Sezzle runs a soft credit check, not a hard one, so signing up for Sezzle or checking out with it does not affect your credit score. The soft inquiry shows up only on the version of your credit report you can see yourself; lenders reviewing your file will not see it, and your FICO and VantageScore numbers stay put. The one exception is Sezzle Up, an optional feature that reports your payment activity to the credit bureaus. If you never opt in, Sezzle stays invisible to your credit.
Soft Inquiry vs. Hard Inquiry
Every time you apply for a Sezzle account or place an order, the company pulls a soft credit check to confirm your identity and gauge eligibility.1Sezzle Legal. Credit Pull Authorization A soft pull lets a company review limited credit information without triggering a score change. Only you can see it on your report.
A hard inquiry is the kind that happens when you apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or a new credit card. Hard inquiries can sit on your credit report for up to two years and typically shave a few points off your score. Sezzle states it does not run hard credit checks as part of its approval process.2Sezzle. Pay in 4 at Checks That is why the platform is often used by people who are still building credit or who want to keep their score untouched.
Federal law requires any company accessing your credit information to have a permissible purpose for doing so.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Sezzle’s soft pull meets that standard by verifying who you are and looking at your general financial profile, without the deeper review a traditional lender performs before extending credit.
How Sezzle Approves Orders Without a Hard Pull
Because Sezzle isn’t leaning on your credit score, it evaluates each order on its own. Getting approved for an account doesn’t guarantee every future purchase will clear. At checkout, Sezzle’s system weighs the order total against your current spending limit, your repayment history on prior Sezzle orders, and whether the payment method you have on file can cover the first 25 percent installment.4Sezzle Legal. Spending limits start low and rise as you build a track record of on-time payments inside Sezzle. An order that exceeds your internal limit will be declined even if your outside credit score is strong. The Pay in 4 plan splits the total into four equal, interest-free payments spaced two weeks apart over six weeks, with the first payment due at checkout.4Sezzle Legal. Opening Account Disclosure
Sign-up itself asks for a valid U.S. or Canadian phone number, a verified email, a payment method, and the last four digits of your Social Security number to confirm your identity.5Sezzle Legal. User Agreement None of that triggers a hard pull.
When Sezzle Does Report to Credit Bureaus
Regular Sezzle purchases are not reported to the credit bureaus at all. On-time payments won’t build your credit, and late payments won’t damage it. That changes if you opt into Sezzle Up.
To qualify for Sezzle Up, you need to pay off at least one Sezzle order on time, set a linked bank account as your default payment method, and verify your full Social Security number.1Sezzle Legal. Credit Pull Authorization Once enrolled, Sezzle reviews your account at the end of each month and reports your payment status to four U.S. bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion, Experian, and Innovis.6Sezzle. How Does Sezzle Up Impact My Credit
According to Sezzle, enrolled users have seen an average credit score increase of about 20 points within four months. The reporting works both ways, though. Payments more than 30 days overdue can also appear on your credit report and pull your score down. If your budget doesn’t reliably cover every installment on time, Sezzle Up carries real downside; if it does, it’s a way to turn the same purchases you were already making into positive credit history.
What Happens if You Miss a Payment
Outside of Sezzle Up, a missed payment won’t touch your credit report, but it will cost you in fees. Sezzle charges up to $6.95 as a failed payment fee when a scheduled charge cannot be processed, and up to $16.95 as a late fee if the balance stays overdue past the grace period, capped at 25 percent of the original order.4Sezzle Legal. Inside Sezzle Up, the same missed payment can hit both your wallet and your credit file once it crosses the 30-day mark. That’s the trade-off to weigh before opting in.
