Yes, FAFSA does cover cosmetology school, as long as the school participates in the federal Title IV aid program and your specific program meets minimum length requirements. Qualifying students can receive up to $7,395 a year in Pell Grant funding, plus Direct Loans and sometimes Federal Work-Study.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts The catch is that not every beauty school qualifies, and shorter programs are limited to loans only.
Check Whether the School Participates in Federal Aid
Before anything else, confirm the school is approved by the U.S. Department of Education to distribute Title IV funds.2Federal Student Aid Handbook. Volume 2, Chapter 1 – Institutional Eligibility The quickest way is to search for the school’s Federal School Code on studentaid.gov. If the school appears, it participates; if it does not, you cannot receive federal grants or loans there, no matter how well you qualify personally.3Federal Student Aid. What Is a Federal School Code, and How Do I Find It?
To hold Title IV status, a beauty school must be accredited by a nationally recognized agency, authorized by its state, and approved by the Department of Education. Most are accredited through the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), which the Department recognizes specifically for cosmetology programs.4U.S. Department of Education. Institutional Accrediting Agencies Verify participation before you sign an enrollment agreement.
Program Length Determines Which Aid You Can Get
Even at a participating school, federal aid depends on how long your specific program runs in clock hours.2Federal Student Aid Handbook. Volume 2, Chapter 1 – Institutional Eligibility
- Programs of 600 or more clock hours (at least 15 weeks) qualify for the full range of federal aid: Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and Federal Work-Study. Most full cosmetology programs land here, since state licensing typically requires 1,000 to 1,600 hours of training.
- Programs of 300 to 599 clock hours (at least 10 weeks) qualify only for Direct Loans. Some shorter specialty tracks like nail technology or esthetics fall in this range.
- Programs under 300 clock hours do not qualify for any federal student aid.
Cosmetology programs also have to meet federal “gainful employment” standards to keep their Title IV eligibility. The Department of Education tracks whether graduates earn more than the typical high school graduate in the state and whether their debt is manageable relative to earnings. A program that fails either test in two out of three consecutive years loses eligibility to accept federal aid.5Federal Register. Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment
What Federal Aid Is Actually Available
Pell Grants
Pell Grants are the most valuable piece because you never repay them. For both the 2025–26 and 2026–27 award years, the maximum award is $7,395 and the minimum is $740.1Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts Your actual amount depends on your Student Aid Index, your enrollment status, and the school’s cost of attendance. If your Student Aid Index exceeds $14,790, you are not Pell-eligible. Pell requires a program of 600 or more clock hours.
Pell also has a lifetime cap. Eligibility is tracked as “Lifetime Eligibility Used,” and once you hit 600% (about six full-time years), you cannot receive any more Pell funding, even at a new school.6Federal Student Aid Handbook. Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU)
Direct Loans
Direct Loans come in subsidized and unsubsidized versions. Subsidized loans are based on need, and the government pays the interest while you are enrolled at least half-time. Unsubsidized loans are open to any eligible student, but interest starts accruing at disbursement.7Federal Student Aid. Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
First-year annual borrowing limits:
- Dependent students: up to $5,500 total, with no more than $3,500 subsidized.
- Independent students: up to $9,500 total, with no more than $3,500 subsidized.
Lifetime aggregate limits are $31,000 for dependent undergraduates and $57,500 for independent undergraduates, with subsidized loans capped at $23,000 of either total. Any federal loans from previous education count toward these ceilings.7Federal Student Aid. Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study offers part-time jobs to students with financial need. Proprietary and vocational schools, which include many beauty schools, are eligible to participate, but not all of them do. Ask the financial aid office whether positions are available.8Federal Student Aid Handbook. The Federal Work-Study Program
Will FAFSA Cover the Full Cost?
Usually not. A full cosmetology program typically runs $15,000 to $20,000 once you factor in tuition, the student supply kit, and state licensing fees. Costs vary by program length and location. Between a maximum Pell of $7,395 and first-year loan limits of $5,500 to $9,500, federal aid often covers a large share of the total but leaves a gap. Students commonly close it with the school’s payment plan, state-level grants or scholarships, or personal savings. Ask for an itemized breakdown of program costs before you enroll, and compare it against the aid offer you receive.
Your Personal Eligibility
Even at a fully qualifying school, you have to meet the standard federal aid requirements:9Federal Student Aid. Chapter 1 School-Determined Requirements
- A high school diploma, GED, HiSET, or another state-recognized equivalent.
- U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status.
- A Social Security number.
- Selective Service registration, if you are a male between 18 and 25 and required to register.
Drug convictions no longer affect federal aid eligibility; that restriction was removed as of July 2023.10Federal Student Aid. Eligibility for Students With Criminal Convictions
Your dependency status controls whose financial information the FAFSA asks for. You are automatically independent if you were born before January 1, 2002 (for the 2025–26 form), are married, are a veteran or active-duty service member, have legal dependents other than a spouse, or were a foster youth, ward of the court, or legally emancipated minor.11Federal Student Aid. Independent Student Independent students generally qualify for the higher loan limits shown above.
Filing the FAFSA
File the FAFSA online at studentaid.gov. You and any contributor (usually a parent, if you are a dependent student) each create an FSA ID, which functions as your electronic signature. The form pulls tax data from two years before the award year, so the 2026–27 FAFSA uses 2024 tax information.12Federal Student Aid. Did You File, or Will You File, an IRS Form 1040 or 1040-NR? You and each contributor must consent to the direct IRS data transfer; without that consent, you are not eligible for federal student aid.13Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Checklist: What Students Need
After you submit, the system produces a Student Aid Index (SAI), which replaced the older Expected Family Contribution. The schools you list receive your SAI and build a financial aid offer around it and their cost of attendance.14U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility Guide
Deadlines
The 2026–27 FAFSA opened in September 2025, earlier than the traditional October 1 launch.15U.S. Department of Education. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Many beauty schools set earlier priority deadlines, and filing sooner improves your chance of receiving the full aid you qualify for. Check with your school’s financial aid office for its specific date.
If Your School Closes or Misled You
The beauty industry has seen a number of school closures, and federal law offers specific protections. If your cosmetology school closes while you are enrolled, or within 180 days after you withdraw, you may qualify for a full discharge of the federal loans tied to that program.17Federal Student Aid. Closed School Discharge You are not eligible if you completed all coursework before the closure or transferred into a comparable program elsewhere.
If the school made misleading claims that influenced your decision to enroll, such as inflated job placement numbers or false promises about licensing, you may be able to apply for borrower defense discharge. You have to document the conduct and show it caused financial harm; if approved, the federal Direct Loans tied to that program can be forgiven.18Federal Student Aid. Borrower Defense Neither protection applies to private student loans.
