Domestic wire transfers do not go through on weekends. The Fedwire Funds Service, the Federal Reserve system that actually moves the money between banks, runs Monday through Friday and closes on federal holidays.1Federal Register. Federal Reserve Action To Expand Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours You can log into your bank on a Saturday and submit a wire request, and you may even receive a confirmation number, but the funds sit pending until Fedwire reopens. If you need money to move on a weekend, you need a different rail: FedNow, the Real-Time Payments network, or an internal bank transfer.
Why the Weekend Closure Happens
When your bank sends a domestic wire, it does not hand the money directly to the receiving bank. The instruction flows through Fedwire, and both banks must have access for the transfer to complete. Fedwire operates during scheduled business hours on weekdays only and goes dark from Friday evening through Sunday night.
The transfer is not legally complete until the receiving bank credits the beneficiary’s account, a step governed by Article 4A of the Uniform Commercial Code.2Legal Information Institute. UCC – Article 4A – Funds Transfer That final credit cannot happen until Fedwire is open and the banks exchange the underlying reserves. A weekend confirmation from your bank confirms only that the request was accepted for later processing, not that the money has moved.
When Your Weekend Wire Will Actually Process
A wire submitted on Saturday or Sunday enters the queue and begins processing Monday morning. If Monday is a federal holiday, it waits until Tuesday. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday, which extends the delay by an extra day.3Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Friday timing matters too. Every bank sets its own cut-off for outgoing wires, typically somewhere between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. eastern time. A wire submitted after that window on a Friday is treated as a next-business-day request and will not leave until Monday. Cut-offs vary by institution, so check your bank’s wire agreement rather than assuming a universal time.
These are the 2026 Federal Reserve holiday closures that will push a wire further out:3Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Holidays Observed – K.8
- January 1 — New Year’s Day
- January 19 — Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- February 16 — Washington’s Birthday
- May 25 — Memorial Day
- June 19 — Juneteenth National Independence Day
- July 4 — Independence Day (falls on Saturday; Reserve Banks remain open Friday, July 3)
- September 7 — Labor Day
- October 12 — Columbus Day

- November 26 — Thanksgiving Day
- December 25 — Christmas Day
International wires face additional weekend friction. A typical cross-border transfer passes through one or more intermediary banks, each with its own business hours, local holidays, and cut-off times. Some countries observe weekends on different days, so a wire sent on a Western Thursday can land as the recipient country’s weekend begins. Intermediary banks also run sanctions and anti-money-laundering checks before forwarding funds,4Department of the Treasury. OFAC FAQs – Topic 1601 and a review that begins just before a local weekend or holiday can compound the delay. Plan on three to five business days for time-sensitive international payments.
Weekend Alternatives That Actually Move Money
If you need funds to arrive before Monday, several systems run independently of Fedwire.
FedNow Service
The FedNow Service is a Federal Reserve instant payment system that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. FedNow Service – Frequently Asked Questions Payments settle in seconds with funds immediately available to the recipient. As of November 2025, the per-transaction limit is $10 million.6Federal Reserve Services. Customer Credit Transfer and Liquidity Management Transfer Network Limit Increases The catch is participation. As of early 2026, roughly 1,630 financial institutions are on FedNow,7Federal Reserve Services. FedNow Participants out of thousands of banks and credit unions nationwide. Your bank may not offer it, or may only support receiving.
Real-Time Payments (RTP) Network
Operated by The Clearing House, RTP also runs around the clock every day of the year. The per-transaction limit was raised to $10 million in 2025, up from $1 million.8The Clearing House. Breaking Barriers: RTP Network $10 Million Transaction Limit Spurs High-Value Payment Surge Individual banks decide how much of that cap to pass through to customers, so your sending limit may be lower. RTP reaches roughly 65 percent of U.S. demand deposit accounts.
Same-Bank Transfers
If you and the recipient both hold accounts at the same bank, an internal transfer (sometimes called a book transfer) often processes immediately on weekends because the bank is moving money between its own accounts rather than routing through Fedwire. Confirm with your bank whether any holds apply.
Peer-to-Peer Payment Apps
Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal move money on weekends and work well for smaller amounts, but their per-transaction and daily limits sit well below what a wire handles.
Canceling a Weekend Wire
The weekend gap between submission and Fedwire’s Monday open creates a narrow cancellation window. Under the Uniform Commercial Code, a cancellation request is effective as long as the bank receives it in time to act before accepting the payment order.9Legal Information Institute. UCC 4A-211 – Cancellation and Amendment of Payment Order A wire submitted Saturday generally can be stopped up until early Monday morning by contacting your bank.
There are limits. Your cancellation may need to pass the same security procedure your bank uses to authorize wires, and some banks begin executing queued wires as soon as Fedwire opens on Sunday night. Once the order is accepted and sent through Fedwire, the transfer is final. If a payment order is never accepted, it automatically cancels after the fifth business day.2Legal Information Institute. UCC – Article 4A – Funds Transfer
This window matters most if you suspect fraud. The FBI has noted that once wired funds are disbursed, they are “difficult to trace and recover,” with wire-related fraud complaints exceeding $262 million in losses in 2025 alone.10FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. Account Takeover Fraud via Impersonation of Financial Institution If something feels wrong about a wire you submitted on a weekend, call the bank before Monday.
Deadline Risks Worth Knowing
A weekend delay is more than an inconvenience when a legal deadline is attached to the payment.
Real estate contracts often include a “time is of the essence” clause that makes the closing date binding. If closing lands on a Monday and you assume a weekend wire will arrive, you can miss the deadline. Under strict timing clauses, failure to deliver funds on the closing date can be treated as a breach, letting the seller cancel, keep earnest money, or seek damages.
IRS deadlines are another trap. In a Section 1031 like-kind exchange, you have 45 days from the sale of the original property to identify replacement properties, and the exchange must close within 180 days. The IRS has stated that these time limits “cannot be extended for any circumstance or hardship” other than a presidentially declared disaster.11IRS. Like-Kind Exchanges Under IRC Section 1031 If day 45 or day 180 lands on a weekend and closing depends on a wire, the wire will not process until Monday, potentially past the deadline.
Do not expect the bank to make you whole if a weekend wire arrives late. When a bank accepts an instruction and then fails to execute it properly, it owes interest for the delay period, but you generally cannot recover additional losses (a lost deal, a contract penalty) unless a written agreement specifically allows consequential damages.12Legal Information Institute. UCC 4A-305 – Liability for Late or Improper Execution or Failure to Execute Payment Order And a routine weekend delay is not improper execution: the bank never promised to process outside Fedwire’s operating window.
What’s Changing About Weekend Wires
The Federal Reserve has announced plans to expand Fedwire’s hours to 22 hours a day, 6 days a week, running from Sunday evening through Friday evening and including weekday holidays. The expected implementation date is 2028 or 2029, depending on participant readiness.13Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours Once live, wires submitted Sunday evening would begin processing that night. Saturday would remain the one full day without Fedwire access. Until then, plan around the Monday-through-Friday schedule.
