A Uniform Transfers to Minors Act account will reduce your child’s need-based financial aid, because the federal formula treats a UTMA as the student’s own asset and assesses 20% of its value toward college costs each year. That is nearly double the 12% rate applied to parental assets, so the same dollars carry far more weight in a custodial account than in a parent’s savings.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide The good news: a few well-timed moves can shrink the impact before you file the FAFSA.
Why a UTMA Counts as the Student’s Asset
Every contribution to a UTMA is an irrevocable gift. Once the donor transfers cash, stocks, or other property into the account, legal ownership passes to the child and cannot be reclaimed.2HelpWithMyBank.gov. What Is a Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) or Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) Account? A custodian manages the money, but the child is the legal owner from the moment of the gift.3Social Security Administration. POMS SI 01120.205 – Uniform Transfers to Minors Act
Because the minor holds legal title, financial aid rules treat the full balance as the student’s personal wealth. It does not matter that the student cannot touch the funds without the custodian’s approval, or that a grandparent, not a parent, opened the account. Ownership drives the classification, and the classification holds until the custodianship ends at the age of majority, which ranges from 18 to 25 depending on the state and the terms of the account.
How the 20% Assessment Rate Works
The FAFSA produces a Student Aid Index (SAI) that estimates what a family can contribute. Assets held in the student’s name, including a UTMA, are assessed at a flat 20%.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide A $30,000 UTMA balance adds $6,000 to the expected contribution, cutting eligibility for grants and subsidized loans by that amount.
Parental assets get gentler treatment in two ways. First, parents receive an asset protection allowance that runs roughly $5,500 to $10,500 for a two-parent household, depending on the age of the older parent, and that amount is excluded from the calculation entirely.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 U.S. Code 1087oo – Student Aid Index for Dependent Students Second, whatever remains after the allowance is assessed at 12%.5Federal Student Aid. Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Student assets get no protection allowance at all.
The gap is easy to see with numbers. Thirty thousand dollars in a student’s UTMA produces a $6,000 expected contribution. The same $30,000 in a parent’s savings account, assuming a 50-year-old parent with a $7,000 allowance, produces $2,760. The UTMA more than doubles the hit to the aid package.
Account Income Also Raises the SAI
Dividends, interest, and capital gains generated inside the UTMA in the base tax year (two years before the academic year) show up on the student’s tax return and flow into the student’s adjusted gross income on the FAFSA. That pushes the SAI higher on top of the asset assessment. For the 2026–2027 FAFSA, the base tax year is 2024, so any taxable earnings the account produced in 2024 will feed the formula.
Reporting the Account on the FAFSA
The FAFSA asks for the net worth of all investments, and a UTMA belongs in that category. Report it as a student asset regardless of who serves as custodian, whether that is a parent, grandparent, or unrelated adult.6Federal Student Aid. Filling Out the FAFSA Use the balance as of the date the student signs and submits the form, not a year-end figure or an average. Include cash, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and any other holdings in the account. If the UTMA holds real estate or other non-liquid property, use the current net value.
Private Colleges May Assess It Differently
Many private colleges award their institutional grants using the CSS Profile rather than relying only on the FAFSA.7The College Board. What Is CSS Profile – Higher Ed The Profile collects more detailed information, and each school can set its own formula. Some schools assess student-held custodial accounts at rates different from the federal 20%. Others look at balances across several years rather than a single snapshot, which limits the benefit of spending the account down right before you file. A student could qualify for a federal Pell Grant while receiving less institutional aid from a Profile school because of the same UTMA balance. If the target list includes Profile schools, call each financial aid office and ask how it treats custodial accounts.
Strategies to Reduce the Impact
UTMA contributions are irrevocable, so the money cannot simply be moved into a parent’s name. A few approaches can still lower how much of the account counts against the student.
Convert to a Custodial 529 Plan
The custodian can liquidate the UTMA and roll the proceeds into a custodial 529 college savings plan. For a dependent student, a custodial 529 is reported as a parent asset on the FAFSA, which drops the assessment rate from 20% to 12% and brings the parental asset protection allowance into play.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 U.S. Code 1087oo – Student Aid Index for Dependent Students On a $30,000 account, switching rates can shave roughly $3,000 off the expected contribution each year.
There are trade-offs. The custodial 529 must be titled to keep the child as the beneficiary; the custodian cannot redirect the funds to another child. When the student reaches the age of majority, full ownership of the 529 transfers to them, just as it would with the original UTMA. Liquidating the UTMA can also trigger capital gains on appreciated investments, so weigh that tax cost against the aid benefit.
Spend Down the Account Before Filing
Because the FAFSA captures the balance on the filing date, using UTMA funds for legitimate expenses before that date lowers the reported amount. The custodian’s fiduciary duty limits spending to things that benefit the minor, but that category is broad enough to cover a computer, textbooks, or other education-related costs.3Social Security Administration. POMS SI 01120.205 – Uniform Transfers to Minors Act Prepaying a tuition deposit or room-and-board charge can also work.
Timing matters. The 2026–2027 FAFSA typically opens October 1, 2025, and any spending should happen before the student signs and submits. If a CSS Profile school uses a multi-year look-back, a last-minute spend-down will not fully mask the earlier balance.
Check Whether the Simplified Formula Applies
Some low-income families qualify for a simplified SAI calculation that skips the asset questions entirely. Families whose parents filed a return with adjusted gross income below the applicable threshold, or who received certain means-tested benefits, may find that the UTMA does not factor into the calculation at all. If your income is close to the threshold, check the simplified-formula criteria before assuming the account will cost you aid.
What Changes at the Age of Majority
When the child reaches the age at which the custodianship ends, typically between 18 and 21, though some states allow extensions to 25, the custodian must transfer all remaining assets to the now-adult beneficiary.8FINRA. 2019 Report on Examination Findings and Observations – UTMA and UGMA Accounts For financial aid, that transfer changes nothing. The funds were already counted as a student asset while in custody, and they remain a student asset afterward. What changes is practical: the student can now spend or invest the money without the custodian’s approval.
2026–2027 FAFSA Notes
The 2026–2027 FAFSA restores the exclusion for small family-owned businesses (100 or fewer full-time employees) and family farms from the parental asset calculation.9Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form and Pell Grant Eligibility Updates That does not touch UTMAs directly, but it lowers the overall parental asset figure for families who own qualifying businesses or live on a farm, which raises the relative weight of the student’s UTMA in the calculation. The core assessment rates, 20% for student assets and 12% for parental assets, are unchanged for the 2026–2027 award year.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide If a UTMA already exists, run the numbers on a 529 conversion or a pre-filing spend-down before the student submits the form.
