Does Upstart Affect Your Credit Score? Pulls, Payments, and Payoff

Using Upstart can affect your credit score, but not until you move past the rate-check stage. Requesting a quote uses a soft credit inquiry that leaves your score untouched. Accepting an offer triggers a hard inquiry, and from there the loan helps or hurts your score based on how you handle the monthly payments.

Checking Your Rate Is a Soft Pull

When you request a rate on Upstart, the platform runs a soft credit inquiry. Soft inquiries do not affect your score and are not visible to other lenders who pull your file.1Upstart. Accepting an Offer Triggers a Hard Pull

Once you pick a loan offer and move to the formal application, Upstart or its partner bank runs a hard credit inquiry. That inquiry is visible on your credit report and typically causes a small, temporary drop in your score. It stays on your report for two years, though its scoring impact fades after roughly twelve months.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry

Why Shopping Multiple Personal Loans Costs More

FICO’s rate-shopping window, which treats multiple inquiries within 45 days as a single inquiry, only applies to mortgage, auto, and student loan applications.3myFICO. How to Rate Shop and Minimize the Impact to Your FICO Scores Personal loans do not get that protection. If you submit full applications to Upstart and two other personal loan lenders in the same month, each hard pull can ding your score on its own. Use soft-pull prequalification tools like Upstart’s rate check to narrow the field before you commit to any formal application.

How the Loan Moves Your Score Month to Month

After the loan funds, Upstart reports the account to Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion each month. The reports include the origination date, original balance, current balance, and your payment history.4Upstart Answers. How Payment History Impacts Your Credit Score Every on-time payment builds this part of your profile; every missed one damages it.

An Upstart loan can also improve your credit mix. If your report has only credit cards, adding an installment loan introduces an account type that scoring models reward. One thing it will not do: lower your credit utilization ratio. Utilization is a revolving-credit measure, and personal loans are installment credit, so the balance you carry on Upstart does not enter that ratio. Paying it down still reduces your total debt, which matters when a future lender looks at your debt-to-income.

Opening the loan will shave a bit off the average age of your accounts, which can produce a small initial dip. Over a three- or five-year term, that account ages and the effect reverses.

What Late Payments and Charge-Offs Do

Missing payments is the fastest way an Upstart loan can hurt you. Once a payment is at least 30 days past due, Upstart can report the delinquency to all three bureaus. A single 30-day late mark can drop a score by 100 points or more, and the damage grows at 60 and 90 days past due.

If the balance stays unpaid, often around 120 days for personal loans, the lender may charge the account off. A charge-off means Upstart has written the debt off as a loss, but you still owe it. The account can also be sent to collections, which adds a second negative mark. Under federal law, these entries can stay on your credit report for seven years from the date the delinquency began.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports

Upstart also charges a late fee of $15 or 5% of the past-due amount, whichever is greater, when a payment is more than 10 calendar days late. If you know a due date is going to slip, contact Upstart’s servicing team before the payment is actually late.

What Happens When You Pay the Loan Off

Paying off the loan is good financial news, but it can produce a small, temporary score drop. Closing the account reduces your active accounts and can narrow your credit mix, especially if the Upstart loan was your only installment account. Bureaus receive updated data every 30 to 45 days, so the score usually recovers within one or two reporting cycles.7Equifax. Fixing Reporting Errors

Lenders and bureaus have to report accurate information. If you find an error tied to your Upstart loan, such as a payment marked late that you paid on time, a wrong balance, or a missing account, you can dispute it.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
