Does Klarna Affect Your Credit Score and Report?

Whether Klarna affects your credit score depends on which Klarna product you use. The short-term plans — Pay in 4, Pay in 30, and the Klarna Card — are not reported to the credit bureaus, so on-time payments will not build your credit and routine use will not lower your score. Klarna’s longer-term monthly financing, called Pay over time, is a different story: it is reported to TransUnion and Experian as an installment loan, and it can help or hurt your score depending on how you handle it.1Klarna US. Does Signing Up for Klarna Hurt Your Score

No. When you pick a Klarna option at checkout, the company runs a soft credit check to decide whether to approve you. Klarna’s own documentation confirms this applies to Pay in 4, Pay in 30, Pay over time, and the Klarna Credit Card.2Klarna US. Does Klarna Perform a Credit Check and Will This Affect My Credit Score A soft inquiry is visible only to you when you pull your own report; other lenders do not see it, and it has no effect on your score.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry

That is different from the hard inquiry that comes with a credit card or auto loan application. A hard inquiry stays on your report for up to two years, though FICO only factors it in for the first 12 months, and the typical cost is fewer than five points.4Experian. Pay in 4 and Pay in 30: No Reporting Either Way

Klarna does not share any information with credit bureaus about Pay in 4, Pay in 30, pay-in-full purchases, or Klarna Card activity.1Klarna US. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus Because these accounts never touch your standard credit report, they cannot build credit history for you. Paying every installment on time will not raise your score, and the account contributes nothing to your credit mix or the average age of your accounts.

The other side of that coin: routine use of these short-term plans will not fill your report with small tradelines that could give future lenders pause. Think of Pay in 4 and Pay in 30 as cash-flow tools that split a purchase into smaller pieces, not as credit-building products. If building credit is the goal, you need a product that actually reports.

Pay Over Time: Reported Like a Regular Installment Loan

Klarna’s Pay over time product offers financing from 6 to 24 months at rates between 0.00% and 35.99% APR.6Klarna US. Pay Over Time With Klarna It functions as a formal installment loan, and Klarna reports these accounts to TransUnion and Experian.1Klarna US. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus

That reporting cuts both ways. Payment history is the single largest factor in your FICO score at 35%, so every on-time monthly payment builds a positive record. The account also adds to your credit mix, which makes up about 10% of the score, and having installment loans alongside revolving accounts tends to work in your favor.7myFICO. How Scores Are Calculated

One thing to watch: a large financing balance raises your debt-to-income ratio, which is not part of your FICO score but is something lenders look at closely when they underwrite a mortgage or other major loan. A Pay over time balance that is fine for your credit score can still complicate a mortgage application.

What Missing a Payment Does to Your Credit

The consequences of falling behind depend on which Klarna product you have and how far behind you get.

Late Fees First

Pay in 4 may charge a late fee if Klarna cannot collect after multiple attempts. Pay in 30 does not currently carry late fees, though terms can vary by order. Pay over time can incur both late fees and interest under your credit agreement.8Klarna US. What Happens If I Can’t Pay on Time Total late fees on a single order are capped at 25% of the purchase price.

Then Credit Report Damage

Once any account is 30 days past due, the lender can report the delinquency to the credit bureaus.9TransUnion. How Long Do Late Payments Stay on Your Credit Report A late payment stays on your report for seven years from the date you first fell behind.10Experian. When Do Late Payments Get Reported The first late payment usually causes the biggest score drop, especially if your credit was strong before, and moving to 60 or 90 days past due drives the score down further.

Only Pay over time gets reported during normal use, so if you miss a payment on Pay in 4 or Pay in 30, that specific late payment is not going onto your report. But if the debt stays unpaid long enough to be sent to collections, the collection account will appear on your credit report no matter which Klarna product it started as.

And Then Collections

Debts left unpaid for three to six months may be transferred or sold to a third-party collection agency. At that point the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act governs how the collector can contact you.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose Within five days of first contact, the collector must send a written notice stating the amount owed, the original creditor, and your right to dispute the debt within 30 days.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692g – Validation of Debts A collection account is a serious negative mark, can stay on your report for up to seven years, and makes qualifying for mortgages, auto loans, and competitive credit cards much harder.

If Klarna Reports Something Wrong

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a company that furnishes data to the credit bureaus cannot report information it knows to be inaccurate and must investigate after a consumer notifies it of an error.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681s-2 – Responsibilities of Furnishers of Information to Consumer Reporting Agencies You can file a dispute directly with Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, and the bureau has 30 days to investigate.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681 – Congressional Findings and Statement of Purpose You can also notify Klarna directly.

Errors worth checking for include a payment marked late when you paid on time, a balance higher than what you actually owe, and a closed account still showing as open. Pulling your report at least once a year through AnnualCreditReport.com — the federally authorized free source — is the simplest way to catch problems early.

One Boundary: BNPL Disputes Are Not Credit Card Disputes

If you are used to credit card protections, know that buy-now-pay-later purchases do not automatically come with federal chargeback rights or guaranteed refund timelines. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued an interpretive rule in 2024 that would have extended credit-card-style dispute protections to BNPL, but the agency withdrew it in May 2025.15Federal Register. Interpretive Rules, Policy Statements, and Advisory Opinions – Withdrawal Klarna offers its own buyer protection program covering undelivered or defective orders, with return support for 21 days after an item is sent back, but those are company policies rather than statutory rights. For a high-value purchase where dispute protection matters, a credit card gives you stronger federal coverage.
