A domestic bank draft usually takes one to five business days to clear, and how long a bank draft takes to clear on your end depends mostly on where you deposit it and whether the bank places any exception hold on the money. An international bank draft is a different animal and can take three to six weeks. One more thing to know before anything else: the day your bank tells you the funds are “available” is not necessarily the day the draft has actually cleared.
The Standard Domestic Timeline
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits on how long your bank can make you wait for deposited funds, and bank drafts — meaning cashier’s checks, teller’s checks, and certified checks — get some of the fastest treatment under those rules.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
How you deposit the draft changes the timeline more than most people realize:
- In person at a branch teller. Funds must be available by the next business day, as long as you deposit the draft into an account where you are the named payee.
- Mobile app or your bank’s own ATM. Availability extends to the second business day.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
- An ATM not owned by your bank. Your bank has until the fifth business day after deposit to release the funds.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule
For other kinds of checks that aren’t bank-guaranteed, Regulation CC’s availability schedule gives banks until the second business day for local checks and the fifth business day for nonlocal checks.2eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule
There is also a floor that applies regardless of the deposit type. Your bank must make at least $275 of the deposit available by the next business day.3CFPB. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Threshold Adjustments
Two operational details bend those timelines in practice. Most banks set a daily cutoff — often 2:00 p.m. or later — after which any deposit counts as received on the next business day. And weekends and federal holidays pause the clock, because Federal Reserve settlement systems are closed on those days.4Federal Reserve Services. If you want the fastest access, walk the draft into a branch and hand it to a teller during business hours.
When the Timeline Gets Longer
Even a bank draft can sit on hold beyond the standard schedule in a few situations spelled out in Regulation CC.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.13 – Exceptions
Large Deposits Over $6,725
If your total check deposits on a single banking day exceed $6,725, the bank can hold the amount over that threshold for additional business days.3CFPB. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Threshold Adjustments The first $6,725 still follows the normal schedule.
Accounts Open Less Than 30 Days
New accounts get stricter rules. Cashier’s checks and similar bank-guaranteed instruments still get next-day availability on the first $6,725, but any excess can be held until the ninth business day after deposit.1eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC)
Exception Holds
A bank can extend a hold if it has a specific, documented reason to doubt the draft will be paid, if your account has been repeatedly overdrawn in the past six months, or if emergency conditions like a natural disaster or communications failure disrupt banking.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.13 – Exceptions An exception hold can add up to five business days for local checks and six for nonlocal checks. When the bank invokes an exception, it must give you written notice stating the reason and the date your funds will be available.
International Bank Drafts
An international bank draft can take three to six weeks. The process is called clean collection, and it typically requires the physical document to travel back to the foreign issuing bank for verification, bypassing domestic clearinghouse networks.6International Trade Administration. Documentary Collections Your bank waits for the foreign institution to transmit the actual funds through a correspondent banking relationship before finalizing the credit, and the exchange rate is generally locked at that later point rather than at deposit. Anti-money laundering reviews can add more time.
One thing worth knowing before you agree to accept an international draft: payments that cross borders may pass through one or more correspondent banks, and each can deduct a small fee. You may end up receiving slightly less than the face value, and the exact routing varies from one transaction to the next, so the deductions are hard to predict.
Available Funds Are Not the Same as Cleared Funds
This is the single most important thing to understand. When your bank releases funds under Regulation CC, it is giving you a provisional credit — an advance based on the assumption that the draft will be paid.7FDIC. VI-1 Expedited Funds Availability Act The draft has not necessarily cleared yet.
If the draft is returned unpaid for any reason, including fraud, your bank has the legal right to reverse the deposit and charge your account for the full amount even if you have already spent the money.8OCC. Fraudulent Cashiers Checks – Guidance to National Banks Concerning Schemes Involving Fraudulent Cashiers Checks A charge-back can drive your account negative, leaving you owing the bank.
Fraudsters build entire schemes on this gap. A common version: someone sends you a bank draft for more than an agreed price, then asks you to wire the “overpayment” back. The draft looks real, your bank makes the funds available on schedule, you send the difference, and the draft is later returned as counterfeit. You are on the hook for the full amount.9DOJ. Public Advisory – Special Report on Counterfeit Checks and Money Orders Warning signs:
- The draft is for more than the purchase price, and the sender wants the excess wired back.
- Amounts or signatures on the draft look erased or written over.
- You don’t know the sender and there is pressure to act quickly.
The safe rule with an unfamiliar sender is to wait until the draft has fully cleared — meaning the issuing bank has actually paid your bank — before spending any of it. If you’re unsure whether that point has been reached, ask your bank directly. “Available” on the app is not the same answer.
If Your Bank Holds Funds Too Long
Any time your bank places an exception hold that pushes availability beyond the standard schedule, it owes you a written notice stating the reason and the date the funds will be released.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.13 – Exceptions If you think a hold is unjustified, ask for that notice. Compare your ledger balance, which includes held funds, with your available balance to see what is actually being withheld.
A bank that violates Regulation CC’s availability rules can be liable for your actual damages plus statutory damages of $100 to $1,000 per violation. In a class action, total recovery can reach the lesser of $500,000 or one percent of the bank’s net worth.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 4010 – Civil Liability If the bank cannot point to a Regulation CC exception that fits your situation, you can file a complaint with the bank’s federal regulator or with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
