Does Acima Report to Credit Bureaus? Specialty Reports and Score Impact

Acima does not report routine lease payments to the three major credit bureaus, so on-time payments won’t build your traditional Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion credit history. It does share payment data with specialty consumer reporting agencies, and if you stop paying and the account goes to collections, that collection entry can land on your standard credit report and drag your score down for years.

Why Routine Acima Payments Don’t Show Up on Your Credit Report

Acima structures its product as a lease, not a loan or a line of credit. Acima buys the merchandise from the retailer and leases it to you, which is a different transaction from borrowing money.1Acima. Lease Agreements Because of that structure, Acima doesn’t furnish payment history to the big three the way a credit card issuer or auto lender would. Your lease payments, on time or a few days late, don’t appear on a standard credit report and don’t move your FICO or VantageScore.

The upside is that a rough patch with an Acima lease won’t automatically bruise your credit. The downside is that faithfully paying an Acima lease for a year or two won’t help you build one either.

When an Acima Account Can Hurt Your Credit

The picture changes if you stop paying entirely. When an Acima account becomes severely delinquent, the debt can be referred to a third-party collection agency. Once that happens, the collection agency can report the unpaid balance to the major credit bureaus, and the entry will sit on your report like any other collection.

Federal law caps how long it can stay. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a consumer reporting agency may not include a collection account that is more than seven years old.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports The clock doesn’t start on the day the debt went to collections. It starts 180 days after you first became delinquent on the original account, so a collection entry can remain visible for roughly seven years and six months from that first missed payment.

If you want to walk away from the merchandise, returning it is the safer move. You can return the item in good condition at any time and cancel the lease without penalty.3Acima. Acima Leasing: What You Need to Know About Lease-to-Own You won’t get back the payments you’ve already made, but the account closes cleanly. Simply stopping payments without returning the item is what puts your credit at risk.

Specialty Consumer Reporting Agencies

Even though your Acima lease stays off traditional reports, the activity does get shared with specialty consumer reporting agencies. One of the main ones is Clarity Services, which handles non-traditional financial data used by alternative lenders and lease-to-own companies. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists Clarity as a nationwide specialty consumer reporting company.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Clarity Services, Inc.

The information shared typically includes when the lease started, the total lease obligation, whether each payment arrived on time, amounts paid, and dates of any late payments. When the lease ends, whether through completion, early buyout, or return, the final status is recorded too.

These reports matter because other lease-to-own companies, subprime lenders, and some landlords pull them when they evaluate applications. A clean payment history with Acima can make future approvals easier in that world; missed payments can make them harder.

How to Check and Dispute Your Specialty Report

You have the right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to a free copy of your specialty credit report once every twelve months. For your Clarity Services report, you can visit clarityservices.com, call 866-390-3118 and choose option 4 for report requests, or mail Clarity Services, Inc., Consumer Support Division, P.O. Box 16, Allen, TX 75013.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Clarity Services, Inc.

If something on the report is wrong, the dispute process mirrors what you’d do with a major bureau. Submit the dispute online, by phone, or by mail. Under the FCRA, the agency generally has 30 days to investigate, and up to 45 days in certain circumstances. Information that can’t be verified within that window must come off the report.

Does Applying to Acima Affect Your Credit Score?

Applying for an Acima lease triggers a soft credit inquiry rather than a hard pull. A soft inquiry lets Acima review your financial profile without the check being visible to other lenders on your standard credit report, so applying won’t cause the small score dip that a hard inquiry from a traditional credit application can.

Federal law lets a business pull a consumer report when the consumer initiates the transaction and the business has a legitimate need for the information.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Because Acima uses a soft pull, shopping around for a lease-to-own option won’t get in the way of qualifying for other credit later, whether that’s a mortgage, a car loan, or a new credit card.
