll Timeline
For a normal paycheck, your employer submits the payroll file to its bank one or two business days before payday. That file moves through the ACH network in batches, not one payment at a time, which is why the money doesn’t arrive the instant it’s sent.2Nacha. The ABCs of ACH Non-same-day transactions settle at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on the designated settlement date, and your bank must credit the deposit to your account as of the date it receives the funds.3eCFR. 12 CFR Part 1005 – Electronic Fund Transfers Regulation E
A Nacha rule taking effect on September 18, 2026, tightens the timing on the receiving end: banks will have to make deposited amounts available for withdrawal no later than 9:00 a.m. local time on the settlement date.4Nacha. Funds Availability Requirements for Non-Same Day Credit Entries Many banks already post before that, but the new rule closes the gap that sometimes pushed availability into the afternoon.
Before the deposit fully posts, you may see a “pending” status in online banking. That means your bank has been notified of the incoming credit but settlement hasn’t finalized.
Why Some Banks Post Your Pay Early
Many banks and credit unions advertise paychecks up to two business days early. This isn’t the ACH network moving faster. The bank is choosing to release the funds as soon as it sees the incoming payment notification, ahead of formal settlement the next morning.
Not every deposit qualifies. Early access is usually limited to recurring payroll or government benefit deposits with a predictable pattern. One-time transfers, tax refunds, and deposits from unfamiliar senders may not trigger it. How many days early you actually see the money depends on when your employer submits the file and your bank’s policy.
Same-Day and Instant Options
Same-Day ACH lets a payment be submitted and settled on the same business day. The network offers three daily submission windows, with deadlines at 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:45 p.m. Eastern; funds settle at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. ET.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. FedACH Processing Schedule A single same-day transaction can be up to $1,000,000.5Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Frequently Asked Questions Because the originating bank pays a per-transaction fee for same-day service that may be passed along, most employers still use standard next-day settlement for regular payroll.6Nacha. The FedNow Service, launched by the Federal Reserve, settles payments individually in real time and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and federal holidays.7Federal Reserve Bank Services. FedNow Instant Payments at a Glance Adoption is still early, and most employers do not yet use FedNow for payroll.
What Slows a Deposit Down
Weekends and Federal Holidays
The ACH network settles only on business days. Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays are excluded because the Federal Reserve’s settlement service is closed.2Nacha. The ABCs of ACH A payroll file submitted on Friday evening won’t settle until Monday, or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve banks observe it on the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is treated as the holiday.9Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule 2026 Many employers plan for this by sending payroll early so the deposit lands the last business day before the closure.
First-Time Setup
When you first enroll in direct deposit, your first paycheck may still arrive as a paper check. Many employers and banks send a “prenote,” a zero-dollar test transaction that confirms your routing and account numbers are valid. The prenote can take up to three business days to clear. Some employers skip it and send a small test deposit of a few cents that you confirm receiving. Once verified, later deposits follow the standard timeline.
Errors and Bad Account Numbers
A transposed digit, a wire routing number given instead of the ACH routing number, or a late payroll file can push a deposit past the usual window. If the transaction is rejected, it has to be reissued, which effectively resets the clock.
Government Benefits Follow a Fixed Calendar
Federal benefit payments run on set monthly schedules rather than employer-driven timelines.
Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability payments are deposited on a specific Wednesday each month based on your date of birth: the second Wednesday for birth dates on the 1st through 10th, the third Wednesday for the 11th through 20th, and the fourth Wednesday for the 21st through 31st.10Social Security Administration. Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026-2027 Supplemental Security Income is deposited on the 1st of each month, or the last business day before it if the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday. If you receive both, your Social Security payment arrives on the 3rd of the month instead.
VA disability and pension payments are generally deposited on the first business day of each month, with the deposit moving to the last business day of the previous month when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday.
Tax Refunds Take Longer
The IRS estimates that electronically filed returns with direct deposit selected produce a refund within about 21 days of filing.11Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The wait is longer than payroll because the return has to be processed and verified before payment is initiated. You can check your refund status 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return.
One boundary worth knowing: the IRS limits electronic refund deposits to three per bank account per year. A fourth refund directed to the same account is automatically converted to a paper check and mailed. The account must be in the taxpayer’s own name, and the rule applies to prepaid debit cards as well.12Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Limits
If Your Deposit Is Late
Start by ruling out the routine causes before assuming something is wrong.
- Double-check the routing and account numbers you gave your employer. Some banks use different routing numbers for wires and ACH, and mixing them up will cause a return.
- Ask your payroll department whether the file was submitted on time. If the employer sent funds to the wrong account through its own mistake, the employer still owes you the pay and must reissue it.
- Contact your bank. It can tell you whether an incoming ACH credit is pending, has been rejected, or hasn’t arrived, and it can share the return reason code if the deposit bounced.
For payroll, reaching out on the first business day after the expected date is reasonable. For Social Security and other federal benefit payments, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional business days past the expected date before contacting the agency.
