Traditional wire transfers do not process on weekends. The Fedwire Funds Service, the Federal Reserve network that actually moves money between banks for wire transfers, is closed every Saturday, every Sunday, and on federal holidays observed by the Reserve Banks.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours You can still submit a wire request through your bank’s website or app on a Saturday or Sunday, but the funds won’t begin moving until the next business day the system reopens — usually Monday morning.
Why the Weekend Stops a Wire
When your bank sends a wire, it doesn’t hand cash to the receiving bank. It sends a payment order through Fedwire, and the Federal Reserve immediately and irrevocably moves the funds between the two banks’ accounts held at the Fed. A second network, CHIPS (the Clearing House Interbank Payments System), handles a large share of domestic and cross-border dollar transactions through a similar process.2Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours Both systems shut down on weekends and holidays. Individual banks have no independent way to settle high-value payments between institutions without them.
On regular business days, Fedwire opens at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time the evening before and closes at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time — a 22-hour window.1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours Outside those hours, and all through the weekend, nothing settles. Regulation J (12 CFR Part 210, Subpart B) sets the legal framework for banks sending and receiving payment orders through the system.3eCFR. 12 CFR Part 210 Subpart B – Funds Transfers Through the Fedwire Funds Service
What Happens to a Wire You Submit on a Saturday or Sunday
Your bank will accept the request and queue it. When Fedwire reopens Monday morning, the wire enters processing based on your bank’s own cut-off time. Most banks set daily deadlines for same-day wire processing between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time for domestic wires. A wire request received before that cut-off typically settles the same business day, often within minutes once Fedwire handles it. Submitted after cut-off, it slides to the next business day.
The practical result: a wire submitted any time between Friday evening and Sunday night won’t begin processing until Monday morning. If Monday is a federal holiday, it moves to Tuesday. A Friday-evening submission ahead of a three-day weekend can sit idle for three or four calendar days before the funds move.
Once the wire does settle, federal law requires the receiving bank to make the funds available no later than the next business day after the business day of receipt. This comes from the Expedited Funds Availability Act and Regulation CC.4Federal Reserve. Regulation CC Most banks credit incoming domestic wires the same day they arrive, but next-business-day availability is the legal floor.
Federal Reserve Holidays That Also Block Settlement
Beyond every Saturday and Sunday, the Fed closes on these 2026 holidays, and no wires settle on them:1Federal Reserve Financial Services. Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours

Canceling a Wire Before Monday Morning
The weekend gap can work in your favor if you catch a mistake. Because your wire request sits unprocessed until the next business day, you have a window to cancel or amend it before the funds move. Under the Uniform Commercial Code (adopted in every state), a cancellation is effective as long as the bank receives it in time to act before it accepts or executes the payment order.6Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order If the wire hasn’t gone to Fedwire yet — which it can’t have over a weekend — cancellation should succeed.
Banks vary widely in how they handle these requests in practice. Many require you to call during business hours to cancel, and some charge a fee for the attempt. Others warn that once a request is received, they may not be able to stop it and won’t guarantee success. If the wire has already been accepted and sent Monday morning by the time you call, your only recourse is to ask your bank to attempt a recall from the receiving institution, which the other bank can decline. Verify recipient name, account number, and routing details before you authorize a wire, especially for large transactions such as real estate closings where wire fraud targeting buyers is a documented risk.
As a legal backstop, an unaccepted payment order cancels automatically at the close of the fifth business day after its scheduled execution date.6Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order That prevents stale requests from executing weeks later, but it doesn’t help if your wire goes out on schedule Monday morning.
Instant Payment Alternatives That Do Work on Weekends
If you need money to arrive on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, two newer networks bypass the Fedwire shutdown. Both settle in seconds, every day of the year.
FedNow Service
Launched by the Federal Reserve in 2023, FedNow processes instant payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with each business day flowing continuously into the next.7Federal Reserve. FedNow Service Operating Hours Funds settle immediately and irrevocably. As of early 2026, roughly 1,637 financial institutions participate, and the per-transaction limit is $10 million.8Federal Reserve Financial Services. Announcing 2026 Federal Reserve Financial Services Fees Some participating institutions only receive instant payments and don’t yet send them, so check with your bank on both directions.
Real-Time Payments (RTP) Network
The RTP network, operated by The Clearing House, also clears and settles in seconds, 24/7/365, with immediate confirmation.9The Clearing House. Cash Flow Needs from Consumers and Businesses Drive New RTP Network Volume and Value Records The per-transaction limit is also $10 million. As with FedNow, both the sending and the receiving institution must participate.
Where Instant Payments Don’t Replace a Wire
FedNow and RTP cap at $10 million per transaction. Traditional Fedwire handles individual transfers up to just under $10 billion and remains the standard for high-value transactions such as real estate closings and securities settlements.2Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours For payments under the instant-network ceiling, and when both banks participate, FedNow or RTP solves the weekend problem entirely.
A Coming Change to Weekend Wires
The Federal Reserve announced in 2025 that it plans to expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service operating hours to every day of the week, including Sundays and holidays, keeping the same 22-hour daily window from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET. That would end the weekend blackout for traditional wires. The expansion will not happen before 2028, giving the Fed and the banking industry time to prepare.10Federal Reserve. Press Release – Fedwire Expansion Until then, weekends and Federal Reserve holidays remain non-processing days for every traditional wire transfer.
