GM Financial Disbursement Check: Depositing, Repairs, and Total Loss

A GM Financial disbursement check is a refund the lender sends when money is owed back to you — most often after a loan payoff, a canceled GAP or service contract, or an insurance claim on your financed vehicle. If the check names only you, deposit it like any other check. If it names both you and GM Financial, your bank will not accept it until GM Financial endorses it too, which means mailing it in with supporting documents first.

Why the Check Arrived

Three situations produce these refunds, and figuring out which one applies to you determines what you do next.

The first is a simple overpayment. Payoff quotes are calculated for a specific date, so if your final payment arrived early or ran slightly over the balance, the difference comes back to you automatically. You don’t need to request it.1GM Financial. GM Financial FAQ – Extra Payment Refund

The second is a canceled add-on product. If you financed GAP coverage or an extended service contract into your loan and the vehicle was paid off early, totaled, or traded in, the unused portion is refunded on a prorated basis. Cancellations themselves go through the originating dealership or the product’s program administrator, not GM Financial; GM Financial only issues the refund once the cancellation is processed.2GM Financial. The third is an insurance-related payment after a covered repair or a total loss. Because GM Financial holds the lien on your vehicle, insurers usually make repair checks payable to both you and GM Financial. Those have their own deposit process.

Depositing a Check Payable Only to You

If your name is the only one on the payee line, treat the check like any other. Confirm the payee matches your bank account, sign the back, and deposit at a branch, an ATM, or through your bank’s mobile app. Some banks require you to write “For Mobile Deposit Only” above your signature when using a phone.

Under federal availability rules, the first $275 of the deposit becomes accessible on the next business day.3eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability The rest of a standard corporate check generally clears by the second business day after deposit.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule Banks can hold funds longer for new accounts, large deposits, or repeated overdrafts, but most customers see the full amount within two business days.

Check the face of the check for a “void after” date. GM Financial disbursement checks may print a 90- or 180-day window. Even without that language, banks are not required to honor a check presented more than six months after issue.5Legal Information Institute. Depositing an Insurance Repair Check That Names GM Financial

When your insurer pays for a covered repair on a financed vehicle, the settlement check is almost always made payable to both you and GM Financial. If “and” joins the two names, both parties must endorse before any bank will accept it. You cannot deposit it on your own.

GM Financial has a specific process. Endorse the back of the check yourself, write your GM Financial account number on it, and mail the check with supporting documents to the Insurance Repair Department at P.O. Box 736312, Dallas, TX 75373-6312. What you send with the check depends on who did the work:

  • If a shop did the repairs, include the complete insurance company estimate and the repair shop’s final bill showing the total cost, plus the shop’s name, address, phone number, and contact person.
  • If you or someone you know did the repairs, include the complete insurance company estimate, before-and-after photos of the vehicle, receipts for all parts and supplies, and an itemized list of repairs with the repairer’s name, address, and phone number.

If you send the check without your own endorsement first, GM Financial will return it to you by FedEx next-business-day delivery with a letter asking you to sign. Once the packet is complete, the company processes the check and sends payment to the appropriate party within 72 hours by FedEx next-business-day delivery.6GM Financial. Total Loss Checks Work Differently

A total loss follows a different path than a repair claim. The insurer typically sends the settlement check directly to GM Financial rather than issuing a co-payable check. Once GM Financial receives it, applying the payment to your account takes three to five business days.2GM Financial. Frequently Asked Questions – GM Financial

If the insurance payout exceeds your loan balance, the surplus belongs to you. GM Financial releases that overage within 15 business days after applying the insurance check.2GM Financial. Deposit it the standard way.

If the insurance payout falls short of your balance, you still owe the difference unless you bought GAP coverage. GAP covers the shortfall between the settlement and the remaining balance, minus your deductible. Any overage left after both the insurance and GAP payments are applied gets refunded to you on the same 15-business-day timeline.

If the amount doesn’t match what you expected, gather your original payoff statement and any paperwork on canceled add-on products, then call with your account number and the check number and ask for a breakdown. Overpayment math is simple. Product cancellation refunds are prorated, and the number can come in smaller than people expect if time passed between the qualifying event and the cancellation.

If the Check Is in the Name of Someone Who Has Died

A check payable to a deceased person legally belongs to that person’s estate, and you cannot endorse and deposit it yourself. It takes someone with legal authority — an executor named in a will or an administrator appointed by a probate court — to handle the funds.

For smaller amounts, many states allow a simplified process called a small estate affidavit, which lets a rightful heir claim personal property without full probate. Dollar thresholds, waiting periods, and requirements vary by state, but the concept is the same: a sworn statement, a certified death certificate, and presentation to the bank. If the check is large enough to exceed your state’s small estate limit, formal probate is likely necessary.

Before starting probate for a small refund, call GM Financial at 1-800-284-2271 and ask whether the check can be reissued in the name of the estate or a surviving joint account holder.7GM Financial. Contact GM Financial Not every situation qualifies, but it costs nothing to ask.

What Happens If You Never Cash It

Ignoring the check doesn’t erase the money, but it does make recovery harder. After the check expires, GM Financial has to make a good-faith effort to reach you at your last known address. If those attempts fail, the funds are eventually turned over to the state where you last resided under a process called escheatment. Dormancy periods vary by state, typically running from one to five years depending on the type of property. Once the money reaches the state’s unclaimed property office, you can still claim it, but you’ll be filing paperwork through that program instead of simply depositing a check.
