Does Zip Run Your Credit? Soft or Hard Pull?

Zip does not run a hard credit check. Signing up for an account or making a purchase triggers only a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your credit score and is not visible to other lenders. Zip also does not report your standard Pay in 4 activity to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, so on-time payments will not build credit and normal use will not hurt it either. The one way Zip can damage your credit is if a seriously past-due balance gets sent to a collection agency.

Soft Inquiry, Not a Hard Pull

Zip pulls a soft credit inquiry when you create an account, and it may reassess your creditworthiness again before each purchase. A January 2025 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau report on the six major buy now, pay later providers confirmed that all of them, Zip included, rely on soft inquiries in their underwriting.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Consumer Use of Buy Now, Pay Later and Other Unsecured Debt A soft pull lets Zip review a condensed version of your credit profile without leaving a mark other lenders can see.

Hard inquiries, the kind triggered by credit card and mortgage applications, can temporarily lower your score. Zip’s soft pull does not. You may see the inquiry when you check your own credit report, usually under a section labeled something like “inquiries that do not affect your credit rating,” but no creditor pulling your file will see it.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows a company to access your credit information when you initiate a transaction with it or when it needs to review whether you still meet account terms.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Zip’s soft pull fits that permissible purpose because it is checking your creditworthiness for a purchase you have requested, not opening a formal loan account.

Does Zip Show Up on Your Credit Report?

For most users, Zip has no effect on their credit report at all. The company does not report on-time payments on its standard Pay in 4 product to any of the three major credit bureaus. Paying every installment on time will not build a positive credit history, and successful use of Zip simply will not appear on your file.

Zip also does not report your internal spending limit as an open credit line. Because the bureaus never see that limit, your Zip account does not factor into your credit utilization ratio, one of the largest inputs to your credit score. In practical terms, opening and using a Zip account neither helps nor hurts your credit profile as long as you stay current.

How Missed Payments Can Hurt Your Credit

The exception to Zip’s neutral effect on your credit is a seriously delinquent account. You have a seven-day window after a missed due date before Zip charges a late fee of up to $7, and paying within that window avoids the fee.3Zip. Zip Loan Terms of Service

If installments stay past due long enough, Zip automatically refers the account to a collection agency.4Zip. Why Am I Being Sent to Collections? Zip does not publicly disclose exactly how many days trigger this, and its support team cannot tell you in advance when a specific order will be referred. Once the debt reaches a collection agency, that agency may add its own fees and will likely report the unpaid balance to one or more credit bureaus.

A collection account can significantly lower your credit score. It stays on your credit report for seven years from the date the original delinquency began, not from the date it was sent to collections.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Paying off the debt may update the status to “paid collection,” but the entry itself remains for the full seven-year window, and there is no guarantee Zip will reinstate your account after you settle a collections balance.

What Zip Looks At Instead

Because Zip does not run a hard credit check, approval depends on a different mix of signals. You have to be at least 18, live in the United States with a valid U.S. mailing address (P.O. boxes and military APO/FPO addresses are not accepted), have a working mobile phone number, and use a U.S. debit card.6Zip. Who Can Use Zip? Meeting those requirements does not guarantee approval, and Zip evaluates eligibility before every purchase.

The platform verifies your linked debit card by placing a small temporary authorization hold to confirm the account is active and can cover the first installment. Your mobile phone number helps Zip verify your identity. Zip also tracks internal data such as how long you have had the account and whether you paid previous installments on time, and that repayment history with Zip carries significant weight in how much spending power the system extends.

Frequent users who consistently pay on time may see their available spending power increase over several months. Because Zip weighs its own platform behavior heavily, people with limited or imperfect credit histories can still qualify. The system focuses on current reliability rather than older entries in your credit file, and none of that internal scoring shows up on your credit report.
