How Long Do Student Loans Stay on Your Credit Report?

Negative marks from student loans — late payments, collections, and defaults — stay on your credit report for seven years, while loans you pay off in good standing can remain for up to ten. That is the short answer to how long student loans stay on your credit report, and it holds for both federal and private loans with one narrow exception: defaulted Perkins Loans can be reported indefinitely until you pay them off or rehabilitate them.

The Seven-Year Rule for Late Payments and Defaults

The Fair Credit Reporting Act caps how long most negative information can appear on your credit file at seven years. That cap covers individual late payments, collection accounts, and defaults on federal and private student loans alike.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Each late payment gets its own seven-year countdown, and the default notation does too.

Default itself doesn’t happen on the first missed payment. Federal student loans go into default after 270 days of missed payments, at which point your servicer reports the default to the credit bureaus and may transfer the account to collections.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Default and Collections FAQs Private lenders move faster. Many declare default after 90 days, and some loan agreements permit default after a single missed payment, so check your promissory note for the specific terms.

When the Clock Actually Starts

The seven years do not begin on the day you missed a payment. For accounts placed in collection, the clock starts 180 days after the date of the first delinquency that led to the collection — the first missed payment you never brought current.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports From that first missed payment to removal is closer to seven and a half years in practice.

Selling the debt, transferring your loan to a new servicer, or consolidating it cannot restart that clock. Federal guidance requires furnishers to maintain written policies against “re-aging,” meaning inaccurately advancing the delinquency date.3Federal Trade Commission. Consumer Reports – What Information Furnishers Need to Know If a defaulted loan reappears with a fresher delinquency date after being sold or transferred, that is a reportable error.

One more thing worth knowing: the seven-year reporting cap is not the same as a statute of limitations. Federal student loans have no statute of limitations on collection, so the debt can still be pursued after it stops appearing on your credit report.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Ten Years for Loans Closed in Good Standing

Student loans you pay off on time and close in good standing can remain on your credit report for up to ten years from the date of last activity.5TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores That is a benefit rather than a penalty: a long history of on-time payments lengthens the average age of your accounts and shows reliable repayment.

If a loan had a bumpy stretch of late payments but you eventually paid it off, the late marks still fall off at their own seven-year mark, while the account can stay for the full ten years so long as it was current when closed.6Experian. How Long Do Closed Accounts Stay on Your Credit Report When the ten-year window closes, the account drops off automatically, and you may see a small score fluctuation as your account mix and average age shift.

The Perkins Loan Exception

Perkins Loans do not follow the seven-year cap. Under the Higher Education Act, a defaulted Perkins Loan can be reported on your credit file indefinitely, until you pay the balance in full. The statute explicitly overrides the Fair Credit Reporting Act’s time limits for these loans.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087cc – Agreements With Institutions of Higher Education No other student loan carries this consequence.

The Perkins Loan Program itself ended in 2017, with last disbursements by June 30, 2018.8Federal Student Aid. Participating in the Perkins Loan Program Borrowers with older Perkins Loans in default are still subject to the indefinite reporting rule.

Rehabilitation is the way out short of full payment. Nine consecutive full monthly on-time payments require the school to instruct the credit bureaus to remove the default from your credit history within 30 days of the last qualifying payment.9eCFR. 34 CFR Part 674 – Federal Perkins Loan Program Perkins rehabilitation uses full monthly payments set by your school, not the reduced income-based payments allowed for Direct Loan rehabilitation.

Getting a Default Off Your Report Early

For Direct Loans and FFEL Program loans, rehabilitation is the only path that actually removes a default notation from your credit report before the seven-year cap runs out. You make nine voluntary, affordable monthly payments within a ten-consecutive-month window, at an amount your loan holder sets based on your income. After the ninth qualifying payment, the Department of Education asks the credit bureaus to remove the default record.10Federal Student Aid. Getting Out of Default

There is an important limit. Rehabilitation erases the default itself, but the individual late payments reported before the loan went into default stay on your report for their full seven years. Removing the default is still a meaningful improvement, because a “default” status is among the most damaging entries a credit report can carry.

Note that consolidating a defaulted federal loan does not remove the default from your credit history — the old account keeps showing the default until its own seven-year period runs out.10Federal Student Aid. Getting Out of Default Consolidation resolves the default status of the debt itself, but rehabilitation is what cleans up the credit report.

What Consolidation, Refinancing, and Forgiveness Do

When you consolidate or refinance, your original loans are reported as closed, either “paid in full” or “transferred,” and follow the standard ten-year timeline for closed accounts in good standing.11Federal Student Aid. Credit Reporting A new account appears for the consolidation or refinance loan with its own payment history starting from day one. Both sets of accounts show on your report at the same time for a while, which is normal. Refinancing typically triggers a hard inquiry, which can briefly dent your score.12Equifax. Do Student Loans Affect Your Credit Scores

Forgiven federal loans — through Public Service Loan Forgiveness, income-driven repayment forgiveness, or similar programs — are reported as closed with a zero balance. From there they follow the ordinary timeline: up to ten years on your report if in good standing, or seven years from the date of first delinquency if past due when they closed.11Federal Student Aid. How Much a Delinquency Drops Your Score

Federal Reserve Bank of New York research puts numbers on the initial hit from a new student loan delinquency of 90 or more days past due. The higher your starting score, the bigger the drop:

  • Starting score below 620: about an 87-point drop
  • Starting score 620–659: about a 143-point drop
  • Starting score 660–719: about a 165-point drop
  • Starting score 720–759: about a 165-point drop
  • Starting score 760 or higher: about a 171-point drop

Those figures capture the initial shock.13Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Credit Score Impacts From Past Due Student Loan Payments The weight of negative marks eases over time even before they fall off at year seven, and bringing the account current, completing rehabilitation, or paying it off all speed the recovery.

Disputing an Entry That Should Be Gone

If a student loan entry is inaccurate — a default that has passed the seven-year cap, a delinquency date improperly re-aged after a transfer, a rehabilitated default still showing — you can dispute it. Credit bureaus must investigate any dispute you submit and report the results back to you.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports

File in writing with Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Include your contact information, the disputed account number, a clear explanation of the error, and copies of any supporting documents. The bureau forwards the dispute to the furnisher, which generally has 30 days to investigate and respond.14Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report Certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof of delivery. If the furnisher stands by the entry, you can ask the bureau to attach a statement to your file explaining your side, and for servicer-specific problems you can also complain directly to the servicer and, if needed, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
