Does Getting Prequalified Hurt Your Credit Score?

Getting prequalified for a loan or credit card does not hurt your credit score. Prequalification runs through a soft credit inquiry, and soft inquiries are excluded from both FICO and VantageScore calculations. You can check prequalified offers from several lenders in the same afternoon and your score will not move a point.1myFICO. Do Credit Inquiries Lower Your FICO Score?

Why a Soft Inquiry Doesn’t Count

When a lender prequalifies you, it pulls a filtered view of your credit through what the industry calls a soft inquiry. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau groups these with employer background checks and your own credit-report reviews, none of which affect scores.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry?

The reason is straightforward: you haven’t submitted a formal application, so the scoring model has no risk signal to weigh. FICO and VantageScore both leave soft inquiries out of the formula entirely.1myFICO. Do Credit Inquiries Lower Your FICO Score?

Lenders use this soft pull on purpose. It lets them screen candidates before pushing them into a full application, which spares you from stacking up hard inquiries chasing products you were never likely to get.

When Your Score Actually Takes a Hit

The soft inquiry converts to a hard inquiry only when you take a separate, deliberate step: submitting a formal application. Clicking “check my rate” on a prequalification tool is not that step. The hard pull happens later, when you pick a lender and authorize the full application.

A single hard inquiry typically lowers your FICO score by fewer than five points, and the effect usually fades within a few months. Hard inquiries stay on your credit report for two years, but FICO only factors in those from the prior 12 months. VantageScore can consider hard inquiries across the full 24-month window.3Experian. Rate Shopping Windows

If you apply to several lenders for the same type of loan, both major scoring models bundle those hard inquiries together and count them as a single event, provided you finish your shopping inside a set window.

  • Older FICO formulas bundle inquiries within 14 days.
  • Newer FICO formulas stretch the window to 45 days and ignore mortgage, auto, and student loan inquiries made in the 30 days before scoring.1myFICO. Do Credit Inquiries Lower Your FICO Score?
  • VantageScore 4.0 bundles inquiries within a 14-day window.4VantageScore. Lender FAQs

These protections apply only to hard inquiries for the same loan type. A mortgage application and a credit card application in the same week generate two separate hard inquiries, scored individually.

Prequalification vs. Preapproval

The two words sound close but carry different credit consequences, and that’s where a lot of the confusion about score damage comes from.

Prequalification is based on self-reported information like your income and estimated debts. The lender runs a soft inquiry and gives you a preliminary estimate of what you could borrow. No documents are verified at this stage.5Equifax. What Is the Difference Between Pre-Qualified and Pre-Approved Loans?

Preapproval requires verified documentation — pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, identification — and typically triggers a hard inquiry that can temporarily lower your score.5Equifax. What Is the Difference Between Pre-Qualified and Pre-Approved Loans?

Neither one is a guaranteed loan. The CFPB notes that both letters specify how much a lender is willing to lend up to a certain amount, based on certain assumptions, and the lender can still decline your final application.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What’s the Difference Between a Prequalification Letter and a Preapproval Letter For mortgage shopping, sellers give more weight to a preapproval letter because the lender has already verified the finances behind it.

Who Can See a Prequalification on Your Report

Soft inquiries from prequalification are visible only to you when you pull your own credit report. Other lenders, landlords, and creditors who check your file cannot see them and cannot factor them into their decisions.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry? Shopping around does not signal to other lenders that you are looking for credit.

One narrow exception: TransUnion notes that companies within the same industry, such as two insurance companies, may be able to see soft inquiries associated with that specific industry on your report. That cross-visibility does not extend to lending inquiries in general.7TransUnion. What Is a Soft Inquiry

A Prequalification Is Not an Approval

A prequalification offer is an estimate. Because it rests on self-reported information and a limited credit check, the lender has not verified your full financial picture, and several changes between prequalification and the formal application can lead to a denial:

  • Your income drops or you switch jobs and no longer meet the lender’s requirements.
  • You take on new debt that pushes your debt-to-income ratio past the lender’s threshold.
  • Your score falls after a missed payment, a closed account, or a credit limit reduction.
  • Documentation problems appear: paperwork errors, unexplained large deposits, or discrepancies between what you reported and what your documents show.
  • On a mortgage, the home appraises for less than the loan amount.

Between prequalification and the formal application, the safest posture is to leave your credit profile alone. Don’t open new accounts, don’t finance large purchases, and don’t change jobs if you can avoid it. The prequalification itself costs you nothing on your score; the application that follows is where the numbers actually move.
