Does Afterpay Run Credit Checks and Affect Your Score?

Using Afterpay does not directly affect your credit score in most situations. The company runs only a soft credit check when you sign up or check out, and it does not report your account activity or on-time payments to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion.1Afterpay Help Center. Does Afterpay Conduct Credit Checks? The exception is serious: if you stop paying and the debt is handed to a collection agency, that collection can land on your credit report and stay there for up to seven years.

The Soft Check at Signup and Checkout

Afterpay runs a soft credit inquiry when you create an account and when you start a new purchase. A soft inquiry does not lower your score and is visible only to you on your credit report; other lenders, landlords, and employers cannot see it.2TransUnion. What Is a Soft Inquiry That is the key difference from a hard inquiry, which can drop your score by a few points and stays visible to other creditors for up to two years.3Equifax. Hard Inquiry vs Soft Inquiry: Whats the Difference?

Federal law requires any company pulling your credit file to have a permissible purpose. The Fair Credit Reporting Act includes evaluating a credit transaction you initiated as a consumer, which is the basis Afterpay uses at checkout.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports The soft pull lets Afterpay approve or decline the purchase without creating the permanent record a traditional loan application would leave behind.

Why On-Time Payments Won’t Build Your Credit

The soft-check policy has a flip side. Afterpay does not send positive payment data to the three major credit bureaus, so paying every installment on time will not raise your score. The company has said it will not begin reporting until it sees evidence that buy-now-pay-later data helps rather than hurts customer scores.1Afterpay Help Center. Does Afterpay Conduct Credit Checks? Even a multi-year record of on-time Afterpay orders will not appear on your credit report.

Other parts of the buy-now-pay-later industry are moving. Equifax has built a framework for reporting BNPL loans, and some other providers have started reporting to one or more bureaus.5Equifax. What is Afterpay, Klarna and Affirm? How Buy Now, Pay Later Impacts Your Credit Afterpay has not adopted this approach for U.S. customers. If building credit is your goal, Afterpay is not the tool.

How a Missed Payment Can Hurt Your Score

The first consequence of a missed installment is a late fee, not a credit hit. Afterpay caps these fees based on your order size:

  • On orders of $40 or less, a single late fee of up to 25% of the order value. A $20 order can generate at most a $5 fee.
  • On orders over $40, an initial $10 late fee, plus $7 more if the payment is still unpaid after seven days. Total late fees on a single order are capped at 25% of the order value or $68, whichever is lower.

Afterpay charges no interest on its standard Pay in 4 product, so late fees are the only direct penalty. The platform will also block new purchases while you have overdue payments. If you know a payment will be tight, the app sometimes lets you reschedule an installment before it becomes overdue, though that option is limited.

The credit-score risk starts if you stop paying entirely. Afterpay first tries to collect internally through reminders and notifications. After roughly 60 to 90 days of non-payment, the company may transfer the balance to a third-party collection agency, and the debt leaves Afterpay’s control.

Collection agencies operating in the U.S. are regulated by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which restricts how and when they can contact you and prohibits harassment or deceptive practices.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Laws Limit What Debt Collectors Can Say or Do? Before a collector can report the debt to a credit bureau, it must first either speak with you about the debt by phone or in person, or send you a written or electronic notice and wait at least 14 days for any undeliverability notification.7FDIC. VII-3 Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

Once a collection item is reported, it can remain on your credit file for up to seven years. The clock starts 180 days after the date you first became delinquent on the original Afterpay order, not from the date the debt was sent to collections.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports An unpaid order of $50 or $100 can therefore leave a mark on your credit file that outlasts the debt itself by years.

Pay Monthly Uses the Same Soft Check

Afterpay’s longer-term product, Pay Monthly, spreads purchases over 3, 6, 12, or 24 months depending on the order value and merchant. It also uses a soft credit check during approval, so applying for it will not affect your score either.9Afterpay. How Afterpay’s Pay Monthly Works

The cost picture is different, though. Pay Monthly carries an annual percentage rate that can range from 0% to 35.99% based on your eligibility and the merchant. A $1,000 loan at 21% APR over 12 months would cost roughly $1,117 in total payments.10Afterpay. Pay Monthly The interest does not affect your credit score, but it changes the math on whether the purchase makes sense.

One Indirect Way Afterpay Can Still Cost You Points

Afterpay lets you link a debit card, a credit card, or a bank checking account to your account.11Afterpay Help Center. Adding a Bank Account If you use a credit card, each installment charges against your credit line the same way any other purchase does. Carry a balance on that card and your issuer will charge its regular interest rate on those installments, and heavy Afterpay use can push up your credit utilization, which is one of the factors your score is built on. Afterpay itself is not reporting anything to the bureaus in that scenario; your credit card issuer is doing what it always does.
