Does Afterpay Report to Credit Bureaus? Missed Payments and Collections

Afterpay does not report to credit bureaus for its standard Pay in 4 purchases, so on-time installments won’t appear on your credit report and won’t help or hurt your score. The exception is unpaid debt: if you fall far enough behind, Afterpay can send the balance to a third-party collection agency, and collection agencies do report to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. That kind of entry can stay on your credit report for up to seven years.

On-Time Afterpay Payments Don’t Show Up Anywhere

Afterpay has chosen not to share payment data with the three major credit bureaus. The company has said it will not begin reporting until it has evidence that doing so would not unfairly penalize its customers, a standard it says the current scoring system doesn’t yet meet. Klarna has taken the same position. Affirm has moved the other way and started furnishing loan data.1Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Buy Now, Pay Later: Recent Developments and Implications

Because Afterpay keeps its records internal, every successful installment you pay is invisible to other lenders. A long history of paying Afterpay on time cannot be used to demonstrate creditworthiness when you apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or credit card. Afterpay does track your reliability, but only to adjust the spending limit it offers you inside its own app.1Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. If your goal is to build credit from scratch, Afterpay is the wrong tool. A secured credit card, a credit-builder loan, or one of the BNPL services further down this page would do that job, because those products report your payments to the bureaus.

Does Applying for Afterpay Affect Your Credit Score?

The answer depends on which Afterpay product you’re using.

Pay in 4

The standard Pay in 4 plan splits your purchase into four interest-free installments over about six weeks. When you sign up or place an order, Afterpay runs a soft credit inquiry. Soft inquiries are visible only to you on your own credit report and don’t affect your score.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry?

Pay Monthly

Pay Monthly is Afterpay’s longer-term product for larger purchases. Afterpay’s website states that Pay Monthly loans are “subject to credit check and approval.”3Afterpay. Pay Monthly The company doesn’t spell out whether the check is soft or hard, but a full credit review for a longer-term loan is typically a hard pull, which can shave a few points off your score temporarily and stay visible to other lenders for up to two years. Read the terms carefully before you apply.

What Happens If You Miss an Afterpay Payment

Missing a payment doesn’t hit your credit right away. Several things happen first, and each stage gives you a chance to fix the problem before it reaches your credit file.

For Pay in 4 orders, Afterpay charges a late fee if the payment isn’t made within 10 days of the due date. The fee can be up to $8 per missed installment, and total late fees on a single order are capped at 25% of the purchase price. On a $100 order, that ceiling is $25 no matter how many installments you miss. Pay Monthly plans don’t carry late fees.

As soon as your account is overdue, Afterpay freezes new purchases. You won’t be able to place another order until you catch up, and your spending limit may shrink even after you do. If you know you’re going to struggle, contacting Afterpay before things escalate is worth doing. The company may adjust your payment schedule, waive late fees, or set up a modified plan.

When an Unpaid Balance Goes to Collections

If your balance stays unpaid, Afterpay may transfer the debt to a third-party collection agency. That’s the point where your credit is affected. Collection agencies operate under different rules from Afterpay and routinely report unpaid balances to the bureaus.

A collection entry can cause a sharp drop in your score, and the drop tends to be steepest when your score was high to start with. The damage fades over time, but the entry itself can remain on your credit report for up to seven years. Under federal law, that seven-year clock starts 180 days after your payments first became delinquent, not the date the account was handed off to collections.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports

You have protections once a collector gets involved. The agency must send a written validation notice within five days of first contacting you, listing the amount owed and the original creditor. You then have 30 days to dispute the debt in writing. If you do, the collector must verify it before continuing to pursue you.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692g – Validation of Debts

How to Fix an Afterpay Collection Error on Your Credit Report

If an Afterpay-related collection shows up on your credit report and you believe it’s wrong—you already paid, never owed the balance, or the amount is inflated—the Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you challenge it directly with the credit bureau reporting it.

Pull your credit report from each of the three bureaus to see exactly which one is showing the entry. Gather documentation: bank statements showing the payment, screenshots of your Afterpay account with a zero balance, or an account closure confirmation. Submit the dispute through the bureau’s online portal or by mail, explaining the error and attaching copies of your evidence. The bureau must investigate within 30 days, and if it can’t verify the information, the entry must be removed.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy

BNPL Alternatives That Do Report to Credit Bureaus

If you want your installment payments to build credit history, a few of Afterpay’s competitors have started reporting.

Affirm began reporting all of its pay-over-time loans, including its Pay in 4 and longer monthly installment products, to TransUnion on May 1, 2025. These transactions are not yet factored into traditional credit scores or visible to lenders reviewing your file, so the near-term credit-building benefit is limited.7TransUnion. Sezzle offers credit bureau reporting through its Sezzle Anywhere program, but you have to opt in. Standard Sezzle transactions are not reported by default.1Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Buy Now, Pay Later: Recent Developments and Implications

The tradeoff cuts both ways. Once payments are being reported, a single missed installment lands on your credit file the same way the on-time ones do. Opt in only if you’re confident you’ll keep up with every payment.
