Zip runs a soft credit check when you sign up and another soft check each time you request a purchase, so using Zip does not pull your credit in a way that affects your score.1Zip. Does Using BNPL Affect Your Credit Score? The tradeoff is that Zip also does not report your payments to the credit bureaus, so on-time installments will not help you build a credit history either.
The Soft Check at Signup
When you create a Zip account, the platform runs a soft credit check to verify your identity and gauge basic financial reliability.2Zip. Is My Credit Affected by Using Zip? Soft inquiries are invisible to other lenders reviewing your credit report and have no effect on your score. You can see them when you pull your own report; no one else can.
That initial check helps Zip set a preliminary spending limit. New customers typically start with an estimated spending power around $200, which can rise over time with consistent on-time repayment.3Zip. Zip Insights – BNPL Framework
A Fresh Check on Every Purchase
Zip does not approve you once and let you spend up to a limit. It runs a separate underwriting check every time you request a new purchase, weighing your current outstanding balance, your internal repayment history, and other risk factors before approving or declining.3Zip. These per-purchase checks are also soft. They do not appear on the version of your credit report that other lenders see, and they do not add inquiry marks the way applying for a credit card would. You can use Zip repeatedly without that kind of accumulation on your file.
Approval isn’t guaranteed. Zip or its lending partner, WebBank, can lower your spending power at their discretion, including if you have a past-due balance or a previously unpaid account.3Zip. Does Zip Report Payments to Credit Bureaus?
No. Zip does not report customer payment information to the credit bureaus.1Zip. Does Using BNPL Affect Your Credit Score? Paying every installment on time will not build a positive credit history through Zip. Those on-time payments stay inside Zip’s system, where they influence your future spending limits and approval odds but do not show up on your credit file.
If your goal is to build credit, Zip is neutral. It will not hurt you for using it, and it will not help you either.
When Zip Can Actually Damage Your Credit
The one route from Zip to your credit report runs through collections. If an account goes seriously delinquent and Zip refers the debt to a third-party collection agency, the collector can report the delinquent account to one or more of the three major credit bureaus. Furnishers must ensure the data they report is accurate and must notify the bureau of the original delinquency date.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681s-2 – Responsibilities of Furnishers of Information to Consumer Reporting Agencies
Under federal law, a collection account or charged-off debt can stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the date you first became delinquent.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports A collection entry makes qualifying for mortgages, auto loans, and other credit products harder for years.
Before that stage, a missed installment triggers a late fee and can freeze your account until the overdue balance is cleared. The late fee itself doesn’t affect your credit. The referral to collections is what does.
A Note on Dispute Rights
Buy-now-pay-later users don’t have the same federal billing-dispute protections that credit card holders have. In May 2024, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued an interpretive rule classifying buy-now-pay-later lenders as credit card providers under the Truth in Lending Act, which would have given BNPL users formal rights to dispute charges, pause payments during investigations, and receive refunds for returned products. The CFPB withdrew that rule in May 2025.6Federal Register. Interpretive Rules, Policy Statements, and Advisory Opinions – Withdrawal
With that rule withdrawn, Zip is not currently required to follow the same dispute and refund procedures as a credit card issuer. You still have whatever rights your Zip agreement grants and whatever your state’s consumer protection laws provide. If a billing problem arises, resolve the return with the merchant first, then contact Zip support to adjust the installment plan.
