Yes, Cash App does ask for your Social Security number, but only inside the app itself and only once you try to do more than send or receive small amounts. The request is legitimate: federal law treats Cash App like a bank for identity purposes, so it has to confirm who you are before unlocking features like the Cash Card, direct deposit, Bitcoin or stock trading, or higher transaction limits. Any request for your SSN that comes by phone, text, email, or social media is a scam, no matter who the sender claims to be.
When the App Actually Asks
A new Cash App account works on a limited basis without an SSN. You can send and receive a combined total of up to $1,000 in any rolling 30-day period, with a $1,500 lifetime cap on unverified accounts. Most people hit the prompt fairly quickly, because verification is required for almost anything beyond casual peer-to-peer transfers:
- Buying Bitcoin or stocks through the app
- Ordering the physical Cash Card
- Raising your sending or receiving limits
- Setting up direct deposit for a paycheck
The first prompt usually asks for the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN. Depending on the feature and whether the initial check succeeds, Cash App may follow up asking for the full nine-digit number, a residential address, an unexpired government-issued photo ID, or income information.
Cash App for Business accounts have a separate ask. Because the platform files tax paperwork with the IRS on your behalf, it needs a tax identification number, which can be your SSN, ITIN, or an Employer Identification Number depending on how your business is set up.
Why Cash App Is Required to Ask
Cash App is classified as a money services business, which puts it under the same identity rules that apply to banks. Two federal laws drive the request.
The Bank Secrecy Act requires every money services business to run an anti-money laundering program, and its implementing regulations require the business to collect identifying information from users, including name, date of birth, address, and an identification number such as an SSN. The USA PATRIOT Act layered on a Customer Identification Program requirement, codified at 31 U.S.C. ยง 5318, that requires financial institutions to verify a customer’s identity when an account is opened. Together these rules are commonly called Know Your Customer requirements. A money services business that fails to comply faces civil penalties of $5,000 per violation and can lose its ability to operate.
So the ask is not a Cash App policy choice. Any comparable payment app operating in the United States has to do the same thing.
What You’ll Need Ready
Before you start verification, have this on hand:
- Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government ID
- Your date of birth
- Your SSN or ITIN (last four digits at minimum, possibly the full number)
- An unexpired driver’s license, state ID, or passport
After you submit, the app shows a pending status. Review can take anywhere from a few hours to several business days. Once it clears, the verification section reads “Verified” and the full feature set opens up.
If You Don’t Have an SSN
An ITIN works in place of an SSN. If you have neither, Cash App allows verification through other means, such as a government-issued ID on its own. That path lets noncitizens and others without an SSN still reach the verified features.
How to Tell a Real Request From a Scam
The single rule worth memorizing: Cash App will only ask for your SSN or ITIN inside the Cash App mobile application. Cash App representatives will never ask for your Social Security number by phone call, email, text, or social media message. If a message asks you to “confirm” or “reverify” your SSN through a link, a form, or a phone conversation, it is a scam.
Real Cash App support may ask for basic identifying details, like your legal name, email, phone number, or the last few digits of a linked bank card, to confirm they’re helping the right person. They will never ask, through any channel outside the app, for:
- Your full debit card number or PIN
- Your bank account number
- A sign-in code
- Your Social Security number
To reach genuine support, open the app, tap the profile icon, and select Support, or call 1-800-969-1940. Anything routed differently should be treated as untrusted.
What Happens If You Don’t Verify
You are not required to verify, but the account stays capped. Unverified users are held to the $1,000 rolling 30-day sending and receiving total and the $1,500 lifetime cap. That makes the account impractical for rent, recurring bills, or any small-business use.
Verified accounts can send up to $40,000 on a rolling 30-day basis, with receiving limits set individually and visible under the Limits tab in account settings. Verification also unlocks an unlimited Cash App balance, the Cash Card, and Bitcoin and stock trading.
Refusing to cooperate has one other consequence worth knowing. Cash App’s Terms of Service reserve the right to downgrade, suspend, or terminate accounts that provide inaccurate or incomplete information, and users agree not to refuse identity confirmation requests when they create the account. So the practical choice is verify and use the app fully, or stay under the unverified caps and accept the limits.
