Sezzle does not report to the credit bureaus by default. If you use the standard Pay in 4 plan, your purchases and on-time payments stay off your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion files. Reporting only happens if you opt into Sezzle Up, or if an unpaid balance is charged off and sent to a collection agency.
Standard Pay in 4 Stays Off Your Credit File
Sezzle’s basic plan splits a purchase into four interest-free installments over six weeks. Those transactions are not shared with any credit bureau. On-time payments won’t build your score, and a missed payment on a standard account won’t directly appear on your credit report either.
This is typical for buy now, pay later services. Short-term installment plans don’t function like traditional revolving credit, and Sezzle keeps them separate from the accounts bureaus track. For most shoppers, using Sezzle at checkout has no lasting effect on their credit file.
Sezzle Up Is the Opt-In That Changes This
Sezzle Up is a voluntary program that turns your Sezzle activity into a reported credit account. Once you enroll, Sezzle shares your payment history with all three major bureaus.1Sezzle Legal. Sezzle Up Terms Every payment is documented, which can help you build positive history over time.
To qualify, you need to pay off at least one Sezzle purchase in full and on time, set a bank account as your default payment method, and verify your identity by providing your Social Security number and confirming your personal information in the app. Credit reporting through Sezzle Up may require a Sezzle Anywhere subscription at $19.99 per month.2Sezzle Legal. Opting in means all of your payment behavior gets reported, not just the good stretches. That’s the trade.
What Happens When You Pay Late
If you’re enrolled in Sezzle Up and miss a payment, Sezzle reports it once the payment is 30 or more days overdue. The delinquency appears on the next monthly report after crossing that threshold and continues showing each month until it’s resolved.3Sezzle Help Center. How Does Sezzle Up Impact My Credit The longer the payment stays overdue, the more damage it does.
Once a late payment is reported, it can stay on your credit file for up to seven years from the date the delinquency began.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Sezzle Up accounts are treated the same as any other loan on your report once they’re there.
Charge-Offs and Collections Can Reach Anyone
Even if you never opted into Sezzle Up, your credit isn’t fully insulated. If you miss payments for more than 90 days, Sezzle charges off the account, blocks it from further use, and may send the debt to a third-party collection agency.5Sezzle Help Center. What Is a Charge-Off and Why Do I Still See a Balance With My Sezzle Account After My Account Was Charged-Off This applies to any unpaid Sezzle balance.
Once a collection agency takes over, that agency can independently report the debt to all three bureaus. A collection account can significantly lower your score and stays on your file for up to seven years from the original delinquency date. Paying it off may update the entry to “paid,” but the record of the delinquency itself remains for the full period.
Signing Up Doesn’t Ding Your Score
When you register with Sezzle or start a new purchase, the platform runs a soft credit inquiry to assess eligibility. Soft inquiries don’t affect your credit score and aren’t visible to other lenders reviewing your file. Approval is usually instant, and you only need a valid phone number and a payment method to apply.
Sezzle doesn’t publish a minimum credit score requirement. Because the check is a soft pull rather than a hard inquiry, you can see whether you qualify without any score impact.
What Lenders Actually See Right Now
Even if you enroll in Sezzle Up and build months of on-time payments, that history may not carry much weight yet. According to TransUnion, BNPL loan data reported to the bureau is currently visible only to the consumer on their own credit report; credit scoring models and lenders cannot use it when calculating scores or making lending decisions.6TransUnion. How Do BNPL Missed Payments Impact Your Credit Score
TransUnion has said BNPL data may be incorporated into scores and lending decisions in the future. The practical upside of Sezzle Up now is a documented history ready for when models catch up. The downside is symmetrical: any late payments reported through Sezzle Up would already be on your file if and when lenders start factoring them in.
Disputing Something That Shouldn’t Be There
If Sezzle Up reports inaccurate information — say, a payment marked late that you paid on time — you can dispute it directly with Sezzle. Submit a dispute through the Sezzle contact form, select the credit reporting category, and provide your Sezzle Credit Account number from your credit report along with your residential address.7Sezzle Help Center. How Do I Dispute Information on My Credit Report Sezzle will investigate and, if it confirms an error, correct the entry with the bureaus and provide a clarification letter for prospective creditors.
You also have a separate right under federal law to dispute inaccurate information directly with the credit bureau. The bureau must investigate within 30 days and remove or correct anything it cannot verify.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Filing with both Sezzle and the bureau at the same time can move the correction along faster.
