Yes, Cash App does hold funds, and it happens for four main reasons: incomplete identity verification, an automated security or fraud review, normal bank processing time on a standard cash-out, or a violation of the platform’s rules. Routine holds usually clear within one to three business days. A security investigation can take longer, and a policy-related freeze can last until Cash App finishes its review, which sometimes ends in permanent account closure.
Which reason applies to you determines what you can do about it, so start by matching your situation to one of the categories below.
Standard Cash-Out Delays Are Not a Hold
When you move money from your Cash App balance to a linked bank account, you choose between two speeds. A standard transfer is free and arrives in one to three business days.1Cash App. Cash App Terms of Service – Section: Transfer Out That wait is the Automated Clearing House network doing its normal batch processing, not Cash App restricting your money. Weekends, holidays, and bank cutoff times stretch the timeline further.
If you need the money now, an instant transfer to a linked debit card arrives within minutes. The fee runs between 0.5% and 2.5% of the transfer amount, with a minimum between $0.25 and $1.00 and a cap of $75.2Cash App. Withdrawal Transfer Speed Options
Pending Payments Waiting on the Other Person
A payment that shows as “pending” usually means the recipient still needs to do something on their end, such as finish identity verification or confirm their account. If the required step is not completed within 24 hours, the payment cancels automatically and the money returns to the sender.3Cash App. Payment Pending Pending is not the same as frozen.
Identity Verification Holds
Cash App is a money services business, and federal anti-money laundering rules require it to verify who its users are.4eCFR. 31 CFR 1022.210 – Anti-Money Laundering Programs for Money Services Businesses Until you complete verification, your account stays restricted. Incoming funds may sit inaccessible, and your ability to send or withdraw is capped.
Unverified accounts can send and receive up to $1,000 over a rolling 30-day period, with a total balance cap of $1,500. Any transaction that would push you past those limits will fail or be held.5Cash App. Account Limits Verified accounts can send up to $40,000 in a rolling 30-day period and carry an unlimited balance.
To verify, Cash App asks for your legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number or ITIN. It may also request your full SSN or ITIN, residential address, a government-issued photo ID, or proof of income.6Cash App. Why Do I Need to Verify My Identity (ID Verification)? You enter the information in the app’s settings, and Cash App checks it against public records and government databases. If your money is held because of unverified status, completing verification is the fix.
Security and Fraud Review Holds
Cash App’s automated systems watch transactions for patterns that suggest fraud. Common triggers include rapid movement of unusually large amounts, logins from an unrecognized device, and payments touching accounts previously linked to suspicious activity. When something trips the system, Cash App places a temporary hold on the funds while it reviews whether you actually authorized the transfer. During that window, the flagged money cannot be sent or withdrawn.
Cash App does not publish exact review timelines, so a security hold can last anywhere from a few hours to several days depending on what needs to be checked. If the review clears, the hold lifts. If it does not, the funds may be returned to the sender or the account may face further restrictions.
Terms of Service Violations and Full Account Freezes
A more serious kind of hold happens when Cash App decides you have violated its Acceptable Use Policy. In that case, the entire balance can be frozen until Cash App finishes investigating. The outcome can be release of the funds, reversal of the transactions, or permanent closure of the account.
The prohibited-activity list is broad and includes illegal substances and drug paraphernalia, adult content and escort services, counterfeit or stolen goods, weapons and explosives, tobacco and cannabis products, pyramid and multi-level marketing schemes, unproven health products, and deceptive financial offerings.7Cash App. Acceptable Use Policy Cash App also reserves discretion to flag any business it treats as high-risk. Using a personal account for high-volume commercial payments is a common trigger even when the underlying activity is legal.
